Falcon, Wyvern, or Bow Knight for Leonie; Gremory, Dancer, Holy Knight, or Savant for Marianne.

Leonie is a fucking god, any physical class is fine for her. I think bow knight is best personally, bows are her hidden talent, but paladin is great too. It's hard to fuck her up.

Marianne is a bit interesting. Bishop is actually better for pure healing but gremory gives her some offensive presence. Holy Knight is great for her but it can take some time to unlock due to the requirements it has. Dancer is also an option, though if you want her to primarily heal have someone else fill that role.

It's weird, as someone who has only played BL and GD I actually might feel the same way. I like some of BL's characters a lot more like Dimitri, Dedue, and Felix but overall I find its cast middling. GD is the same, it has consistency but only Claude and Marianne really appeal to me. With BE I have grown to quite like all of them. I was surprised how much I ended up liking them, they seemed like the weakest cast to me but all of them really grew on me. Shame I can never agree with Edelgard, though at least church exists.

Dorothea never gets past the first date with guys though.

Early and strong relic access + combat art, even earlier by telling Rhea to piss off. Axe affinity makes it easier to to dip into brigand (death blow), easier wyvern lord too by extension. If you can comfortably rock without lancefaire. Swift strikes at A rank lance combined with his crest later on. Relevant and easy use passive. His paralogue battalion is decent at worst, stride is useful.
He's probably the martial character with the most agency during the entire game. Bet lunatic will make crutching on ruined sky early on a thing, even if it's only five times

Anyone having interesting ideas for unit builds? I have a couple that worked really well in my last playthrough.

Pitcher plant Bernie: wrath + vantage + cursed ashiya sword, swordmaster class. Requires a retaliation buff from a gambit to work properly. Stride her and give her retaliation turn 1, plop her in the middle of all the enemies, and watch as she crits them all. Avoid enemies with gambits: I had Dorothea, hanneman, and Manuela pick off such enemies with their siege tomes when necessary. Also avoid monsters that have more than 1 remaining stock.

Dodge tank Ferdinand: personal skill (15 avoid at full up) + evasion ring (10) + wyvern Lord (10 avoid) + alert stance plus (30) + immortal corps (15) + preferred weapon skill (20 avoid at level 5) + all of your speed and luck stat boosters. Optional: sacrifice your dancer; have Ferdinand win the dance contest to get the sword avoid skill for 20 additional avoid and have him use swords. I did this, had him use a forged rapier for most of the game. Also works best with retaliation gambit buff. Near end game, I could reach up to 160 avoid when waiting. He would just fly into groups of enemies and take them all down on enemy phase, similar to Bernie.

Both builds ended up being pretty over powered in end game. Their only weaknesses were enemy gambits which are easy to avoid.

What's considered a proper build for him?
I usually like leaving people as their "canon" class which I'm guessing is paladin for him, but I know a lot of people don't like paladin/cavalier.

Were you planning on recruiting any of the church characters? Later maps may have you be able to deploy up to 12 units, the game does expect you to get at least a few characters. I know some people like the idea of fighting the students later for what it adds to the plot but poaching a student or two is expected and fine, having certain interactions is cool even.

I'm a sucker for the whole righteous king you can be proud to follow even if it leads you to death thing, so Dimitri was an easy choice. And now i'm having trouble wanting to play any other route because i like the Blue Lions too much.

Paladin, which is his canon class, is actually considered his best class. Wyvern lord is the best physical class overall but if you invest in flying with him it'll be too hard to have him also meet the requirements to be a paladin and not promoting for that long is pretty dumb.

With church it actually feels like the route where poaching everyone makes sense. All three territories go to shit and all lords are at their worst. BE students tell you they know Edelgard needs to die, Dimitri dies so BL students are without a leader, and Claide fucks off to Almyra leaving the GD students with no leader as well. With all the lords gone it seems natural everyone would turn to you.

Of course you can also enter maps with a smaller number of units then the map allows, the game will always let you bring less units then allowed, though it does expect you to have a full party by the end.

Ready my post. My wording was bad I admit but I say that wyvern lord is his absolute best, though paladin is more practical. It's hard for him to meet the requirements for both paladin and wyvern rider unless you use NG+ to but the skill levels. Having him become a paladin at level 20 is much more practical then waiting all the way until 30 to promote to wyvern lord.

Lorenz in BL and Ashe in GD/Church will serve the same role in the story regardless of whether they are recruited, so I also consider them safe recruits. Each house will also have at least one paralogue that requires a recruit from a different house to access as well as exclusive supports such as Dimitri/Marianne or Claude/Ingrid.

Because it wouldn’t be a fun game if you ran into TWSITD’s lair with swords and bows only to be met with infantry units armed with automatic rifles that can one-shot you from across the map.

Military technology doesnt really matter when people can sling meteors across a battlefield with a minor incantation and fire lazers with a hand gesture. The value of the nukes is that they have a lot of power all at once, and seeing as there were two salvos used in the course of 1000 years, they take a lot of time to build up.

She has a dozen spells that all do similar shit. Sagittae and cutting wind might as well be the same spell. Theres no reason to give her double charges unless you really, really need her to have three times as many spellcasts as there are enemies on the entire map.

Not exactly that bad but Dimitri has mediocre speed and dex, Annette has gotten 2 points of speed in 22 levels, Byleth is reluctant to get any strength, Hilda has 19 strength at level 21. Most of my level ups have been 2 or 3 stats except for Sylvain who I think might have stolen everybody's growths. Everybody refuses to crit as well except Doodoo who does it constantly even though he has a 2% chance.

Black Eagles. Despite its obvious either lack of development or just cut content for later release, I enjoy the dynamic of most of your house members being hostile to each other and slowly becoming united. Alongside the constant self-questioning of what you're doing is worth it in the end. It's also the only way you see anything about Edelgard beyond militant princess/emperor.
Blue Lions is extremely close behind and it's primarily because of Dimitri's fall from grace and then growth, it's one of the strongest story progressions in the game.
