ReShade already has a shitty VHS effect, and you can assrape the image quality with chromatic aberration as wel.

I guess this will have to do for now. I'll try to set up REmake with it tomorrow, see how it looks. But a game with this kind of aestethic done properly from scratch, just imagine...

I commend what they tried to do in Outlast, but so much of the playtime seems to require nightvision, and even normal view everything is just super crisp with a very small hint of vhs.

Faked VHS filters have always and will always look so terrible and inferior compared to actual VHS artifacts.

You can. You can create layers for the shaders. As long as other shaders come before the VHS one, you can alter the image in any way you want.

Just want to say that a good majority of people who actually watched movies via cassette tapes don't miss that era. Trying to watch a movie and the tape fucking up for the whole run, causing scanlines to fade in and out in the middle of the screen with the shitty noise that comes with it is the worst thing that could ever happen, and takes you out of the experience. I could never understand why people actually enjoy the fake vhs filters other than nostalgia for something they may or may not have actually experienced. Excuse my shitty rant but I just needed to say it. I'm going to the club for 80's night but I hope you guys enjoy yourselves.

Artistically speaking?
VHS looks more unsettling because is leaves more room for error since its electronic format is also more susceptible to electronic interference, meaning anything can fuck with it given enough energy.
Also, VHSs can vary in styles greatly since what is needed to process the tape can be affected by its placement, age and the chemicals used to process the film store on its format.
Combine it together, you can get some very interesting results compared to a modern digital camera.
It also leaves more room to the imagination as well since things look more blurry.

Manhunt is the only game that convincingly pulls off the analog TV look, but it was easier to pull off on actual CRT TVs because you don't need that filter.

Yeah, no. I used VHS tapes for old 007 movies and Disney cartoons. My family jumped onto laser disc and dvd products real fast.
The VHS Filter reminds me of that found or cursed footage horror movies that have been trending for the last decade.
And a lot of indie horror like to use video distortion like Slenderman.
