Chess has no physical activity besides mental fatigue and getting tired from that. No-one considers chess a sport even though it has respected organizations and leagues. People, enthusiasts have convinced the governments who own the legal power in a sovereign state and through their Ministry of sports to recognize video games as an e-sport. Not every country has recognized them.

The reason humans lose quite badly now is that processing power has advanced so much that computers can now calculate out 30+ moves easily, which allows them to avoid positional blunders and allows their vastly superior brute force abilities to reliably out-calculate human players in tactical combos.

Most chess engines really aren't particularly "good", it's the computers that are running the engines that give them so much power. That's why even when you look at games of a Grandmaster vs Stockfish (or just Stockfish vs another engine), the games really aren't that impressive or interesting.

Chess is a cool intellectual exercise, but not really a fun or immersive game compared to what's available in the modern era.
