Too bad the gameplay is terrible. All other dead genres seeing retro-revivals like this tend to turn out great because people can analyzed what made the classics good and improve on them but for whatever reason that sort of modern retrospective take eludes all attempts at modernizing the beat 'em up genre. Like even basics command shit feels terrible in that game.

While I agree that none of them would ever make it into my to 10 favorite arcade games, there are plenty of very competent games in that genre and the retro revival attempts are consistently worse than even those standards.

You take a game like Code of Princess EX for the switch and compare it to even a mediocre example from the 90's like Shadow over Mystara and just from like a functional game perspective there is absolutely no competition, Shadow over Mystara shits all over it. You look at the indie scene for something like Metroidvanias and they're pretty much all at a minimum competent and playable on a level exceeding the average game from that time.

Without the ambiance of the arcade, the adrenaline of your friends cheering you on, and the prospect of getting you initials (or ASS) at the top of the leaderboard so you can brag every time you show up, the allure of beat 'em ups is dead.

Beat 'em ups rightfully evolved into two other distinct entities.
Warriors games, where you take a single character to cream thousands of enemies for mindless fun, and more challenging action games like DMC, Bayonetta, and Ninja Gaiden that maintain the fighting off hoards up enemies aspect and coming back to improve your "Score", but without the dull as dirt mechanics.

I think there is a place for beat'em ups that take on RPG elements. Guardian Heroes, Dragon's Crown, OG River City Ransom, and Odin Sphere. are excellent examples of what you can do with the genre.

the other way you could take it is to load the game with candy. fun animation, tons of moves, and just bright, fun environments can refresh a stale formula. Making the stages shorter helps, too. Astal, for the Sega Saturn, is one of my favorite games because of just how stupid gorgeous the art and music are.
