I'll start
Splatterhouse was a great series that needs one more shot. The remake from a few years ago was an unfortunate victim of publisher meddling. Jim Cummings should return to voice the mask.

You dumb savages
I was downright terrified of this game. How fucking awful it looked due to 3D infancy unironically made it more terrifying.
HL1 mod Afraid of Monsters was pretty good. I also like American McGee's Alice, but I don't think I'd describe that one as scary for a horror game, it's more sad/depressing.
DUDE, Nightmare Creatures is the fucking bomb. I love that game! It obviously has its flaws but I love the hidden items, the atmosphere, the guitar riff boss fights and all that stuff. I really wanted to like the sequel but damn did it feel uninspired in many areas. I also hated how they handwaved the final boss as justaclonelol and killed the two main characters offscreen like they were punks. Boy howdy I was assblasted.
The first American McGee's soundtrack was certainly something, though. All that sobbing and screaming that was added in was something else. I'll agree, though. It was a lot more moody and melancholy than scary. It had this really nice emotion to it that I feel the sequel completely missed.
it looked and looks great
fuck off
I know I played it but have 0 recollection of it outside of DUDE ROB ZOMBIE LMAO. NC1 was for sure more memorable.
No it didn't and no it doesn't you fucking manchild. Remove your rose-tinted glasses.
This game spooked me out when I was a kid but I loved the atmosphere.
Yeah I still vividly remember the docks and those giant blue ogres that would literally pop in like a foot away from you due to the hardware limitations. I needed frequent nope breaks playing this.
What irritated me was that the intro to NC2 made it seem really interesting. I liked the idea of jamming to some tunes while killing monsters, but then you start the game and... Silence. It was jarring as fuck. In some ways it made it spooky at first, but all the monsters are so samey it didn't matter after awhile. Then there was the "Hey, let's play Rob Zombie while our MC climbs a fucking chain! Isn't he cool?!"
I still listen to the OST sometimes when I'm not playing. I haven't played the sequel though, haven't heard many good things about it, but I'll probably try it for myself soon anyway. McGee kind of seems to be becoming aimless with what he wants to do with the series since his previews for 3 make it sound like it's just a remake of 1.
Play this game. Go in blind with no information and be amazed at what you see. You will probably need to look up the manual or a youtube video of the first level to understand how to play though as it's really poorly explained in game.
That's been in my backlog for years
>Do not mention Resident Evil, Silent Hill or any of the FPS Indie Horror Game Trends
Well Dead Space would be the third best survival horror game franchise right after those two legends and it only has two good games to its credit. The third being balls of course.
Dead Space hardly gets discussed so I give that a pass.
Madness Returns is uh... Interesting. It isn't a bad game by any means but it's just not a good game, either. I'd still say give it a go so you can form your own opinion on it, but don't expect anything like the last one. I unironically love a lot of the costumes, though. The steampunk and red queen outfits are great.
How do you Illbleed and NC lads feel about this one? And the series as a whole I guess.
I haven't played the PS1, but the SNES version is legitimately scary
I've been interested, but it seems like figuring out what's going to fuck you is a whole bunch of guesswork.
DBD is pretty shitty for the most part.
But running across a good Myers, Ghostface, Wraith, Hag or Spirit always guarantees at least one fucking scream of terror for me. These are the killers with zero terror radius or get rewarded for being sneaky as opposed to someone like Billy who runs around everywhere with a loud ass chainsaw.

You don't have much of a genre left to talk about then.
Koudelka may have had RPG combat added in despite being designed as a Resident Evil style game, but the horror atmosphere is one of the best I've ever seen. It's genuinely foreboding and has actually good voice acting, which is crucial to maintaining its seriously disturbing vibes. The zombie, ghost, and monster designs are excellent too, and the sound design for all of them really contributes to the overall atmosphere.
The sequel game, Shadow Hearts, is great at all of these things too, but it gets a bit more "normal" in regard to RPGs and has some moments of levity and even comedy, which Koudelka doesn't have at all. Shadow Hearts does have changes to the gameplay that are widely considered to be improvements, and the Judgement Ring system is leagues above normal RPGs, but there's something about Koudelka's "every weapon can break" system that adds to the tension.
I played a bit of the SNES one but lost my data on an emulator and never got back to it. Recall a diced body in the bathroom. PS1 version was my jam. Was unsettling to go from Resident Evil where you can defend yourself to not being able to
Absolutely not true, Zoomer
I bought Koudelka based on the cover alone and was shocked when I got a turn based rpg game. Story, from what I remember, was good but the gameplay was tedious. I also bought this based on the cover alone. Regret it but it's actually fairly rare these days so whatever.
I only played a fucked emulation of 1 and all of 3. It's a good series I think and I'm quite fond of the music.
Koudelka is best played on an emulating PSP. It drastically reduces the load times and disc-changing issues. When I saw that first battle transition I raised an eyebrow then raised the other because one eyebrow wasn't enough to respond to that oddity. The game does work out beyond that point though.
Succubus Prison: House of Lewd Demons
HOLD IT. Hear me out. Ok, yeah, I came (hue) for the porn. Then I went through the intro segment. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. This game is horrifying..
I mean, you'll still jack off, but you'll be spooked all the other times. This shit is messed up
Never heard of it. How does a game about big tittied succubi get spooky?
I'm eternally asshurt that the first game's never gotten a proper Western release.
And that we'll never get an Argento-directed film adaptation starring young Jennifer Connely.
by depicting the horrific process by which succubi consume men by fucking them to death (lots of crackly noises), and then stranding you in the house with 24 hours to escape while the succubi taunt you and all the ways you can fuck up and get killed. There's also stealth and time management elements as succubi will be at certain places at certain times
By 3 I take it you mean the PS2 one? I hate how fucked this series is with technically 2 part 1's. If so, how is that? I recall previews of it back in the day but it no longer felt like a Clock Tower game and just another generic 3rd person survival.
But we did get...! Honestly, I own a copy of it and just never felt inclined to even try it.
Friendly reminder that Keiichirō Toyama (creator of Silent Hill, Siren/Forbidden Siren and Gravity Rush) has been heavy implying on both social media and in press interviews that his next game will be a return to his horror roots.
What would you like to see from him?
Haunting Ground, even though it's basically about dog fucking
Basically it's a survival game in which you have to escape the house in which three succubi are roaming around constantly, and if they ever catch you in a place you're not supposed to be in (toilet or your room) they'll fuck you up.
What makes it even more tense that even though the game normally resets whenever you die with protag retaining all knowledge and memories of previous lives, there are actual dead ends too with your save-file being permanently fucked up, and you having to start all the way from beginning.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is a really solid game even without the sanity effects at full blast. It truly captures the themes and even the word choice of Lovecraft's works, and once you get the hang of it the controls are less tanky than you might expect. A great cue to notice enemies that are off-screen or to detect important items is to observe where your character is looking.
In terms of rampant player death, these descriptions are giving me the Witch's House vibes. Did you guys enjoy playing it?
IMO The best point and click ever made
>Well Dead Space would be the third best survival horror game franchise right after those two
That is too much for it
>You don't have much of a genre left to talk about then.
This is wrong. Horror's golden era happened and you can't deny that.
Siren, Fatal Frame, Fear, Kuon, Rule of Rose, Eternal Darkness, Dead Space, Evil within, etc
Damn dude there is a lot to talk about, where have you been?
I wish the other half and ending of the game was better.
This was such an enjoyable game though. might be just me though since I loved the alien franchise
Fatal Frame 6 when?
Man of Medan was a horrible game, just horrible animations and terrible plot.
There are no monsters. Its just a special nerve gas that makes you freak out like the scarecrow from Batman.
There was that Wii railshooter.
>tfw the scissorman is actually freakier jn the game than on the cover.
I think they should have had that guy on the cover, little pantaloons and all.
That's why I like Identit better. Its got a practice mode and the community isn't as toxic, no one speaks english!
Attempts... were made.
minecraft
Yea Forumsros what was that game from the Wii that everything was in black and white and when you killed an enemy there was blood splatted everywhere?
This game spooked me as a kid, and I've heard the remake is pretty good
Mad World?
damn, this game was so fucking fun.
Underrated / forgotten game
Hey, I actually liked Remothered.
I liked Man of Medan too, though it definitely had its problems. Also, the big tweest is so obvious that I spent the entire game hoping for a double tweest and was disappointed. Still liked it for what it was though. Working on the platinum now.
Holy shit this game! MC was named Max or something right? A friend and I played this years ago and were blown away by how fucking weird it was. Got to the last chapter, my save corrupted, and neither of us had the gumption to go through the entire thing again. I still think about it from time to time though. I got it from GoG so I'll probably go back to it for Halloween this year.
Sweet Home for the Famicom is really spooky.
Am I contrarian, or can this even be called a horror game? Made me feel bad for much longer than one, at least.
If existential horror counts, sure. I got about halfway through (spaceship and witch castle), will finish sooner or later.
Fred has the God damn strength of a chimp he can just rip off a nigga's head like that.
This gif has made my day.
It was straight up BPRD the game. It was grest.
I still can't decide if his dreams where metaphors or a strange sort of vision of thr future.
If you can fix the shit port it's still terrifying
I actually liked the remake of Splatterhouse.
The game also came with the originals so that was pretty cool.
Does fatal frame rely on jump scares the premise is interesting but I'm major autismo with anxiety problems and hate loud jump scares
I like Harvester.
A few times. Not at Dead Space levels though. It's a fun series, give it a go.
First post and you posted one of my favorites on PSone.
i fucking LOVED THIS GAME
and yes - my friend was terrified of it so he traded it away to me!
Anything like harvester kinda eh after the first playthrough
Thanks m8 they can really fuck me up
I don't see it get posted too often but I really enjoyed penubra, one of the best video game experiences I've ever had. The atmosphere seems unmatched by anything else I've ever played. Even the fan made mod sequel thing was fucking fantastic
>The remake from a few years ago was an unfortunate victim of publisher meddling.
user, let's be honest- it sucked, and it would've sucked with or without the publisher's influence.
>Jim Cummings should return to voice the mask.
Case in point- I like Jim as much as any the next 'Nineties kid, but the terror mask should not sound like Mr. Bumpy.
If you get too scared just take a pause. You'll make it, I believe in you.
Not sure how many people even know of this game but it’s got some genuine creepy moments for a kids game, I remember it used to give me nightmares as a kid
I've only played Clocktower 2. It starts off really creepy, but the hospital portion I could never get past and got bored of.
The first game looks interesting, though.
Is pic related good? Think I heard it was originally a spinoff of resident evil.
Dead Space
Finally an actual video game thread
Condemned is legit the scariest game I've played, you're missing it anons.
I've played the first Dead Space game only but it wasn't jumscare heavy at all, especially compared to Fatal Frame's random encounters.
