I imagine it'd be fucking impossibly hard to play at that speed. Star Fox was tuned to be played at the 10fps with slowdown, running it that much faster would make reacting in time to obstacles and projectiles very difficult.

HD text is hell trying to read on a CTR. It comes out blurry and fuzzy. More and more PS3 games were using small fonts for long paragraphs and subtitles. So I fell for the HD meme, only for the industry to dial it back due to the people with trouble seeing.

Bad. The best ones are expensive studio monitors. Everything else is a crapshoot. Walk around when people put their trash out or check thrift stores. I've had the best luck finding them on the street on trash day.

Back in the day you didn't have RTX2080s worth of power. There are many concessions made to visual fidelity just to get resolutions up there that high, several graphical loads scale exponentially with resolution, at 640x480 you could redirect those savings elsewhere to make things look more believable.

I think if we never fell for the HD meme we'd probably have nearly photo-realistic graphics by now that were indistinguishable from a live action movie playing right next to them with full on full raster Ray Tracing.

The problem is LCDs, we all fell for the LCD clarity = better meme but all that did was open our eyes to how jaggy all our polygons were, and how big all our pixels are, ect. Most people never noticed the jaggies or pixel density because CRT took care of that naturally until they got LCDs, then they're all like "what's with all these pixel steps on everything? Man we really need to invest in AA and higher resolutions now" and that lead us to where we are today.

Just got a Dell 783s (I think?) It's pretty great. I have 0ms Response Time, literally the best feeling I've ever had on a game. I have it at 1280x1024@85Hz@0ms with my Acer LED at 1920x1080p@144Hz@1ms. The CRT feels better to play on, so fucking good. I can get the resolution up to 1920x1440p@75Hz@0ms, which looks great for 3D games (Just not on the desktop).

I like CRTs and I prefer the original hardware, don't get me wrong, but the CRT shaders in RetroArch get you 95% of the way there without the hassle of owning a 200 lb. television. Plus, the RetroArch community is super friendly and folks are always willing to help you tweak those shaders to your liking.

It is because the type of blur CRT provides looks good because it implies more detail than is really there and your brain fills in the gaps. see the image in , look at that cloth you get the impression of a gradient of colors in the skin and cloth, the skeletons shield appears to catch the light, it's all very impressive on a CRT. on an LCD it just looks like big ugly pixels. Surplus warehouses used to be the goldmine, that's where hospitals, schools and other government facilities would send their obsolete stuff and they used to have entire walls of old CRTs including PVMs and BVMs that they'd sell you for $5 a pop. Hospitals were big on PVMs so if you find where your local hospital offloads all it's surplus stuff to they'll usually have PVMs.

Personally I like retro gaming on HDTVs because I can actually appreciate the individual sprites more. I don't like how muddy and blurred together everything looks on a CRT and the lines going through the sprites are pretty distracting imo

if he didn't know about input lag but realized it felt nicer, thats not surprising. modern consoles use wireless controllers which are the absolute worst for input lag. playing on something with next to none would be a pretty big difference. wired controllers on modern displays are pretty quick though, most people don't need any less input lag to enjoy mario so i don't often recommend spending the extra money unless its needed.

No. PC CRTs are completely different from TVs in that they bottom out at VGA (31KHz) while TV signals are 15KHz. That and PC monitors run in progressive scan while TVs use interlaced scan. If you want to play emulators and PC games or watch old video it's fine (and imo preferred) but you won't be playing old consoles on them.

do you own a single wireless controller for any platform? that has 4x the input lag that a wired controller on a modern display has, and its even less for the ones with specific game mode settings. its such a low time that its not noticable unless you are nearly counting frames which is a thing in speed running and very articulate movements/timings for fighting games. unless you're doing something special like that, its so low time that it doesn't make a difference. i have a hard time believing that people fall for this meme yet 90% of modern controllers, even those on pc, are wireless.

I only have 15kHz CRTs, so they are only good for retro consoles. Sometimes I wish I could play some 480p, 720p or even 1080i games on CRTs but literally can't find good high resolution CRTs for that.

wired only for me too. my point is the average person playing with a wireless controller (which is all xbox/snoys now, dunno about nintendo) and that is several times the input lag compared to a wired controller on a modern display when emulating old games. whenever i see the input lag argument, its someone latching on to the 0 number crts offer without realizing that even modern displays are so low that it makes nearly no difference except in special cases like fighting games where you're nearly counting frames and in that case of course the closest to the original is the best. it makes no difference to the average person playing old roms though, and filters fill in the rest. telling people to invest in old crts and original hardware because muh input lag is nonsense.

Ebay is probably the worst place to buy a CRT or most of anything really. What sucks is that for some reason the area I live in CRTs are almost non existent. thats the point of this new overclock feature and why its different than normal overclocking. it doesn't touch the rest of the game so it only pushes framerate to normal speed to mitigate any lag. starfox is a bad example since the game normally runs at 10fps anyways and people are getting hung up on if the game is harder to play that way or not rather than realizing this fixes a shit ton of lag instances in normal games like megaman.
