God Hand's problem in higher difficulty levels is that it becomes all about baiting a block and using a guard break, and because enemies block so soon and they break out of a guard so quickly you basically just do like a jab, duck cancel and a guard break until you've broken their guard and do the same thing with like every enemy.

This can apply not only to action games, but strategy and turn based RPG are less flashy and require more knowledge of the game on the viewer's part to properly appreciate what goes on with those, with the most extreme example being MOBAs: anyone that hasn't spent a few hundred hours playing them can look at a (supposedly) high-level play and only see a mess of particle effects, while more seasoned players will understand exactly what goes on in them

I really should save webms of my favorite games (or learn to make some even though I'm not that good since I don't see many people making webms for Devastation in 2019). Anyway my Top 5 is NG Black, Wonderful 101, DMC5, TF Devastation, & Aztez right now. Aztez gives you the groups of aggressive enemies like in NG with the combo options of a DMC, but makes your combo length and variety matter due to blood absorption and sacrifices as well as positioning on the stage since it's a 2D game.

That God Hand webm is literally the player going in, reacting to the enemy blocking him, and instead of just throwing out a guard break reacting to their counter-attack after blocking his kick with an attack that avoids theirs. Their combo is also three universal moves (two uppercuts and the kick) that do pretty good damage, so nothing about what you said is correct.

My issue is more with games like Bayonetta where you have a single i-frame dodge button that's the answer for EVERY ATTACK EVER. Potential enemy variety is hampered when you have a one-size-fits-all solution for their attacks already, and elements like crowd control and positioning are lessened when you can dodge cancel out of your attacks at any time with minimal commitment. The defense game is then dumbed down to pressing one button at the right time instead of threat prioritization/crowd control/spacing which typefied old 2D beat 'em ups. Those games aren't about reacting on the spot, they're more about creating a situation where you won't get interrupted by the enemy's high-speed attacks. God Hand was also good about this because it had multiple equally viable defense maneuvers on top of always putting you against multiple enemies to force you to CC properly.

I don't mind it in DMC since that game is all about styling on enemies so naturally enemies are more of a punching bag, and I haven't ever played NGB so I can't comment on that, but otherwise such a reliance on i-frames has a tendency to homogenize enemy/boss design.

It's on PS4 too (for Nippon). PC port should (hopefully) come at a later date

Yea Forums's obsession with God Hand is literally "it didn't get good reviews and didn't sell well, therefore I like it". It's a shit game Yea Forumsirgins. Have sex.

The thing about Bayo is that the enemies are aggressive in a way that encourages use of the dodge liberally (although you do get a recovery animation for too many in a short time) where the depth comes from using Offset to keep your strings intact throughout your dodging. You're basically trying to go with the flow of enemy patterns so you can pull out Wicked Weaves, add they are the crux of your score at the end. Bayo is definitely not my favorite in the genre for multiple reasons but I can resurrect the unique take even if I like DMC and NG more, as they sit in the extremes Bayo straddles.

Personally I prefer W101 & TF Devastation which remix the basis of Bayo into something new and innovative in their own ways.

My biggest problem with character action games is that you have to finish them a bunch of times before you're even allowed to touch the higher difficulty settings. It honestly feels patronizing.

That's not remotely the same thing and you know it. The score at the end doesn't change the challenge you face, whereas the difficulty setting does.

If you mash against a multihit attack you will block it and gain insane style (assuming you properly time the first press)

Sure it does, the score tells you how shit you were. And the difficulty is hard in the hardest difficulty, and forces you to use the most important mechanics it offers.
If you don't care about the score then that's fine, there's still a challenge to the game.

It's excellent design because it means players who find it easy have something to strive for on top of just beating the game.

There's a Royal Guard maneuver which rewards skillful play by giving you the longest Witch Time possible. Bayonetta is the perfect mix of NG and DMC.

The early puzzles are geared towards teaching you how combat and Witch Time work. Later puzzles aren't really puzzles at all. More like combat exhibitions and spinning a lever. Platforming is later mitigated by the panther form allowing you to speed through everything. Nothing to do about your disdain for large bosses and writing. Sorry you can't enjoy a top 3 action game, user.

Yes. It excels more as an action game than an RPG, the options each vocation has are varied and fun (except Mage which is just a support class for Pawns, and Warrior despite being one of the most fun is kind of gimped compared to the remaining 7). The climbing system adds a lot and the ranged classes have enough cool shit to justify not using it much. It takes like an hour to 90 minutes to get past the intro stuff and the oxcart escort to get to Gran Soren (unless you explore Cassardis first) but then you get a lot of stuff opened up. There's also a lot of interesting stuff going on in the world but it's all late/post-game so I'll leave it at that.

Again, the RPG elements are among the weaker aspects barring the dungeons being the peak of gameplay (especially Bitterblack) due to an odd damage calculation system and how few worthwhile quests there are (maybe 3 solid sidequest lines and a couple singular sidequests of relevance). It's still one of my favorite games though.

Why? The original is one of the best action games ever made when it comes to having great combat AND great game design. You can even get Sigma for PS3 and not miss out on much outside of costumes and ROMs unlike Sigma 2 that drastically changes the base game for the worse.

Mage really is the worst class for an Arisen (your player character) since it's mostly there for heals and imbuing weapons with elements. It's one of the starting three though, so pick it if you want to branch out into other magic vocations. Sorcerer casts the big ass offensive spells, Mystic Knight gets to do some multi-elemental Paladin shit while also having access to a Mage's staff instead of a sword or mace if he wants, and Magick Archers are just batshit insane for what they're able to do (besides all the wild arrow varieties, you can just light yourself on fire and jump onto giant monsters to stab them with your daggers while lighting them up).

I played sorcerer in my first DA playthrough and was a bit disappointed. Its a lot of holding down buttons until your spell activates. Not super engaging, even if the spells are neat.

I'd highly recommend Magick Archer. Its what I 100% the game with.

Keep in mind you can switch Vocations whenever you're at the Inn, and you should experiment with all of them; you'll get a more even stat growth for your early levels and you'll get to unlock each vocation's Augments, which you can equip no matter what you switch to. Warrior is lower-tier but the Augments that boost STR and increase your carrying capacity are useful.

I find all these action games really cool even though I only play MH. DMC webms are the only ones where the enemies are helpless and they just get whacked to death. In every "pro" stream of DMCV that happens too to every enemy except bosses so I can't say I like DMC combat that much, which in comparison in bayo the enemies always have something that can fuck you up and break your combo, forcing you to dodge. Just my pleb opinion though.

DMCfags are also the ones that get really defensive when people criticize their games in these threads but they bitch so much about how other games aren't as good as muh DMC.

I quit vindictus a while ago because of the end game grind of upgrading/enchanting your weapon with 0.5-1% chance and then breaking it and then repairing it for half of the month's work to repeat the process all over again.

Traditional 2D Beat 'em ups understood this, but used it for evil intent to rape you of your quarters, which is why you get shit like 0-frame startup command throws on wakeup from bosses starting from stage 1 in games like Final Fight and TMNT and Battletoads. Modern 2D Beat 'em ups APPEAR to do this less often, but the reality of it is that you usually just have more defensive options, like blocks and parries.

3D Beat 'em ups like God Hand understand this and add an element of fairness into the system, in that enemies are less aggressive if they aren't on screen, and less "fuck you gimmie that quarter bitch" moves with no telegraphing.

Also, enemies in God Hand will absolutely hit you out of combos. What you aren't realizing is a lot of advanced combos in God Hand will incorporate moves that "dodge" while they're attacking (they avoid hits in certain areas) or guard breakers, because enemies will often start guarding after 2-3 hits into a string.
