Actually, we've been doing better than ever now that more fighters are confirmed and we weren't condemned to a mii costume like Sansfags were. While we're on the topic, let me elaborate on why Steve will be in since OP was kind of lazy.
The second coming of the Stevebros draws near... today has been the only day I've felt true happiness ever since that cursed E3 morning. Today... my fire has returned.
Let's begin with Banjo: quite frankly, he looks like absolute ass. He has a limited use side-b that isn't even that good, his recovery is pretty mediocre, his frame data looks underwhelming, and nothing quite sticks out about him. I'm not one to make assumptions, but he looks like bottom tier garbage.
SECONDLY. THE BIG ONE. We have new fighters on the way. Now your fairy tale rules of, "OH! THEY CAN'T PUT TWO MICROSOFT CHARACTERS IN THE SAME PASS!" evaporate right before your very eyes. They're not going to be in the same pass dingus, they simply won't be. Steve is in. And you want to know why...?
THIRD. Sans' inclusion as a mii costume. Initially, you onions glugging imbeciles would point and laugh and say "HAW HAW HAW! STEVE ISN'T IN! SANS GOT IN BEFORE HIM!" and to that I would grab you by the scruff of your neck and fling you into the brick wall of facts and knowledge that is my mind. Steve wasn't shown... at all. Neither was Minecraft. Zero representation. And yet... this poll. What's that? Sans? Sans was ranked... below Steve? And he was doomed to a mere mii costume...
Sakurai definitely heard the cries for Steve. Minecraft's recent resurgence in popularity... Mojang would definitely want to keep the ball rolling. They don't want to let the hype die down again. A win win for both.

Banjo, Snake, and Mr. Game and Watch especially are all very expressive in their actions and animations which are used to convey their personalities (which Steve also lacks. You could say G&W lacks a personality himself, but his attacks are still full of it.). Steve's body is heavily restrictive, and Minecraft didn't put much thought into character animation given it's played purely in first person.
Story Mode's animations aren't much better.
