Be honest with me, is Final Fantasy VIII a masterpiece or complete garbage?

Convoluted pants-on-head retarded story (still marginally better than X-2's) and mediocre combat that could be totally broken by playing cards for hours on end.

I'm 30 and grew up with FF8, it's one of my favorites. Here's my take on it:

- The new models look great in general.
Squall in particular is the one that's really noticeably changed, his hair is based on his Dissidia look and it clashes badly with the old cutscenes.

- Cutscenes look great

- I feel like there's new sounds in cutscenes I never heard before. I've played it on PC emulated from PS1 in the last couple years, and I swear I've never heard Edea's jewelry jingle before (in the FMV leadup to the final disc 1 fight)

- Bizarrely the backgrounds look fucking horrible, they're blurry like someone smeared Vaseline on them, sometimes there's a jarring transition where in an FMV it will look great, then it transfers to the background and it's NOTICABLY more awful by comparison

- Sometimes there's bizarre oversights where characters don't have their new models inserted properly and they're super blurred out along with the background. Pic related is one very noticeably example of this

- Sometimes there's weird sound transitions where music cuts off abruptly instead of fading out

- I think some AI routines are fucked up. For example, in the PS1 version Diabolos would cast Curaga on you if you cast Demi on him and he doesn't do it anymore. (This might have been a bug originally though)
Also, I remember Confuse just making your party members use their regular attack on random people, but now all it does it make my characters use up good items and magic. What the fuck?

- If you're not a purist the 3x speed mode is amazing for when you're just drawing magic for forever

tl;dr I give it like a 7. It's always been a good game but the remaster definitely seems cheap/rushed in some very visible places. I'm really hoping mods will clean up the backgrounds later on.

If this if your first time playing the game you should seriously just emulate the PS1 version first and see if you like it. It's not noticeably better than the original.

You don't need cheats. FF8 is piss easy as it is.
Anyone who cries about junctioning being too hard is a fucking pissbaby, there's literally an auto-junction button that sets everything up for you if you want

The tl;dr is you spend 20 minutes fighting on the beach near Balamb Garden. Get Ice/Water Magic Refine for Shiva, turn your Fish Fins into Waters, and you instantly have great stats. Give it to Squall for Strength and he will fucking beast anything through the end of Disc 1.

When you get back from Dollet, spend some time and get Life Magic Refine for Siren, make Curagas from Tents, and you instantly have 3000 HP for your entire party at level 10 or so.

You're not punished for playing the game. You're punished for grinding to overcome everything instead of using the systems provided.

A stupid fucking change but I'm not crying over it.

The card game is incredible the story is ok and the gameplay is ok too. Not the best FF but far from the worst. Tbh I played through it several times when it first came out and loved it but I don’t think I could ever play another FF GAME.

That and the cheat where the party always has initiative makes drawing magic an absolute breeze. That's the only time I've been using those cheats.

Well, that and sometimes I just plain don't want to deal with random encounters.

he still does, you got to use it from your own magic stock rather than draw casting it.
I also had the 8-bit cid happen when i played the pc port, which shows how lazy they've been with this remaster
