So the recent Fire Emblem threads have really got me thinking about dub/sub. I usually play games in their original languages, but it seems like a lot of Yea Forumsirgins just play with dubs. Though I do have a few dubs I'm fond of because of either nostalgia (Tales of Symphonia) or just thinking it's better done than the sub (Xenoblade Chronicles 1). If I ever play a game multiple times I will switch to the other audio track at least once. So are you a dub guy, a sub guy, or something inbetween. Unless the dub is outrageously atrocious like Xenoblade 2's I usually take dub because I'm not a weeb and don't find "muh seiyuus" so much better it's worth reading subtitles.

If it's good I'll play dub but usually I'll do a new game with the jap audio. Some games I just can't do dub though like persona. Xenoblade 2 I couldn't stand, I gave it a fair chance got 25 hours in with the dub and decided to switch to jap and viewed the old scenes in jap. You could tell there was no direction and the audio didn't sync properly to the mouth flaps. All a shame because I liked the dub in the other xeno games (x didn't have dual audio I think)

I prefer whichever cast sounds better to me. Usually I play sub, but certain games like VLR I preferred playing with dubs.
Also, I grew fond of Bernadetta's high-pitched voice and the way she adds a lot of acting into it compared to what the text says.

I prefer dub honestly, due to the fact it’s easier for me to understand the characters personality through their voice tone better. Jap Seteth for example sounds too generic to me, and his character as a doting father and moral fag version of Professor snape is lost to me unless I hear him in English.

Dub fag, I go with the language I understand better first before switching. I usually wouldnt be able to tell if the VAs were bad in japanese unless its like high pitched screaming every few seconds. For the most part I'm ok with this dub aside from a few like Mercedes

I think things just lose their soul when they get translated. The proper way to localize a game would be like judge eyes, rewrite the script for the dub.

I don't think it's hard to tell a character's personality through voice in Japanese. Seteth is a character who is pretty guarded with his emotions but you can easily see when that changes like in his supports with Flayn, or when he's passionate about something serious.

Frankly, American dubs of Japanese anime/games are usually rushed to shit. Small localization studios like FUNimation will take on a dozen shows at once, inevitably resulting in quantity-over-quality. I doubt they do more than one or two takes for each line. Obviously this is different for native studios who are CREATING media, but when it comes to localization companies, they don't give a shit.

I don't even consider dubs unless the game is known for having a decent dub. I know enough about the language to pick up what's going on through sentence structure and context, and I can guess most of the vocabulary since it sounds so similar to my other language. Dubs were fine when I was in high school, but I have taste now.
