Compatible with gamepads (but I only tested it on my dualshock 4). Don't run mame.exe. Go into the shortcuts folder and run the Metal Slug you want from there.
IMPORTANT: Mame is funky, so when you start a Metal Slug, hit the ~ key and use the up arrow, or up on the analog stick, to navigate to "Overclock CPU 1" and 0. Use right to set them to max, then press ~ again to close this. This overclocks the "cabinet" CPU and makes the game run smooth as butter, since the game drops many frames otherwise. Has no effect on your actual CPU. Have fun.

Smash is trying to legitimize itself as a fighting game and Ken being widely accepted and a “good” character in the game opened the door for other fighting game characters. I anticipate a Darkstalkers character at some point and more characters from fighting games that aren’t exactly hugely popular.

it's gonna sound weird, but a lot of people i knew that played Attack didn't do it because of waifus (atleast the majority, there's some that like them), it's because it's Metal Slug and they liked the gameplay and pvp aspect (even with all the p2w trash and poor balance) or how it expands the lore of the series.
some of the waifus are nice but lets be real, the arcade gameplay is the reason that we all come back to metal slug.
thats more or less one of the better things about msa but it needs a better direction and handling on how its done.

Run Fightcade.exe, register an account (they won't email you anything, or ask you to confirm it), then you'll be met with a lobby menu. Scroll to the Metal Slug rooms, and you can click on anyone's person icon to the left of their name to "challenge" them. If they accept, boom, you're co-opping Metal Slug with some guy from somewhere else in the world. It's a good time.
IMPORTANT: Select settings from the top bar, click on locate roms folder. Navigate to Fightcade>Roms, hit select folder. Now you're good to go.
Note: Type /help in the chat to get a list of commands for the lobby.

Forgot something. You can overclock the cabinet CPU like with MAME, but not during multiplayer. When in-game, go to the top bar and select Game>Adjust CPU speed. Slide that fucker to the right.

Got into metal slug attack recently - any units a newbie should work towards? I read people don’t recommend spending medals until you hit level 50 and can actually gear / deploy the good stuff. Should I be farming for anything from Another Story? Or from one of the many shops? There is an event going now but grinding the lower level stages seems like it would take years.

here are the sprites for the original characters. You have no reason to commit to that garbage. You're just gonna regret wasting your time with it.
-don't buy units from another story
-do all the dailies every day for msp and sorties
-do one online match, don't worry if you lose, you get 30 medals just for doing it
-leave another story for later, focus on attack mode and clear elite
-once you have world/elite clear, focus on events, try to join a guild to help you out with it
-good units that don't require gacha come from events
>if you want decent units to start, buy some from the battle shop, Special Destrade is good for newbies for example
>Some good units are in the shop (sp. amber or sp.molly) they cost medals but they're worth it
>best units come from step-up/campaign box, if you have enough medals it's worth rolling there
-be sure to have atleast a stunner or a antistun unit (growth & clyne, josette, rocky are the best but they're from special cranks)

The metal slug attack wiki has some data on certain units, you might want to check it out too.
Most units that buffs stats are faction only (marco/eri or sp.Julia/Immortal Allen) so they require a full deck with nothing but that faction's units to get the max ammount of support possible.

Metal Slug one is natually a laggy game regardless of it being ported, the only version I know of that fixes the lag is the Metal Slug anthology version on the wii. I think the PS4 also has the anthology version on the online store but I can't vow for that version. Other than that NeoGeo emulation works fine
