Persona is a spin-off of SMT which started on Nintendo platforms. I would have preferred Jack Frost, or the Spess Mehreen from Strange Journey (or hell, even Flynn) but I'm just happy that something SMT related is in Smash. Plus I do like the whole gentleman thief shtick.

No Persona has ever had Shin Megami Tensei in the title, they just added it in in the Western releases so people would know it's associated with Nocturne and stopped doing it when Persona had considerably outshone SMT in popularity. They did the same thing with DDS, Raidou, DeSu and other spinoffs, none of which had SMT in the title in their Japanese release.
