I found that giving mages more defense and HP is a good idea in these cases. Pure strength and attack power shit goes to the MC.

If your sustain isn’t an issue then focus wholly on the strengths of the most potent characters. (99.99% of games ever made)
If you find that you can’t survive enough of the time (rare in most games) then you’ll be forced to improve your defenses.
If you can annihilate the problem or heal through it then damage is always the answer
