Super Smash Brothers Ultimate is the greatest celebration of Nintendo’s history and the entire video game industry as a whole.
Give me three legitimate reasons why your favorite vidya character is significant enough to be represented in the ultimate celebration of gaming.

1. Resident Evil represents the Horror genre better than anyone else. Leon (Chris/Jill could fill this spot desu) is a relevant and highly popular character from this series.
2. Has a variety of weapons he could use ranging from Pistols, Shotguns, Rocket Launchers, and the Spark Shot. Could even pull enemy summons from MVC2 Jill.
3. I don’t need a third reason.

My favorite is the main antagonist of the second most popular entry of Nintendo's most popular franchise. The evil event he caused is already in the game.
1. Classic NES staple, so timeless and iconic newer entries of the series still use the NES sprites, fucking western animated TV show ripped off the sprites for it, that iconic. Would be similar to Megaman in that they would just be adapting the sprites themselves to a 3D model. Games have been primarily on Nintendo consoles, even the newer ones have been 3DS exclusive, new collection on the switch for the anniversary, the soccer game was branded as Nintendo World Championship Soccer when localized.
2. Due to the recent anniversary there have been more Kunio games released in the past 5 years than ever before, including a mobile game and multiple spinoffs. Now more than ever is the River City Renaissance
3. Represents the beat em up genre, a genre yet to be represented in Smash.

Also forgot to mention River City Ransom and Super Dodgeball were included in the launch lineup of NES online, as was Double Dragon - a series which has connections to RCR, not only owned by the same company but the protagonist of Double Dragon appear as bosses in RCR and regularly appear in all the spinoffs. This means Double Dragon could be represented at the same time, two birds one stone, and include music and mii costumes from that series.
If you count how many people love zelda vs mario, not how well known they are, I think it goes to Zelda. But yeah you're right about Pokemon

3. Goemon recently got in as a Mii Fighter costume, so that means that, even now, people are still interested in him and that developers would want to see him as a fully-realized character in a future version of Smash.

1. The series has a decent history in Japan, having many installments, and even a few anime series.
2. In the US, Symphonia was used to drive sales for the Gamecube since there was a lack of JRPGs at the time for the system. Phantasia (the first game) also got a (admittedly bad) GBA port.
3. The series is still going on to this day, with Tales of Arise being the newest game to come out next year at the earliest.

The minute Astral Chain was announced and confirmed to be a Nintendo IP I knew it would be a candidate for Smash, let’s just hope the alien cops have a better fate then poor Spring-Man.
Man, I still wish Spring-Man was playable. I actually lost money betting on him being playable like Inkling but I’m more upset at Spring-Man’s fate as an assist then the money.
I mean, I get what you’re saying but what makes Smash special is that it’s about Nintendo and gaming in general at this point, adding a non-vidya character like Goku would ruin the magic. Needing an origin in video games has always been the only real unwritten rule for Smash anyways.
This. Keep smash for video game only characters. Adding Goku would be a floodgate for more characters like spongebob, bugs bunny, homer simpson, peter griffin, johnny bravo, etc.

Lloyd is from the 4th (or 5th depending on how you want to look at annoucement/release order) Tales game. The series started on the SNES in Japan, and games 2 and 3 were on the PS1. When Symphonia (Lloyd's game) came out, it was exclusive to the Gamecube outside of Japan until remasters happened. Nintendo Power did a huge push (and Nintendo helped fund Symphonia too, I think the voice cast was a part of it) so Lloyd was considered to be the Tales rep if the series ever got one. I'll say it again because it really was big: there were no real JRPGs on the Gamecube at the time Symphonia came out (before Paper Mario/Pokemon/Fire Emblem (if you want to count that) each got their Gamecube installment.)
Part of the reason Lloyd gets mentioned a lot too is because outside of being the most associated with Nintendo, he also uses two swords when he fights, therefore making him more "unique" than the meme about anime swordsmen. I would personally prefer Ludger from Xillia 2 (he uses dual swords/sledgehammer/dual guns/spears as the game he's from has weapon swapping as a mechanic) but realistically Lloyd or Cress (think Marth but for Tales) has the best chance of getting in IMO. I would be stoked if Lloyd got in if not just for the music he would come with.

Dr. Mario is a popular game series, Chrom and Lucina are main characters in a extremely popular Nintendo IP and Dark Pit is an antagonist of a really good game based on a classic Nintendo IP.
All characters in Ultimate have valid reasons to be there, try harder to dispute this.
1. New Nintendo IP, no brainer there
2. Good way to further advertise the game as well drum up interest for a potential sequel
3. Would be a legitimately really fun character to play with having massive range, interchangeable ARMs and a power up mechanic

Yes he’s an assist trophy but it would be piss easy to reskin the assist as either Spring-Tron or Ribbon Girl, which would mean even more representation. Springboy needs to see justice is all I’m saying.

Sure and if we’re judging characters by the coolness scale then Dr. Coyle is the best candidate because she’s the best but it’s made clear by this point that central protagonists/mascots get in before any other character in their respective franchise and Spring-Man by far was the biggest snubbing I’ve seen from Smash.
Like I said I think it’d be easy enough to re-skin Assist Springman as Ribbon Girl or Spring Tron so that Springman can be playable as he should’ve been from the start.

Smash isn't a crossover. It's just a fighting game where they replaced all the characters with nintendo characters so it would sell better. Like Mario 2.
1. Treasure are industry legends. Their games are pure nonsensical fun, most boomer gamers have probably played and loved one of their games without realising. They deserve a rep.
2. While none of their characters have ever been a major hit, Mischief Makers sold about as well as the average Mega Man game on a platform with a much smaller install base than the NES.
3. Her playstyle would be very unique. An almost-entirely grab-based character with tons of air mobility and jumps and many kill throws, plus the ability to catch any projectile, shake it to power it up and throw it back. Perhaps even the mixing pot to keep three of the same projectile to make an upgraded version.

The godfather of FPS whose original game is famous for being able to run on anything. Doom transcends platforms and hardware limitations and has touched the hearts of millions in the process.
