Why doesn’t Square make games like this anymore?

Generic above average jrpg can barely make ends anymore you expect this to sell?
Square is too bloated. Games become $20M titles instead nowadays, instead of taking risks with small teams like their PS1 library or SaGa games.
Too much soul. Also, VS is one of those games that doesn't treat the player like an idiot, so zoom zooms wouldn't even make it to the first boss.
Once upon a time Square had competition.
They combined with their competition and now have a monopoly.
Monpoly leads to mediocrity,
Direct reason is it didn't make money despite a lengthy development and a 40/40 Famitsu score (which at the time had only happened twice before). Executives insisted on Vaan and Penelo in XII in the wake of Vagrant, arguing a middle-aged protag doesn't sell.
Indirect reason is that Square long ago got rid of everyone who knows how to make a complete and cohesive product with any consistency.
have you seen the average jrpg these days
they are complete trash
they are made for the most braindead otaku crowd, the money is made with merch, not game sales
It'd do better nowadays if it was remade as a Souls-style game.
That being said, you need a team with vision and talent to pull it off. I'm afraid current SE would turn it into a moeblob anime trash game with no semblance of art direction or taste.
Maybe outsource the IP to From Software and let them do something with it. SE no longer has what it takes anymore.
I spent more time in the menu than actually playing this fucking game.
Good thing the menus still look great to this day unlike N64 games like OOT which they look like they were made in ms paint and with comic sans.
I have realized that basically all my favorites games fall under the "flawed masterpiece" category, this being no exception
The modern industry, due to inflated development prices, is clearly too afraid to experiment, and what we get is a market full of polished but safe products with recycled ideas from games that were made in the past. Small studios are our only hope when it comes to originality
no budget for experimental B games when their AAA shit takes all the talent and time to make
SquareENIX not SquareSOFT
I thought Tokyo rpg factory would be making things like this instead they are making shit like Oninaki.
Yea
I still don't understand this argument. Ashley was only 25.
In FFIV and FFVII, the majority of the cast were in their 20s or older.
They have no talent and their games are soulless attempts to cash in on the NES/SNES nostalgia instead of the golden days of PS1 experimental JRPGs.
They are LITERALLY a factory, their name suits them perfectly.
I'm currently emulating it but had to drop it a little because I have a lot of reading to do to figure out the workbench and little to no time to sit down and do it
Basically it comes down to money.
Games have gotten more expensive to develop now than back then, a game like that today would cost millions, game prices have remained fixed despite inflation making everything else more expensive meaning they either have to sell more copies to make back their investment or find other avenues for remuneration (dlc, lootboxes, ect), the gaming industry has grown since then and there are more gamers than ever, but that doesn't just offset either of the first two on it's own, which means games today have to appeal to a wider more generalized audience to make back their development costs. Wider audiences needed for success means fewer experimental games make sense to make.
Vagrant Story is namedrop-core
I'm sorry I'm not zoomer savvy enough to understand what you're trying to convey with your post.
>unironically using the term zoomer
Sorry, what do you kids like to be called again? GenZ?
What the fuck does “namedrop-core” mean.
>always die at the first fight after the tutorial and give up
Am I bad at games or is there a big difficulty spike?
It's a GenZ thing, Everything is a something-or-other-core these days and they never get around to explaining what they mean by it.
Because the game industry has gone to fuck since 2007. It wasnt always like this
You most probably just didn't really understand the mechanics and/or are bad at QTEs.
What an amazing fucking run, we will never see such consistency and variety ever again
I mean it's something like how people only play it to get good taste points in here. Pure sóy based thought to have
People will do whatever it takes to derail a video game discussion around here
Is it really? Every thread of Vagrant Story here or in /vr/ is half the post shitting on the game for the menus and gameplay.
Because Matsuno left
Because they stopped being Squaresoft.
You don't really have to go full autism on the workbench, just knowing how to make certain materials is good so you could have weapon and armor progression:
wood > iron > hagane etc etc
How did it get this bad?
>he didn’t de-blur his n64
user.....
Pretty much everything post-merger is trash. I'm guessing the talent left.
Constant menu work makes it tedious for me when i try to replay it. I didnt mind it back when it came out though.
The soft became enix.
Everything after Final Fantasy Tactics: Advance is trash (they became SE after) so go figure.
I want to read the ingame tutorial whole before progressing. I already had to use a bunch of healing items and lost a bunch of progress because I didn't know how to chain
>a mainline final fantasy title every year or two
For a series as experimental as FF likes to be, this should still be the norm instead of Square pulling the bullshit they do nowadays.
You should probably download a brady games guide i’m sure it’s on the internet somewhere.
The manual for the game isn’t exactly big so i doubt it’s a huge help.
Because this game was developed by Squaresoft, not Square Enix.
Yes the constant need to return to the menu just to switch weapons and armor is annoying now. If there ever were a remastered/remake, it'd be great if they added quickswapping.
This is depressing. To add insult to injury, Sony's CEO said they'll make LESS games in the future
>reading a guide
Nah, I'm gonna beat it blind no matter how much it takes
Why do you ignore all the other PS4 exclusives? Are you one of those “movie” shitters?
most PS4 exclusives are literally fucking movie games
Nice hot take where can i subscribe for more tranny content?
>everyone I disagree with is a tranny
You should dilate sweetie.
IMO the solution is to cut budgets and dev team sizes in half across the board. Games had smaller budgets, higher relative returns on investment and were able to take more risks/be made more quickly. Now everything has a giant inflated budget with hundreds of people working on them and companies expect upsurd returns to justify the costs. It results in fewer games that take less risks in order to be as marketable as possible. Fewer, soulless samey feeling games. Shit sucks
Square had soul in the 90s.
Shame the pic related was never imported to the West.
