Annoying game trends/tropes/mechanics

>Game has wallrun/wall jump mechanic
>But it doesn't work with every wall
>There is no visual indication of which walls don't work

Attached: 1558159366838.jpg (2109x3310, 1.44M)

Name the game.

>game has collectibles
>there isn't a checklist for them

Attached: 1379402278887.jpg (200x200, 13K)

>game has cc specialized class(es)
>most enemies are immune to one or both types of cc

Tony Hawk
JSRF

>game has secret areas with treasures you can access by blowing them up
>those secret areas are designed to blend in with the terrain
>BUT THEY DON'T AND THEY'RE A DIFFERENT FUCKING COLOR

Attached: rinku.jpg (1314x740, 568K)

that panel is so good

How the fuck are you supposed to figure out what to bomb if there's no meaningful difference? Bomb every wall? This ain't the 80s anymore, grandpa.

Ever played a vania? Subtle design.

>JSRF
As much as I love this game it has a bunch of annoying shit. If thread is still up I'll make and post a webm showing off everything that pisses me off.

>game series looks more and more like generic 2010s anime with every release

>Game has fake walls
>They're visually indistinguishable from any other wall
>This means you just spend the entire game attacking / walking into /pressing the use button against every wall in the game
Why do devs do this?

has anything other than dark souls done this?

Minoria just did it.
Castlevania does it.
Hyper Light Drifter sort of had it because some walls would be marked with visible stuff on the other side or ground detail giving them away but others would have nothing indicating they're there.

In the SNES and OG gameboy zelda games you could poke walls with your sword and if you heard a different sound... you could blow it up. I dunno if any zelda games still have that.I kind of grew out of Nintendo a long time ago.

I fucking hate that.

>in a sequence where you have to walk and listen to characters talking
>it’s not a cutscene so you can’t see it
>you notice a shiny
>try and pick it up
>you can’t
>you have to wait for the sequence to end
>when it ends you are taken in another place

>Unskippable tutorial
>Unskippable cutscenes
>Random encounter every 3 steps
>Side party members don't get EXP in battle
>Save point not heal HP/MP
>Dungeon dropped same weapon/armor you can found in the town
>Brainlet puzzles
>Sewer level
>Every boss immune to status ailments
>Luck stat is useless
>1% drop rate
>Secret boss is lost ancient
>Final boss is god
>No new game+
That's pretty much it

>Warframe had a decent parkour system.
>So many people sucked at it that they scrapped it entirely and now you can do a long flying "bullet jump".

Attached: 1567288860416.png (600x600, 45K)

>8 party members
>you can fight with only 4

SMT SJ has a lot

>Negligible stat bonuses and/or perks on gear

There's no reason to have something like "+1.4% chance to crit when near death" ever. It does nothing to change the moment to moment gameplay.

>boss attacks by charging at you
>it hits a wall
>instead of stopping or staggering, crawls along the wall at 2mph
>if you get touched, you go flying as if you were hit at 50mph

not naming names

Attached: 1560561993652.jpg (500x301, 21K)

why did they fucking change it it was perfect
why do so many devs do this
>game is perfect and balanced at launch
>adds characters / weapons
>removes mechanics / adds mechanics
>rebalance entire game
>nerf
>buff
>nerf
>nerf
>buff
>gamemode redesign
>microtransactions added
>5 years later
>game ruined

why?
>tf2
>overwatch
>warframe
>spiral knights
>planetside 2

>Coptering
>A decent parkour system

> Game has no post game content

the post game content is when you turn off the game and go outside

>Absolutely trounce a boss, take no hits
>cutscene has you two on near equal footing and the MC has taken visible hits

>game has an enemy or npc use a weapon that does a shitload of damage on you
>when you use it it sucks ass

>Game has no sequel
Autistic enough to start learning how to program

Dmc2?

>game doesn't let you pause or skip a cutscene

Just make all the vaultable walls chest high lol

>Kill boss
>Building falls apart for no reason

Attached: 1499292941703.jpg (481x366, 78K)

>really have to take a piss during a cutscene
>try different buttons to see if you can pause it
>it immediately skips the cutscene

>game requires you to have a minmax character to beat it
It's not that I don't like minmaxing sometimes, it's that I hate going into a new game and having to restart it, maybe twice, in order to get a character strong enough.

unforgivable

Attached: 1555403448085.png (128x128, 8K)

>mysterious girl you met is secretly a princess

Holding you fucking to this shit.

Bump.

>game has microtransactions/pre-order dlc
>game has long unksippable cutscenes
>open world not made by rockstar games

Those are my biggest ones
Games are just scams now

>decide to focus only on four because I didn't want to rotate
>game ''punishes'' you by having bad endings for the other companions for not doing their stuff and quests
ree

>Hitscan enemies
Usually not a problem, but when they have dead on accuracy and the game is all about movement, this shit is horrible

So poke every wall? Thats shit design just the same as bombing every wall just slightly less annoying but still annoying if you want to 100% the game

>game has a shitton of side quests
>most of them are "kill X" and "collect X"
>you can only accept a limited ammount at a time
>they can also expire and never come back

Attached: 1495927638418.png (318x328, 141K)

>grew out of nintendo

you mean you stopped playing videogames

Attached: 1513052080261.png (664x733, 138K)

>open game map
>endless checklist of repetitive subquests or collectibles
>go further into game
>useless collectibles just keep piling up more and more
Fuck you Ubisoft, for spawning this cancerous fucking trend

Attached: burn_it_all....gif (500x281, 166K)

>upgrading weapon or ability makes it stronger but also changes the way it works and makes it overall worse

>Anytime an upgrade isn't actually upgrading anything

>been saving up cool items/spells/whatever for boss

>press volume up button on keyboard
>skips cutscene

HLD had some really great subtle hints on most of them. Small graphical details, camera work and odd design/architecture. But yeah then there was just indistinguishable walls. But mostly the secret rooms were well implemented in it.

>have to follow an npc while they're talking
>your walk speed is slower than their normal speed
>but your run speed is faster

Attached: 1567819233995.jpg (720x526, 47K)

>Boss spends and inordinate amount of time either out of attack range or invulnerable
>Recipes cook on a timer
>Can't craft more than one version of the same item at a time
>Game introduces an unique mechanic for one thing and one thing only
>Shooting segments in games not meant for gunplay
>Platforming in games not meant for platforming
>Forced tutorials
>Forced tutorials that require you to adequately perform every action to proceed
>Boss fights that require you to wipe to proceed

Attached: 1566000751937.png (291x286, 142K)

The problem is that the handful of indistinguishable walls completely invalidates all of the details giving away the rest of them because as there are some indistinguishable ones it then means that you're forced to push against every wall in the game regardless.

Doom

the wiping one is a dumb complaint, you can't always win every fight. You want a cutscene every time you get your ass handed to you baby man?

Well if you want that 100% you gotta give your 100%. But I agree. I'm still missing like 2 gearbits and I'm not bothering to rummage the whole world again for them. But in general HLD did the exploring correctly.

>you enter a room filled with waist-high cover

>every quest is go to area x and push button
>there's never an interesting twist to it that makes it at all engaging

Attached: 1559976806422.png (308x353, 113K)

How about forcing the player to survive against an overwhelming force instead of just running face first into the bosses attacks to go forward

Attached: 1530998863170.gif (500x350, 1.09M)

In shooters having to zoom in and slow your movement speed to a crawl to fire accurately with ads/ots, with moving and shooting limited to inaccurate blindfire. It's basically lead to segmented gameplay where you no longer have to consider aiming and shooting at the same time outside of the occasional nostalgia throwback like nu doom.

>game has buff/debuff mechanic
>never works on bosses because they just cancel those effects immediately
Fuck you DQVIII.

every final fantasy game

If the cracks on the walls or the map based context clues couldn't cue you in, you might just be a little bit retarded.

>Being a pedobait goatfucker fanboy.
That says everything I need to know about your shit taste.

Name a game that makes you lose to a shitty boss to beat it.

Whoa dude all I did was post one goat image, who said anything even remotely sexual to imply pedophilia about a fictional character?

I think your wild projecting says everything anyone needs to know about your crazy bugshit implications.

Attached: 1498685269984.jpg (500x637, 75K)

>game has chance of instakill spells
>only trash mobs aren't immune to them and they die in 1-2 hits anyways

Attached: 1514536187550.jpg (150x150, 12K)

>random difficulty spikes because the game expects you to stop and grind before moving on

Attached: already_dead.png (572x662, 122K)

>forced tutorial that takes away aspects of control or gameplay for any reason even the most minor
I automatically abandon any game which does this, and it automatically looses a chunk of my respect if it's a forced tutorial that I can't speed through because of "you must do this before I open the way ahead" bullshit.

I'm working on a game with a story in it, I understand wanting to incorporate the tutorial in with the story and gameplay, but I at least am going to provide people with a way to move through only the story bits without giving a shit about the tutorial and having a way for people to skip it entirely when they want to just play and don't give a crap about my faggot story. No game has a justification for not providing those options, they're extremely easy to do and it's literally just the devs saying they're too lazy to give a shit.

Attached: 1438524547245.jpg (250x250, 5K)

I'll give you several
>FF9
>Tales of Symphonia
>Metal Gear Revengance
>Sekiro(arguable)

>people shit on the new one when it's ridiculously slow and retarded looking

>Random difficulty spikes that are still bullshit even if you grind beforehand
Fuck you Grandia 3

>Game's method of character progression is about unlocking new abilities and methods of fighting
>Game's method of increasing difficulty is giving enemies immunity/hard counters more and more of your abilities

Attached: skuwhy.png (199x201, 78K)

Fucking TRIBES ASCEND

>The mom is one of only two good characters in the whole deal and she fucks off at the 25% mark.

Game sucks.

>game's method of character progression is literally just bigger numbers

More games need to up difficulty not by just boosting stats but by also expanding enemy movesets

Fuck you.

Bigger numbers are BADASS

Beatrice kicks your fucking ass unless you level grind.

Attached: 65071366_p2.png (633x800, 94K)

Beatrice kicks your fucking ass regardless of what you do, you legit can't beat her in any confrontation with her

>the plot is about gathering the magic mcguffins that will save the world and fix everything

Attached: 657567.gif (200x147, 1.17M)

What encounter do you have to throw it's been forever since I played or seen final fantasy 9 in full.

Both fights you have with her

>It's introduced in the last dungeon of a Sci-fi space rpg
>You don't even get a cool boss fight for each one

That doesn't necessarily point to a bad game

>People that post dumb shit like this that don't contribute tot he thread.
You don't even deserve this reply

Attached: Screenshot_20190402-215535.png (1401x2048, 2.25M)

I don't see how she isn't sufficiently hard for a boss you are supposed to wipe on. Sorry you didn't get knocked out with 9999 damage instantly.

every inventory weight system. Especially if it puts non-strenght characters at disadvantage. I can already carry 50 baguettes; who are you trying to immerse?

This
Crackless walls were a mistake and good fucking ridance.

>play chrono cross as kid
>struggle
>eventually give up
Years later I replayed it and there was whole tutorial area that explained every mechanic and I just ignored or missed it as kid. Im sorry, my kid self is reason why tutorials are forced now.

no. About every of them has something that makes them stand out, slightly different color, smear of blood, ornament that isn't common for room etc.

Stop being a pedantic faggot user it doesn't make you look smart

We're way past this chapter now what are you doing

I just like posting King's greatest achievement because it makes me laugh

Attached: x20.jpg (600x848, 131K)

>Game has obvious traitor that's so painfully obvious you would have to be absolutely retarded to miss it.
>Your characters become absolutely retarded purely for plot extension reasons

It's lazy and shit. The only time I saw a good spin on that was Persona 5

Yes this is where I come to look smart let me put on a tripcode too.

Just don't force it, either frame it in story as practice, use screen popups that can be disabled at anytime or do what Monster Hunter does and drop the player in a training area and let thing figure things out on their own. Most of all give them the ability to go back and either read up on mechanics in game or practice them when they want

fin

>achievements that were based on online events
>you missed the event or restarted your save, so it can't be completed anymore

Could be worse look at Tales of Xillia 1
>Traitor fucks you over on numerous occasions to the point where he's flat out open about it
>Keep him around "to keep an eye on him"
>He's obviously around because he's the only one who can use heavy armor
At least he ends up with one of the best arcs in the sequel

King is a truly a force to be reckoned with.

>game is imbalanced at launch
>post-launch patch doesn't address the mechanic that makes it imbalanced and instead just nerfs the things everyone uses as a result of that mechanic
>this continues every single patch for years and years until they finally rerelease the game with a workaround to that mechanic (don't even remove it entirely)
>by this point they've nerfed literally everything except the most basic shit so now every build is the same boring shit
>everyone stops playing or just uses dumb meme builds to style on the newfags who bought the rerelease
>newfags start to think the game has no meta because nobody follows it anymore
>now they praise the game to high heaven for its "amazing" balance
guess the game

Thanks. I also enjoyed the latest part where King desperately seek out someone to train him and help him get strong, but everyone rejects him thinking he means he's on a spiritual quest.

Super mario world

I just recorded an hour worth of bullshit and OBS only saved 8 minutes. Sorry but I'm too tired to do it all over again, user. Here's all that I can remember though.
>That one room with the platforms and water in sewers
>That one room where you have to wallride a million times to reach the top in sewers
>The impossible to understand map in sewers
>The misdirecting arrow in any Flag battle
>Can't go back to main menu without restarting the game
>If you're grinding a rail fast enough past medium or higher graffiti you have to stop your momentum and return to the tag just to finish covering it
>This one's rare but having to crawl after enemies tackle you but you're too slow to gain speed and they latch on to you as soon as you stand
>Game is too easy

Attached: ass.png (1417x600, 294K)

Fucking Darksiders had it except even for fucking ledge grabbing.

That some people have the audcaity to call it a better Zelda is crazy.

Yeah, poor King.

Attached: x9.png (600x848, 742K)

>game has rudimentary level up mechanics that don't really change the playstyle between each other to a degree where is worth replaying the game for so they just lock off content for no reason and deliver a less tight experience

And then he runs into Garou. Top tier stuff

Yeah, but he just ran away to play fighting games with saitama. Although maybe he will finally start lifting.

>get the strongest weapon ny bearing the strongrst boss.
>there is nothing to use it on anymore

>fake loading screen
There is only one game that I know that do that and it just to let you see your loading screen unlocks.
You can skip it on PC with a trick but not console.
The PC skipped time is instantaneous expect in a few parts

Anonymous Agony did it

>game is a collectathon
>everytime you collect a thing, you exit the level
>you have to replay the same level from start multiple times to get everything

>at some point during the plot the bad guy just steals all your magic mcguffins and thanks you for gathering them for him

Wait, are we past 110 yet? Last I was reading Satama and Tornado at last had their fucking fight and that little bitch more or less KO'ed herself in the process.

We're 116 now. Lots of Flashy-Flash and Sonic-Speed-o-Sound.

I was talking about the Leisure Suit Larry Magna Cum Laude
The game has native borderless windowed support, you just alt-tab while loading and it loads instantly

Game can't go five seconds without trying to tell you where to go or which item/technique you should use or drag the camera away to point at something
Games that remove any control to force you down a specific path. There's a chest/item/shiny in the background? Too bad, watch the mini-cutscene
Every other encounter forces you away from just playing the game for some issue or another, refuses to hand over the reigns, and makes you go through obnoxious shit to teach you shit you figured out twenty minutes ago

I just want to play the fucking game already

>Literal on-rails segments where your inputs don't mean fucking shit beyond pressing forward
Binned off Red Dead Redemption 2 within a few hours because of this garbage.

>Unlock new ability to help transverse the game.
>Don't use ever again past said level/area not even in bonus level/area where all other techniques and abilities are used.
