The new enemy markers in Daemon X Machina reminded me of the little markers above your teammates in Star Fox, and there's radio chatter in the game with little portraits, too.

Maybe a mission based game like that, where you go on smaller assignments in the same regions with different objectives each time. With it you earn reward money which you can use to upgrade and customize your Arwing and other vehicles. The original stages could easily be their own missions, and extra standalone boss battles would be really easy to implement.

Whilst you might expect a true successor to be longer from start to finish (which this should be, players should be allowed to save and quit mid 'run') the real value in terms of playtime should be the sheer amount of knock-on effects for each possible route through the system that will make the same mission unfold differently depending on the route you took to get to it.

It doesn't have to be a 64 remake but the concept of a branching story line of levels resulting in a different final outcome would be great. Also important is New Space Combat where it actually feels like there is an actual larger battle taking place and that you're playing a roll as an Elite Strike Team. Story choices result in missions where Team Star Fox is either working alongside the Cornerian Armada or being legitimately alone in the field and the AI responds accordingly. If you're going alone and behind enemy lines and you don't do your job fast you and your team WILL get absolutely dog piled by the nearby systems sending reinforcements.

Aside from this improvement to the fundamentals of the gameplay, the main appeal should be customization. You might always be Fox McCloud but your ship and team should be very customizable. You can unlock different characters who excel at different elements of Combat (Flight, Aiming, IDing Enemies or Hazards, Exploiting weaknesses etc). The Team Star Fox you start with of Fox, Falco, Pepper, and Slippy is a good all arounder but different choices can make a team heavily specialized in certain tactics by sacrificing others. Additionally when characters work together it will upgrade their chemistry, making them subsequently perform better the next time they fly together. You get your base Arwing which you can unlock new form and weapon variants for, or entirely new models of ships that play unique rolls. You unlock different customization with your character decisions during the story and these carry over into New Game Plus.
