as another user pointed out, they likely had to record all their lines at once, by themselves and before the other voice actors did theirs, so Rex and Pyra's VAs start off really shakey but they get pretty solid near the end

Not overwhelmingly loved but not negative or ambivalent for most of the game. Honestly his English VA's performance was all over the place from really good to "What the fuck were they telling him to do in the recording booth?"-tier.

But the endgame where he gets his mind fucked and he has shit like the imagined Dromarch calling him out for not answering Nia's confession properly or Azurda basically accusing Rex of wasting his time and robbing him of his dignity by basically being forced to take care of him for so long really won me over. He's your stock standard resourceful dumbass MC you see in shonen manga and other JRPGs(though quite the handyman given that he has a job and is a professional salvager) but the game doesn't give him a free pass for it which really made me enjoy him a lot more.

Shame about the outfit though. Honestly if it covered up more skin and wasn't just random pieces of scuba gear over a body suit with short pants and bare arms, like maybe full body swim gear or something he'd be more appealing looking. His Master Driver outfit's pretty great though.

Not just in terms of an outfit but also stance and key art, it shows him as being more confident and aggressive than his original keyart. It was honestly cathartic
This is my personal issue honestly. It wouldn't be so bad if he could do at least a competent job during the emotional highs but instead where the story should be crescendoing in stakes and tension and feeling, it falls flat.
Incidentally, only on repeated playthroughs did I begin to appreciate more of his actual characterization and how it fits into the larger story. It also seems like he recorded all his side-story lines AFTER he finished recording all his main-story lines (aka, after he finally got into the groove of proper line delivery).
His post-battle banter and H2H delivery is pretty good

I had the same feeling but if you think about Rex's arc, it helps actually emphasize what a weak piece of shit he is early in the story. His outfit really makes it clear he's a scrawny brat even without other characters for scale.
He might look cooler or more mature if they covered up more but that would miss the point of why they reveal what's underneath the armor a little bit. Because before you get Vandam or Zeke for scale, Rex would be the tallest guy in his party and you might be forgiven for thinking he's bigger than he actually is

Imagine Master Driver Shulk, QTpi Melia, Bringer of Chaos Reyn, Flamebringer Sharla, and Pneuma Fiora.

I hope we get a post-game Challenge Mode where Shulk brings some of the Xenoblade 2 characters over to their world.

The latter two are silent protagonists who have everyone sucking their dick. Totally takes me out of the story.
The former talks, but is the most bland and safe character ever and also has literally everyone in the game constantly talking about how amazing he is and babying him when anything goes wrong with him.

Rex on the other hand has some problems, but he has a strong personality that's fun to watch when it clashes with his party members. It also never feels like the other party members or anyone else in the game is treating him like some idol.

I fucking hate silent protagonists. I just played through Astral Chain and the story was easily worse off because the main character was silent.

Hate his costume, but he is actually a surprisingly chill guy, and quite likable. I wasn't not expecting that when I played the game.

Pyra's connection with Rex is way more complex than that. She's like 'respects and adores him but also sadly sees him as a tool for her to reach death'. I'd almost say that early on in the game she treats him nicely simply out of guilt, but comes to truly love him over the course of the game.

He is cool in both dubs, is just that the English one can't scream for dear life (and it's mostly the fault of the director, not the VA)

Japanese is substantially more consistent but very generic, flat and lifeless. I personally think the dub is significantly more enjoyable, for both 1 and 2. And not just in an ironic LE FUNI REGIONAL ACCENT NOT SOUND LIK MY AMERICAN MOVIES LOL way either.

Well the issue isn't that it sounds silly but it sounds like the VA is trying to yell quietly.
It may just be an issue of audio mixing, but there doesn't seem to be too much emotion in it, his voice isn't straining at any part of the scream the way you expect when someone's really angry or desperate

I do see what you mean. Rex's "pyraaaa"s always seem like he's lamenting about something after the fact, rather than a visceral expression of emotion in the moment. However, I don't think it's a question of "he can't scream" and more "he wasn't told what he was screaming at".

I think he looks silly, but that isn't a slam directed solely at him or Xenoblade. It seems to be par for the course for JRPG hero designs nowadays.

His game is unironically one of my favorite games ever, maybe the first open world game that I actually felt was alive and had cool shit to do, albeit that was mostly because of all the relatively good side shit.
That being said shame that combat system was kind of clunky, though the dlc fixed that.

The only time the bong is bad (in my opinion) is an admittedly pretty big moment in the story where his voice just kind of cracks or something and it sounds pretty bad.
Other than that it's fine, I'm generally one to go for subs but if the dub is passable and it's actually a full dub I might use it.
I can stand mildly bad voice acting if it's not hurting the game much, but I can't stand partial dubs.

Malos alone makes the dub worth it.

The fake American accents completely take me out out the game, not to mention that the script is significantly worse than XC1's localization. Plus Ai Nonaka as Tora is too cute.

I feel like Rex would have been improved, had he been an adult like Shulk. The "coming of age" plot was kind of meh. On top of that, his relationship with Pyra probably would have developed better. The romance just didn't really pay off.
