the thing that connects the joycon to the console folds, for whatever reason (probably so it fits the controller's shape when it's not connected)
it seems this is basically a different shape for the joycons, likely so it's more ergonomic
they also have a curved one (pic related)
it kinda looks like these wouldn't work that well as sideways controllers like the regular joycon

It's an optical illusion. If you look closely you'll see that the joy cons don't fold away from you, it's the screen that folds towards you.
