It made great use of of thecwalking sim horror concept. Similar to Ito's paneling, it challenges the player to do something as simple as walking and taking on something at their own pace.

PT was just the concept of the game. Like a trailer, but playable. It explained a bit of the lore of the game, threw some hooks and gave a general idea of the tone the game would have. Silent Hills wasn't going to play like PT, it wouldn't be a first person game and wouldn't be a scary corridor walking sim.

Basically you've got middleweights, or heavyweights who can disguise themselves as middleweights, telling their lightweight friends about Ito because the trailer for the adaptation had the Hereditary guy doing the music. Frankly I don't think I would've been able to pique my friend's interest if the music in that trailer wasn't perfect.
