Boomers in denial will say that's not retro
Inb4 Boomer in denial

It'll never be retro

Dreamcast launched 9/9/99 in NA.

and we're still porting games from it to this very day
inflation is real kids

It's retro if it's older than you user

Never been to /vr/ nor ever cared about the whole retro/not retro bullshit but why are you/them so against the ps2 being officially considered retro?
The only reasonable explanation I can think of is that you/them don't want ps2 threads to take up space in /vr/'s catalog

I don't know about the reasoning behind /vr/ rules, but I just don't feel like it's retro.

>tfw its been 20 years since 20 years ago

PS2 will never be retro, it is very clearly more of a modern era gaming console.

The last good console. Had all the major limitations of older consoles overcome, but was still limited enough to stop devs being the shits they are now.

In order to keep Zoomers like you out.

Only "zoomers" use that term faggot.

what a fucking great console

It will when the next gaming paradigm shift happens. 5th gen and below will become vintage. 6th gen and up (to last gen before the shift) will become retro. Then the current /vr/ will be moved into a new board named /vv/. All 6th gen and xth gen will be moved to /vr/.

Anons, what was your favorite game series on the PS2?

I was always a fan of Jak & Daxter

Metal Gear
Onimusha
Red Faction
GTA
Maximo
The SMT games although they were different series

These.

>psp can play ps1 roms
>ps vita cannot play ps2 roms
Yeah yeah i know back then vita was the best performing handheld. Its still disappointing.

to be fair, the technological leap between the ps1 and ps2 was massive

Not forgetting that we still had devs from the 8- and 16-bit days around meaning they actually knew how to program, increasing the improvement even more.

and I just got my first PS2 today.

>Onimusha
Damn I miss this.

>tfw we can't go back

I remember being blown away by MGS2 at my neighbours house. It was such a fucking leap forward from everything that came before it. Turned out to be an honest to god masterpiece aswell. Who'd have thunk it.

>mfw i'm becoming one of those nostalgic old men

Games really haven't advanced much beyond the ps2 era, the graphics are nicer, but the gameplay is about the same, i'm talking about games like Battlefront, 3D GTA, DMC, Dynasty Warriors, 2D Street Fighter type games, 3D Tekken type games, EDF, and Wrestling are pretty much the same now, it's not such a radical departure that you'd need to classify it as retro(outdated).

Because by that logic you'd then have to let in 7th gen aka the gen that killed vidya. So no, 6th gen will never be retro.

>Who'd have thunk it
Me, it's the only reason I bought a PS2. The only non-MGS games I ended up getting were Tony Hawk 3 and 4.

My point was that I didn't understand how good it was at the time, but I was amazed by it. I mean, there were a lot of games I liked as a kid, but they weren't all epoch-defining masterpieces.

its not really nostalgia if it's genuinely better than most shit we have today (mgsv for example)

Also, pic related, another PS2 masterpiece

Also didn't have retardedly long development cycles.
'member hearing about a game and having at most a year before it launches?

>there's people who don't think the dub is pure SOUL

Nigger, /vr/ doesn't even consider the GBA retro.

Retro nowadays refers to 2d era games, maybe maybe early 3d.

How hard is it to actually get those ps2 roms on the psn for ps4? Is it almost impossible since sony doesnt own the rights to any of them?

>bruh i played this on my ipad lmao xDDD

I used to play Mercenaries on Playstation 2 man, this thread is giving me nostalgia. Listening to its OST right now

Oh nooooo, Oh noooo
Oh nooooooooooo

Pandemic studios RIP

Can you please stop reminding me how long ago this or that was? It makes me feel sad.

SSX was the shit.

>20 years ago was 20 years ago.

And I wouldn't mind a version that had an HD port or outlet on it. It doesn't even have to upscale, just play the games smoothly on it and play on HDTVs. It's 20 year old technology, you can't fucking tell me that it's too hard to pull off.

I understand the PS2 had an amazing library, but PS1 will always be my favorite. Games were cheaper to produce, devs weren't afraid to experiment, shitload of good games and no other console comes even CLOSE to PS1 when it comes to number of good JRGs.
I helps that I had time to play them all back then.

I'm always between the two. As so¥ as it sounds I think the PS1 has more games that "affected" me.

it's already retro

For me, it’s 39001 and 50001

It's fucking pathetic, but I always found swapping the discs as you progress in a JRPG the best fucking feeling.

>finally got around to playing Pac-Man World and World 2
>PS2 craps out on me

Oh man, I'll always remember in Star Ocean 2 you had to change disks after a pretty important fight and cutscene. The point they've chosen to swap disks was damn perfect, and I think the disk changing picture was pretty fitting as well.
