All this autistic screeching is essentially about which Operating System can run what game. They take very little real effort to port, these days, because they're already running on Close-To-Metal PCs anyway, just change some syscalls and add graphics settings.

I have no problem with consoles as a concept. There's a huge advantage to tailoring games specifically to hardware that is identical across all users. The problem is that vanilla PS4 and Xbone are underpowered, and the games suck ass. This gen has this paradox that the consoles are weaksauce, yet there are so few games that truly take advantage of their hardware. The ninth gen is around the corner yet I feel like the eight gen has barely started at all.

You don't have to take into account all the variability in part performance in PCs, and just target the hardware that will run your game, the results will reliably replicate. You can start doing things like using undocumented behavior to your advantage, because all consoles behave that way.

The weird thing is that it doesn't. I don't know if you've played the game, but the distant landscapes look great. When the fog is transparent, you can tell that there's a lot of detail being obscured by it.
That's why I think the fog is exclusively a stylistic choice. It's volumetric, too, so it probably hogs a lot of resources.
Pic related. The buildings in the distance are clearly detailed and don't need to be obscured, but there's still a heavy layer of fog closer than the buildings, in the valley below. The details of mountains are kept as well, and a lot of smaller shrubs still stay in view and don't pop in.
The only thing I noticed that looked really bad is the ground textures when viewed from high altitudes. They're laughably low res, but aren't concealed by fog a lot of the time.
Wrong, the OP's image is very misleading. AC: Unity is using pre-baked lighting for interiors, linear games like God of War and Uncharted 4 are using pre-baked lighting virtually everywhere. In general these "graphics showcase" games don't have day/night cycles or any sort of interaction with background elements because that allows them to bake in all the lighting and achieve a quality level that's simply impossible for dynamic lighting.

the lighting in this game is really damn good. in the digital foundry review they said the shadows are ray traced so i guess ray tracing isn't a meme after all.
The buildings on the left as well as every crevices of the mountains still showing, receiving light and casting shadows in believable areas.
Keep in mind that that image is 1080p upscaled to 4k because PS4 Pro be that way even when you're not playing at 4k.

It’s a really great looking game. I don’t really get why people are digging it besidesit being in Xbone. This, Horizon Zero Dawn, Division 2 and Horizon 4 are the best looking games this gen. Stratis does have a bad sattelite texture for distant terrain, but once again - it's all real terrain. Kilometers of walkable landmass, no cheating. It still has the biggest terrain in any videogame released so far aside from procedural processes.

Resolution is getting higher. Similar thing happened with jump from 1024x768|1280x1024 & 1280x720p|1920x1080p. More pixels on screen, but dev tools and operational knowledge didn't immediately translate to new CPU multithreading framework. Pretty textures don't mean shit if your game tries to run AI, input, and calls all on one poorly coded thread... so they remove features that bog down the shiny instead of dialing back graphical scope. Then you're left with an emptier world than promised (see Fable and Spore and NMS, etc.) and still no innovative gameplay to replace it since they crunched for nothing. This is the state of gaming now.

Sure, they might've overdone it a bit since the room does look a bit too bright, but all games make their environments brighter since having an almost pitch black room doesn't really work for gameplay.
