This meme only started because everyone wanted a new game about Cloud and friends, and threw a hissyfit when it was some new characters in a new world
After all Final Fantasy 7 brought in tons and tons of newfags who did not know that every game in the series is in a new setting.
I distinctly remember talking to people both IRL and they could talk about nothing but MUH CLOUD MUH CLOUD MUH CLOUD THIS GAME SUCKS

Every other criticism came after the fact. The game was already massively hated when it came out, nobody gave it a second chance. The only other criticism was "junction is too difficult and hard to understand!"
Then Spoony's video comes out and people are suddenly given arguments they can actually use without looking like baby idiots
They all turned 180, and "Final Fantasy 8 is the worst game ever because junctions make no sense and the game is hard!" turned into "Final Fantasy 8 is the worst game ever because junctions make the game too easy!"

Gamers are a fucking joke who cannot think for themselves and just parrot what they are told.
And don't say "nu-uh that didnt happen" most of you werent even old enough to read when the game came out

I specifically remember playing the demo on a pizza hut demo disc along with Legend of Dragoon and I thought it was incredible. I still remember they had Rinoa in the mission to Dollet as a stand in. Between that and the Dragoon demo, I was blown away. I thought it was incredible and super fun.

I remember going to school the next few days and telling my friends how cool I though it was. They all said it was going to suck because it didn't have the 7 cast. I was particularly upset because I never got to play 7. They had all just talked about how great 7 was and at the time they were hyped for 8, but then they did a 180 on it. Felt bad man, still feels bad.

But I got it, and I loved every second of it. The last game I played was 2 and 3 at the time on snes. I did eventually go back and play 7 on ps3 and it was pretty damn good, but I didn't think it was any better than 8, just different.

It has and will always be one of my favorites. I also had a gf back then and we wen to a costume party Halloween that year and we made really shitty cosplays of squall and rinoa. she pulled it off better because rinoa's shit is basic. I had to borrow my dad's leather jacket and it still didn't look right.

Try not to let people's opinions bother you THAT much. Yea Forums has been hating on FF8 since the dawn of time but that doesn't stop it from being one of my favorites in the series.

Playing the remaster right as we speak. I'm loving it. Although now that I"m older, Junction is hella easy to break and make the game easy. I haven't died once and I"m halfway into disc 2.

It's a divisive game because it moves away from many JRPG norms.
But it does do some truly great things and I don't think there is any JRPG dungeon that has topped Ultimecia's Castle to this day.

Also when people don't know how to play, they play it in a dumb/boring way. Like how initially a lot of people spend time on grinding by drawing all spells they can from enemies to 100 and then never uses any spells.

I respect it far more than say FF9, which is overall a more popular game.

I played ff8 few years ago, this was years and years after I played FF4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.
And I found FF8 so damn boring, as bad as FF13 in characters and story telling

ff8 is extremely easy to break. you can break the game within 5 minutes of playing it
>start game
>pick up quezlcotl or whatever hes called from squalls terminal
>set him to learn card
>set shiva to learn ice/water refine
>grind AP on the beach until he learns card (takes 5 fights total) and shiva learns refine
>set quezlcotl to learn wind refine
>grind another 5 fights for wind refine
>go to fire cavern with quistis
>card all the bombs you see on the way to ifrit
>fuck up ifrit, get him as gf and as card, learn strength junction/+20% str from ifrit
>go back to garden
>triple triad the gatekeeper guy for a while until you get a bunch of thrustavaris and abyss worms
>use card mod on thrustavaris to get shear feather and abyss worms to get another item that i cant remember the name of
>use wind refine to get tornadoes from shear feather and aero from tho other item
>junction 100 tornado to strength. also can water refine all the fish fins you got from grinding beach into 100 waters for other stats along with the aero
>pick up the occult fan from the library
>fuck off to Dollet for first mission, do it and draw siren from the big boss monster
>set siren to learn life refine
>once siren knows life refine (grind on beach if necessary), sell occult fan to shops in town near garden and buy a fuckton of tents or cottages
>refine tents/cottages into curaga
>junction 100 curaga to HP
congratulations you now have disc 3 levels of health and attack damage and have broken the game.
for bonus points you can also win zells card from his mom while hes in the party, then item refine that (siren skill) for 3 armlets that give your GF +60% strength skill for even more over the top damage. i usually dont do that though bceause im autistic about having all the rare cards and you already kill everything until disc 3 in 1 hit

even without a guide it really isnt that hard to notice that queztcotl can turn cards into good shit

Not lying, a work colleague of mine likes FF8 a lot, and has played it several times and was excited for the remake, he didn't even know you could refine cards (not sure if he was unaware of refining items)

well its not like you even need to do that shit to beat the game.
triple triad card abuse is for BREAKING the game over your knee and making it your bitch
doing the above you can hit for somewhere around 5k before level 10 (if you card/use break to no-xp it)

if you REALLY want to go overboard you can get diablos learn his time refine then refine samantha soul (you get that from refining quistis card) for 180 triples, then shit those on literally any stat you want

You can get back every rare card near the end of the game if you do the CC sidequest
