All of the game's first year of content is going to be free (vanilla, Curse of Osiris, Warmind) and if you want you can just buy whatever expansions/seasons you want to play after that. They said that you'll start the game at 750 and "ready to jump into endgame content" so I think that means you can skip the shitty campaigns and just do raids with your friends.

The free portion of the game will be the base game and all content before Forsaken (Destiny's A Realm Reborn from late 2018). You still get all the gameplay improvements and pvp/gambit activities introduced by the expansion and following updates, you "only" doesn't get the story campaign (which is pretty good on it's own right) and endgame content related to it (Dreaming City, raids, seasonal updates, etc).

I never played Destiny 1 because fuck playing fps games on console, lol, and I had no issues following what was happening in the story.
I sometimes googled round lore stuff if something caught my eye and I learned it was covered in 1, so obviously there are lots of stuff that makes more sense for Destiny 1 players, but nothing really serious.

It was very boring when I played. Somehow they made something that should be fun, quick and kinetic into a slog.

Also it seemed like all I was ever fighting were the same 3 or 4 enemies wearing different skins or models. You had the fat rare guy, the thin guy, the crouchy small guy in packs, and bosses were just bullet sponge variations thereof, over and over forever and ever. Events were just the same thing over and over and over.

PVP was ok but I ended up just using that better devils revolver and poppin heads left and right but that's all I was doing. Revolver, over and over, sometimes a beam weapon because it seemed to get people toasty.

Cross saves work, but cross play doesn't. To be honest I dont know if cross play would ever work in Destiny, especially not during PvP.

If you own Forsaken on Battle.net, then your expansion purchases will transfer over. If you own it on a console and you want to upgrade to PC, it won't. Your save and items related to it will transfer over but not the license to Forsaken.
Thankfully though Shadowkeep doesn't require Forsaken to play, which I assume is more than could've been said for something like Rise of Iron.
