If it wasn't for Yea Forums I'd have no clue who he is. Never played a Fatal Fury or King of Fighters game and he doesn't really interest me enough to try any of them out, but I don't hate his reveal. Basically Terry is another fighting game character with a projectile, however his fighting style is different in that he relies more on getting up close and dunking on the opponent. I actually think he's really fun to play as in his original games and I hope for that in Smash. As for gimmicks, you could see a sort of desperation gimmick where he might get stronger if he's at critical health though that's lucario's thing and i doubt that'd be in there

Terry has Ryu's tap or press actions. So for example his projectile, it can be small and fast, or medium speed but bigger.
Also, he doesn't have a Cloud meter, but a Arsene meter. Meaning, it fills slowly overtime regardless of what is happening, and taking or doing damage fills it faster.
Once full, you press neutral B and enter a Smash Bros version of MAX MODE.
Max Mode = Shulk's Speed Monado + tons of knockback removed + nearly no shield damage.
Now you might be thinking "that doesn't sound so bad", but the downsides basically do not exist. Let me paint you a mental picture. Imagine, Smash 4 Bayonetta losing the power to kill you, but, she can combo you TWICE as fast, move THREE TIMES as fast, and your options now are run forever, or get combo'ed a lot. Your situation now is a super fast character, he will run up to you. If you shield, he will grab you, and then do a 20 hit combo with zero knockback so you will always be too close to do anything at all, and then you will be around 120% when his meter runs out, so even just a jab will kill you. But the good news is, max mode runs out twice as fast as Arsene does. So, are you ready for a future where you constantly have to end up running away for a few seconds till "instant win terry" turns back into normal terry?

I love how Terry's Smash model gave him such big luscious pecs and that the fan artists also love it.

I’m not familiar enough with KoF to give you a good answer, but the fact that his anti air super uses a charge input seems to imply he’s more defensive.

But yeah, he’s not a Shoto. Shoots need, Fireball + Dragonpunch + Spinning Kick.

Terry doesn’t really have any of those. His Fireball is the closest to the archetype. And you could argue he had a DO, but it’s not only a kick, but it also doesn’t use the 623 input.

Instead he has an Overhead punch in Power Dunk, a quick rush punch and combo extender in Burning Knuckle, and Power Geyser, which used to be his Super, but then got demoted and replaced. He’s also got a bunch other stuff, but those are the most common moves.

Terry is a close range character who focuses on pressure but not mixups. He hasn't got Ryu level zoning but he can compete at it, he hasn't gone Ken mixups but he can do some stuff. He generally wants to be in and applying pressure.

While he can play defensive if he wants it isn't the strongest position for him. But he isn't going to be doing super crazy mixups either. Like a lot of protags in fighters he can do a bit of everything, but is also out done in most by another character. I see that actually making him quite good in smash as you don't have a traditional mix up game, and if he can keep on top and bully opponents that will be very useful.

Not him but I imagine he'd have a meter gimmick he can spend on a cancel or power geyser/buster wolf, or else he'll end up really similar to Ryu and Ken since Smash doesn't really follow traditional fighter rules.

As a Terry player let me write this down for you guys so you'll have a clear picture on how he plays and how he is different to other characters with projectiles.

For those who've played SF, one can definitely say that Ryu and Ken, although shotos both, are different in their gameplay and strats, with Ryu going for a more solid zoning strat while Ken is more a stylistic rushdown/character. Although both of them are shotos, they both play differently with Ken might've a bit more option to Ryu, but Ryu hits harder,

As for Terry's gameplan, Terry is neither a zoner nor is he a rushdown. Some might even say that he is a defensive character similar to Guile but that is actually wrong considering his mix of tools gives Terry a lot more nuance compared to Guile's straight forward plan.

This is what I've been thinking. Only issue is that dunk also makes a lot of sense for a smash attack. I also think he may get a charged version for round wave, or maybe even geyser if fully charged. That could also play into a meter gimmick though. I'd also like to see them incorporate Power Charge some how, cause it tends to be a big combo tool for him.

I think Fatal Fury Special, Real Bout Special/2 and Garou are considered the best. Garou gets the most jerked off in the west, but I think Japan likes Fatal Fury Special a lot at least going off all the Mikado arcade footage.

Garou also wouldn't be very representative of Fatal Fury since it has a completely different cast and Terry looks completely different. It's best played after you're already a fan.

What Terry is, in my opinion, is a straight up brawler, a character that has an answer for each and every situation handed to him. From having some of the best fast far reaching normals in KoF, to multi-purpose special and desperation moves combined with attacks, the hungry wolf does indeed have a good enough tools capable of catching people off-guard and keep them on the defensive, applying intense pressure specially if the opponent is unaware of Terry's frames and what normals can be cancelled into commands or special moves. Terry's true strength comes from the proper use of ALL of his normal moves And command normals(he has two of those and new Terry players keep forgetting that). Those normal and command normal gives him a lot of anti-air potentials considering how far-reaching and pokey they can get. Learning how to use all of it not only to defend yourself but also to go on the offense is important for a Terry player as it allows you to keep bringing the fight on your opponent and staying right in near or directly on their face.

In short as , Terry's gameplan is not mix up nor is it zoning but pressure. A good Terry can definitely crack an opponent like a nut if he is allowed to so. And if an opponent tries to attack, he still has to be very wary which of Terry's special or normals are unsafe considering some of it can be ambigous specially if the Terry player is applying crack-shoot, power charge and power wave into the mix. Failing to do so will end up getting frame trapped and yes, eating a combo that can gobble up half your life if the Terry has enough stock for it.

Saw and played a few Neo-Geo arcade cabinets years ago at my neighborhood store, downtown Detroit arcade called Roscoe's, the go-kart arcade on 8 mile and Mound (Detroit/Warren), The Butterfly Golf/Go-Kart/Arcade at Van Dyke and 14 mile and Warren.

The only snk series I’ve been familiar with is SamSho. I’ve seen Terry before and have heard of Fatal Fury and KoF but never got too into the games. eShop has Fatal Fury Special 2 and 3, KoF 97 - 2003. Which ones should I play so I can get a good feel for Terry’s play style and move set?

I don't think every new reveal, or every third party, needs to be the biggest bomb drop imaginable. I went to arcades when I was young many times and played mostly Darkstalkers and I'm loving his inclusion. Maybe it's because he sort of captures that arcade game feel.

I think that is partly why I love the reveal so much. Giving the community what they want is great, but eventually it kind of feels like just playing to a certain crowd rather than the best ideas for the game. So that whole thing becomes a game to itself rather than really talking about smash. Ridley's reveal was amazing, the character itself isn't all that great. While also likely not introducing anyone to metroid and no one even talks about him any more. But when Hero was announced it reminded me hey I should actually play one of those, so I picked up DQ3 and had a really great time. I think that was true for a lot of people and it is what smash use to do. A lot of people were introduced to a series through smash, but rather than be presented with something new and interesting a lot of people seem to just want their boy on screen.

Basically, people don't always know what they want. I remember Sakurai said he wanted to add characters who had a future, and I think that is because he knows of the smash boost. SNK are trying to rebuild their reputation, Persona is becoming a really serious name in JRPGs and SE is pushing DQ in the west again while generally putting a bit more money into it. But the pick everyone really wanted, was just for people who already know and played the games. No new ports or new games. Japan who knows Banjo the least need to emulate or hunt out a cart cause they aren't touching xbox. I'm not saying him being in is bad, I just hope Sakurai sticks to his guns.

Because of Sans, not because the character is good. Smash simply isn't a game where projectile-reliant characters have a chance. They're either garbage because they can't do anything good melee-wise and their projectiles can be shielded and absorbed and reflected or really frustrating to fight against because they can spam their projectiles everywhere and prevent even getting near them.

Special's gameplay is just the slightest bit different than 2's. It boils down to fairly subtle/minor differences. It's not uncommon for people to consider Special better than 2. Plus 2 only adds a couple new characters (though they're both pretty decent characters), so there's really not THAT much more content.

Another thing to consider, if you just want to play for Terry, is that he can't do Power Dunk as a special in 2. He only has it as part of the game's chain combo system. So it's not necessarily the best representation of his moveset compared to the other games that I listed.

Because the SNES was much more popular than the Neo Geo or arcades and so it's more likely people's first exposure to Terry was a SNES.

I don't understand why what is special about watching someone else react to something. You already have your own reactions to the event and many varying forums in which you can discuss it.

Nah, his issue will be range. His Power Wave is easy as fuck to avoid in his own games, and almost all of his other moves involves him flinging himself at his opponent at awkward angles.
As far as juggles, he'll likely still have the ability to leap into the "background" and right back out again (a series staple for Fatal Fury), perform a quick escape (that has the danger of putting him in a bad position), and a defensive attack that'll likely come out slow and only be good for a single hit while pushing the opponent out to whiffing range.

Probably when Cloud or Bayonetta got in. Always felt that Smash was a celebration of Nintendo's history. Sure Sonic was in, but I felt that was cause Nintendo and Sega worked together so many times in the past they finally decided to include him. Snake was Hideo Kojima asking a favor from back in Melee, so I didn't mind that. Cloud and Bayo just felt so out of left field for me.
