What are the best games in the genre? I've spent hundreds of hours with Warcraft3 and Tzar; also played some Starcraft, but other than these three I barely touched other games in the genre
Help me out bros

Red Alert 2

The king has yet to be dethroned.

>hundreds of hours with Warcraft3
You are beyond saving OP

Attached: 1485879466778.jpg (652x640, 70K)

Why do you say that?
I had lots of fun trying out weird and obscure custom maps with my friends

Heroes of Annihilated Empires is essentially W3 (the story is very similar and also ends in a similar way) but has more character leveling depth (you can acttually choose if you want to focus more on base building or RPGing during the missions).

Unfortunately the game is very slow and easy when you understand how the AI and units work.

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
very active community. you cant tell me you know about RTS when you haven't played FAF

Well, Warcraft 2 is fucking amazing and one of the most underrated games ever made.

hahahahahaha no,
please tell me whats "amazing" and "underrated" about this video. i am waiting.

>mfw i have 400 hours in ra3

Still feel its an underrated game but jesus christ

may I suggest Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds...
it even has a DataBank where you can read up on a fuckton of lore from before the Disney buyout

I want something with fantasy setting like Warcraft 3. What you guys recommend me?

if you can only play retro games (or only like those)

try Z

What isn't? The soulful artstyle? The kino music? The chad 3 resources vs the virgin 2 resources? The roots of many of the custom maps that newfags only know from WC3?

Battle realms is way too underrated and is pure kino

It's a fucking snore
You click on the map and you wait for your fucking inert units to wake up and go there
Whomever has the biggest army wins
Reconnaissance, army composition, and flanking manoeuvres barely matter
Each unit tier utterly obsoletes the previous ones so it's either a rush or a race to T3/Experimental meme shit without too much thought put into what your army looks like
Retreat is barely an option because of the inertia of the units, which make any kind of ambitious action painful to execute

I get it, you like the small squares on the map, but it's all it has for it

I used to spend every Saturday night playing wc3 with the friends from 21hrs to 1am. We did some 3v3, 2v2v2, FFA, Uther Party, tower defence, blood tournament, Hero Siege, even some meme RP maps. It was fucking great.
I recommend Battle for Middle Earth as a fun RTS. It kinda butchers the Lore, but eh. RA3 is also cool.

What happened to that war3 remake, have they given up? Havent heard anything about it in a while.

you sound like you developed some actual thoughts, unfortunately they are all massively retarded.

It's a big letdown and they realised that they made some very poor choice.
>models seem like they've been outsourced by Chinese animators, completely different aesthetic than the original ; compare and contrast and shockingly faithful adaption of SC1
>Christie Golden will """rewrite""" some of the campaign to put "secondary characters" like Jaina and Sylvanas (which wowbabies know more than Arthas, Uther or even Thrall) in the spotlight
>new VA because ???

We've already established time and again that AoE2 is the peak of the genre.

Red Alert 2. Or Command and Conquer Generals

AoE2, RA2, AoM

>>new VA because ???
if you're talking about Arthas, it's because he burned all his bridges at Blizzard because they wouldn't pay him enough for Arthas' parts in Wrath

>new VA
Nigger what
This can't be real
I refuse to believe this

How otherworldly and utterly RETARDED do you have to get to replace something so important to the gameplay? How degenerated is nuzzard that they thought replacing something so iconic is would be an acceptable act, let alone a good idea? What kind of FUCKING DEGENERATE would want to ruin the game so much?

I am baffled; my hope and optimism is gone, and my day is ruined

Not an argument
I can get disliking maco+micro heavy games such as RA3 or SC1 but SupCom isn't nervous enough for me to be enjoyable. The flow of information, the responsiveness of units, taking advantage of terrain, reconnaissance, and army composition, all of the key elements of an RTS are poorly executed.

100 hours on the original, 80 on the Xpack, still didn't finish the commander's challenges.

Only has the kino music and artstyle going for it. Mirror races are boring, 9 units cap was awful and most of the missions were just ballista/catapult/griffon spam anyways.

I think you'll get the choice between original and new VA, it is however retarded that they put a new VA in the first place.

>no attack move
ruins the entire thing really

That.. Lord of the Rings monstrosity. I heard 1 is better

I just want Crypt lord and Tauren Chieftain to be actual viable first heroes
Is that too much to ask?

>RTS thread
It's gonna devolve into unit quote spam

>>Christie Golden will """rewrite""" some of the campaign to put "secondary characters" like Jaina and Sylvanas (which wowbabies know more than Arthas, Uther or even Thrall) in the spotlight
Really,that's pretty shit.

hm? you can always just right-click

Warlords Battlecry is basically the king of RPG/RTS hybrids, play either the second or third one depending on how you like your campaigns (Risk blobbing/freeform adventure with carry overs respectively)

My biggest problem with that one was only having one race in the campaign, really enjoyed the massive scale though

Starcraft 2 is the only alive online multiplayer RTS game.

empire at war

Starcraft 1/2 is the best RTS of all time. You can try out Age of Mythology and Dungeon Keeper 2.
Off topic: Heroes 3 is the best strategy game of all time, only it's turn based.
Sad! Feminist writers fixing toxic masculinity while spoon feeding you "diversity". Many such cases!

THIS

Ignore everything in this thread, except for this.

Unironically SC2, it's free to play and you get the terran campaign with it. It gets a lot of shit for the plot and retcons but mechanically, it's top tier, genuinely challenging on the hardest difficulty too

>MY LIFE FOR HIRE

Attached: Protoss_Zealot_Fixed.jpg (349x328, 29K)

is there somewhere i can download it that isn't battlenet?

He is right. But do know that you will get your ass handed to you in multiplayer for a long time. Try doing all campaign missions on brutal before doing the multiplayer.
You can pirate it, but there is no need. It's free.

I just want to play the remaster without fucking microstutters

well i don't want to download battlenet so i guess i'll look into pirating it

>disney retconned from nova to khyber

AoEIII's progression was ahead of its time
I hope AoEIV doesn't use that abysmal monetiziation of CoHII and DoWIII though, but you just know Relic of today is not the relic of 10 years ago

Sure. I played all campaigns on pirate years ago. Then I bought campaigns, just so I could get all the achievements in game.
I know, I'm a degenerate.

If you're pirating it there is a trilogy release floating about with all the campaigns, can't comment on the other two though

>terran campaign is mechanically top tier
>blatantly teaches bad habits like an overreliance on units that dont die
the coop missions are great though
10ish unique coop commanders with unique but simple build rosters that focus on a style of play are excellent for learning
>hotkeys
>build orders
as well as
>exploring build orders and team comps/adapting to the AI's army comp
not to mention game speed scales with difficulty

I fucking loved that game.

WoL is objectively the worst
progression and narrative are much funner in HotS
LotV is rightfully the best and funnesst and alarak is great
unfortunately LotV has that terrible
TERRIBLE epilogue
>ignore all your progression
>obnoxious missions
>terrible narrative

Battle for Middle-Earth's a good series. BFME1 in particular had the best fucking campaign. Your actions actually mattered more in that than in all the EA RPGs to follow. Boromir manages to survive Amon Hen? He travels with Aragorn/Legolas/Gimli to Rohan before splitting off with Gandalf/Pippin to lead the defense at Minas Tirith, fully playable. Hell, he's overpowered.

Both campaigns were narrated by Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee too, so that's a plus.

people say EA has always been shit but it churned out the jedi games
and the great LotR games
what the fuck happened

Don't worry. Iron Harvest will save us.

Attached: iron-harvest-button-3jpg-f484ff[1].jpg (700x700, 57K)

We say EA was always shit because it hurts too much to look back and remember what they once were.

Changes in management is a possibility. Wilson became CEO in 2013, if there were still good EA games right before that date, you have your answer.

Does he fight in Helm's Deep? How's that work out?

Hilariously well. Boromir has the ability to more or less stunlock any enemies around him. Properly used, he can keep the swarm at bay while you pick off the mines, meaning the walls never explode, you never lose your fresh army to upgraded Uruk-Hai, and when Eomer comes to save the day with the army you've been building up in his chapters (which will be hilariously powerful usually), it's less Gandalf saving the day and more him mopping up.

These two then combine into one mega-Rohan force that will likely shitstomp Minas Tirith. Boromir surviving basically creates a snowball effect that makes the game much easier.

actually i say what hte fuck happened but i reemember
>look at how nexon makes money
>we need to be more korean
if i recall it's not unlike COH1's
>you retain unit from a mission
>it keeps its progression and you have a new assblaster in the mission to command around
minus the progression, because i think they only added that in BFME2

didn't that start life as a sort of flash-type game? ala "command and conquer" for the phone?
>build order is all that matters, just make X units and they walk to the enemy's place
how the hell did it evolve into an RTS

This will be dumbed down CoH 1.

I wish this would play like Men of war, it's literally perfect for the setting.

Any games like Stronghold? I know a new one is releasing eventually but I just want more

Find a flaw.

No. The artist of IH Jakub Rozalski and his friend made a board game call Sythe set in the Jakub Rozalski's world he calls 1920+. King Art Games loved het board game and his art so much that decided to contact him and make an actual game based off his art and ideas. Everything in the game is designed by Jakub and based off his art. He has some amazing art. He really loves European folk lore and WW1 along with being a pretty big gamer.

>What are the best games in the genre?
C&C through Red Alert 2 are all amazing and top of the genre
SC1 and War2 are great
For autism and wargaming Graviteam beats everything flat out

Age of Empires 2 is a great first RTS

there's nothing like the AvP game

What was the name of the RTS/FPS hybrid that was released years ago? where you could be the guy in control of the base or you could play as a single guy on the field?

Executive Commander?

*assault

>make cyclopes
>keep making cyclopes
>what is heroic age?

I think that's it. There was another one, Eximus or something like that.

Why aren't those kinds of games fucking huge? I know the RTS genre is approaching dead & buried but FPS games have been huge for years. It seems like they'd be a natural pairing.

I'm not really sure. I think it's hard to balance probably
They patched that bug I believe

Excellent game that really deserves a sequel or remake/remaster whatever it's called.

Considering that forged alliance was the last relevant rts supplement to be produced, yes, it deserves to be forgotten. The only hope for rts now is Homeworld 3 and waiting for them to fuck up the Total Annihilation remaster, if it ever happens.

can get to be a pro with ure coaching

Attached: 1565487651916.jpg (653x523, 124K)

Why do RTS devs want to kill their own genre

>Homeworld 3
>hope
it'll be meh in a best case scenario

chasing after casual audiences or thinking they can dethrone Starcraft
Devs forget the core RTS experience is a solid single player campaign and map creators/editors

>They patched that bug I believe
Took them long enough. That bug was around for way too fucking long.
The worst is that the original didn't even have it.

Is it the best RTS campaign?

Attached: 448849-company-of-heroes-windows-front-cover.jpg (800x1138, 192K)

I hate Christie Goldens writing holy fuck. I liked the Arthas book though.

can we get a Yea Forums lobby for aoe2 and battle it out?

Chris Taylor sold his soul to Microsoft when he gave his second, rag-tag, derelict shell of a company Gas Powered Games to them. In doing so, they forced him to port the next Supreme Commander to the XBOX (big surprise!), spearheading the postulation that RTS games are dying and being dumbed down while being dismissed in favor of the first mobas. Here we are today, years later, waiting for a phoenix to rise from the ashes while watching pathetic attempts from people who do not understand the genre like Grey Goo come and go in a matter of weeks.

Let's do FA, instead.

Attached: Forged Alliance.webm (760x760, 2.89M)

im down

Has Taylor done anything since SupCom 2?

I wish it was as fun to play as it is to watch.

According to wiki, he's been in a downward spiral starting from the disbanding of Gas Powered Games, joining the group Wargaming, cancelling a project (kings and castles), leaving Wargaming, and is now begging for money on the internet for an indie project called Intergalactic Space Empire.

That's too bad. The guy clearly has a knack for designing great RTS games.

WC2 and SC contain the blueprints that WC3 was able to realise.

This is the same company that replaced Kerrigan's VA because MUH CELEBRITY ACTOR

Yeah, they're that retarded

His main flaw is being overambitious, in my opinion. What made Total annihilation great was the behavior of the units, the weight of the weapons and the trajectories they traveled, and frankly, the simplicity; but it seems like all he saw was the scale it could be and said "lets do this, but bigger and wider".

>progression
>narrative
>your units matter/carry over
>even has a boss battle
probably
>in one of the first RTS's to have dynamic music
very probably

I take it you prefer TA over SupCom/FA?

when he was alive it was really well written but it turned into rushed shit as soon as he became a death knight and all the fantasy shit started happening

I do prefer TA over supcom/FA, but I have a soft spot for both.

I'm sorry, but are you saying that a magical plague that turns people zombies created at the behest of a bunch of demons isn't fantasy shit?

Thoughts on these? I think they're super comfy.

Attached: Stronghold.jpg (1544x1052, 632K)

i mean everything after he kills his father felt like rushed shit because it was like 3/4 of the way through the book and you could tell she was rushing to finish the story

This is literally all 100% completely wrong, except maybe MAYBE at the lowest newb scrub level of play. At high level it's not merely wrong it's the opposite, top tier players rarely make it into T3/T4.

You shouldn't shit on a game you either never played at all or never played beyond maybe a few campaign missions.

Attached: Cybran ACU.jpg (800x800, 68K)

I'd say command and conquer red alert 2 is peak RTS. I also enjoyed tiberium wars and Planetary Annihilation TITANS

Play Supreme Commander. It's quite a short campaign, but still a lot of fun.

>Each unit tier utterly obsoletes the previous ones so it's either a rush or a race to T3/Experimental meme shit without too much thought put into what your army looks like
named 1 (one) RTS where this isn't the case

>Warcraft 2
>underrated
maybe it was only in my country but WC2 was a smash hit and (so i thought) blizzard's claim to fame before the big releases

They're comfy. They need to make another good one

WC2 wasn't that bad for mirroring, WC1 was the game where they functionally identical outside of the resident spellcaster and their summon

>WC2 wasn't that bad for mirroring
WC2 factions were literally identical outside of ogre-magi/paladins, death knights/magi and the troll/elf upgrade

I wonder if they're ever going to integrate that new AI that DeepMind has been playing around with.

WCII was blatantly balanced against humans. Bloodlust Ogre Magi>Paladins, all the time. Add haste for maximum blitz.

Sorry you zoomers got the short end of the stick when it came to gaming

Yes.

What I don't get about Red Alert's story is why is Einstein on the European-American side after killing Hitler? That guy was a literal socialist who supported Stalin

Starcraft.

He supported Stalin for a very VERY brief period before learning he was the world leader equivalent of a school shooter.

I thought he flipped in support for Stalin after the Moscow trials?

For what was basically an Age of Kings clone, this game sure had a hell of a lot of soul. Community campaigns and multiplayer maps were pretty bomb too. In my top 5 RTS games to play socially or single player for sure.

If you are not korean streaming on afreeca there is no point in playing starcraft 1.
