Both are quite F2P friendly and offer a good selection of waifus.

Azure Lane plays like a horizontal shmup whilst Girls Frontline acts as a strategy game.
Start with the one whose gameplay appeals more. You may end up liking both.

I'll also go ahead and shill Sdorica, another good example of the genre.
Not as much of a waifu game as the previously named games mind you.
Its gameplay is a mix of puzzle and strategy JRPG with an entertaining story.

Well if you want some in-game lewds, there's Hentai Clicker and Taps of Eradine, but the former is extremely barebones, and the latter is ridiculously grindy unless pay, and even then it becomes sorta grindy, and you gotta keep the game active to progress.

I want long term progression but at a relatively low daily time investment while I play actual games for gameplay. The endgame can have sophisticated mechanics or whatever but the journey to that point has to be low maintenance.

In terms of sheer quality it's Honkai Impact and there is no contest but it gets boring fast, other than that it's the battle royale games (SMC and PUBG are the best IMO)
But if we leave technical aspects aside the best one is GBF, other great ones are Sdorica, Another Eden, The Alchemist Code, Langrisser and SMT

Most of the crane games are really shitty, and the figurines in some of them are super low quality. I like the idea of the gachapon machines because they are little toys I can put on my desk at home or at work, but buying full blown half-naked figurines is a bit too much for me.

Langrisser mobile? It's a revival of a dead series with no expectations, has some challenging gameplay, some pretty famous japanese voice actors, and is pretty easy to play without spending a dime. The best value for money are monthly subscriptions that give you ingame benefits, and the gatcha currency itself is so terribly priced and plentiful in the game that it's easy to never buy any of it. Plus the gatcha seemingly has a hidden pity system, along with banners that guarantee you one of the three characters on it that you don't own the first time you draw a SSR.

Up until recently it would have been hard to recommend, but they added in a way to sweep daily stages you have already completed, which literally saves hours. It's still a strategy game though, so it can be time consuming.

They've also done justice to Satoshi Urushihara's art, which is more than I can say for the actual Langrisser I & II remake due out in english soon.

no, if anything they made it worse. now you have to roll multiple copies of a demon in order to upgrade it, and a lot of those upgrades are downright overpowered (siegfried gets phys pierce, alice gets extra charges of die for me!, etc.) it's all been downhill ever since masakado dropped.

Its more fun to play for the super bosses, which is the whole reason I play it anyway.

I found it pretty friendly with lots of free 4 star tickets and the occasional free 5 star. Sadly, the game itself is really grind heavy and bare bones so it got dull after a month or 2.
