I think it was more the time. The 90's were kind of new to special effects and CGI. DKC was touted as one of the biggest breakthroughs for 3D gaming, and to see Donkey Kong and Diddy from far away most of the game, and then suddenly appearing out of the darkness with some creepy music was kind of upsetting.

My favorite way to play (which I'm doing now) is basically the no-leveling run. My take is more of a minimal leveling instead of none at all, because complete no level means using annoying ways to get around forced encounters you can't run from

It makes the game pretty easy though since you're basically keeping enemies from leveling up while continuing to grow your own stats with junctioning, but it's fun because it demonstrates true mastery of the junction system

8 might have the worst gameplay of the series desu, the draw mechanic has been bitched about to death but it really does just kill alot of fun for the game and makes the game a shockingly unbalanced mess een if you arent intentionally trying to break it, which is really the only fun part of the game.

The real issue is that all the fights just boil down to you spamming the same shit and summons, there never feels like theres any real sense of strategy or challenge, FF has never been that deep gameplay wise or anything but this just feels so much worse than those.

As for the story, I personally think it goes to total shit after disc 1, but some like it so i dont know maybe it will work for you. Frankly I think the game kind of loses a really cool tone and setting in favor of just flinging whatever dumb shit at you and theres just constant tonal whiplash over the place cause of it. If the characters were better id probably been more into it but as it stand Squall is the only one i kind of liked, and hes brought down by how dogshit his romance is.

There's hardly anything resembling a war in FFVIII. Galbadia is the only active superpower in the world outside of Esthar, which is hidden and uninterested in external affairs. Galbadia occupies most of the world effortlessly and without much resistance, and the only real battle is Galbadia Garden vs Balamb Garden, which ends in Edea's defeat, loosening Ultimecia's grip on the G-Army. Her final command to Seifer and the G-Army is to have the Lunatic Pandora raised from the ocean, which then later used to attack Esthar with the Lunar Cry.

Laguna is unironically the biggest douche in the entire series. He makes Jecht look like father of the year. Laguna staying in Esthar is LITERALLY the cause of Ultimecia's existence as she appears in the game. The creation of SeeD and Garden hinges on Squall being at the orphanage. No SeeD to hunt Ultimecia, no Ultimecia to seek answers in the past. If Ellone had succeeded in having Squall change the past, there would be no game.

he used to have a brilliant artistic vision at one point. he should have stuck with being an art director instead imo. had a much better track record when he wasn't writing the whole time but I guess that happens when your CEO forces you to pander to the Disney market after secretly creating a mutiny beforehand.
