In purely F2P games, microtransactions are tolerable but I say that as someone who refuses to play F2P games specifically because of their microtransactions. There's been a trend of including them in full priced, $60 games however, which only exists to gouge more money from its playerbase.
In addition to this, there are different kinds of microtransactions, and 2K20 has the worst type; rather than it just being "nice gold fgt," spending money on microtransactions gives you a mechanical gameplay advantage over your opponent. You HAVE to spend money on microtransactions if you don't want to be at a disadvantage in this game (because your opponent is probably spending money). These types of microtransactions are extremely predatory, especially when you aren't even GUARANTEED a good player because of the lootbox shit; you will have to continually buy until you get something worthwhile, otherwise you completely wasted your money.

Your stats determine your RNG success rate for tasks; the higher your player's passing stat is, the more likely their pass will connect. Basically, imagine if Super Smash Bros. Brawl had levels on their characters that determined how often or rarely your character would trip.

The two biggest modes these sports games have is the ultimate team mode or career mode. In NBA 2K's case, it's the latter. Because you can take your player and use them in online modes that replicate playing IRL parks. They've added a bunch of events in recent years to get you to play year round. They also jacked up the grind so you really only have time for 1 player before the next game releases.

But should the servers go down or you have bad internet? Too bad, can't access any content besides local play and league mode. And their servers are absolutely god awful. Always lagging or downright shutdown whenever they have these events.

To make matters worse, they pretend they have balanced the game for esports. But all anyone does is create the same type of player (they recently changed it so the participants of these tourneys must pick pre-built characters) and play the same way no matter what. They limit how exactly you can build your player because they have no idea how to balance their multiplayer.
