Half-Life ruined gaming by turning games into a corridor you run through with constant fake urgency and discouraged exploration. This irony is made greater by the fact that more and more time is put into the art in modern games only for it to be rushed through or diluted in an open world game.
Half-Life ruined gaming by turning games into a corridor you run through with constant fake urgency and discouraged...
Corridor shooters existed before Half-Life.
I meant half life 2
Coincidentally, corridor shooters also existed before Half-Life 2. Your argument is still shit because even if it's a linear experience, there are tons of hidden areas full of items that encourage exploration in HL2. If you're just sprinting to the end of each level without looking around then that's your own fault.
no it wasn't it was a giant maze with no rules except find the exit.
Problem is, back in the 90s you had maybe 2 or 3 decent shooters to choose from and if you got stuck in one you'd keep searching for a key or switch until you figured it out. Now if you get stuck players just will quit and give the game a bad review if they don't have an arrow that says GO THIS WAY because there's so many other options to choose from
I hate the real time cutscenes and waiting on NPCs
Yeah but the stories did not encourage the urgency half life 2 feels like a race against the clock and there is far less exploration to do than say in hl1. Linearity is not the issue here.
actually half-life was a game where the art and level design were expected to make you take your time as you move through it. It's a really lovely design decision, totally counter to open world bullshit
it's like 25 minutes out of a 12 hour game.
fuck you you are gay
What the fuck about the game is "urgent"? I can't remember a single section that'll force you to move on or spawn enemies to encourage progress. You go entirely at your own pace for the entire game. At this point I am convinced you have either not beaten the game or immediately sprint to the end of each level once combat starts. You can just kill the finite enemies and fuck around.
>half life 2 feels like a race against the clock
didn't feel like that to me at all. i dicked around in ravenholm for ages cutting zombies in half by flinging saw blades all over the place, looked around all the cells and shit in nova prospekt, had fun running around with ant lions, etc. i only felt slightly rushed in water hazard and towards the end where you have to blow up striders to try and save as many resistance fighters as i could
What I don't like about Half-Life 2 is the lack of aliens from Xen and how unsatisfying the weapons feel. Sure the weapons are effective but they sounds terrible and the combine barely flinch when being shot.
Half Life 2 is literally perfect.
I tout Half Life 2 as one the greatest games of all time to anyone that'll listen but it definitely has flaws. The strider battles near the end of the game are tedious and the vehicle segments end just short of becoming annoying. I think I still have saves just after the strider fights in 2 and EP 2 just in case I want to replay them so I can skip that shit.
It's funny how even the OP won't actually claim HL2 is bad, he just somehow blames it for other devs making bad games.
Here's a hint, devs making shit games isn't anyone's fault but their own. Except possibly the idiots who buy the games
You can blame play testers for the dumbing down of HL2. However, corridor shooters did exist prior to both HLs.
You can lament this, but the antithesis would be maps like Turok 2 where you get lost due to backtracking and multiple pathways.
This board is shitty, but the constant contrarianism towards Half-Life 2 is one of my most hated aspects of it. You people are the shittiest fucking hipsters and would instantly turn on all the games you love if they suddenly became adored by millions of other people. Fuck all of you massive shitstains.
I can't tell if you're OP mad nobody else will shit on the game or if you're some retard who didn't read the thread and can't tell that everyone is defending the game
this thread is full of people saying they like hl2 though
I don't really like HL2. HL1 was more fun, 2 tried to be more mature and the gameplay was slowed down a lot.
the mood.
HL2 is a mediocre game where HL1 was fantastic.
>hear fast paced music
>get tunnel vision
literally your own midget mind constricting the gameplay
nigger they are almost exactly the same game.
Yeah, you're right. It's got some problems. Still pretty damn great, though. Episode 1 isn't exactly stellar, either.
You can't deny that half-life 2 started the trend.
Episode 1 is probably one of the weakest parts of Half-Life 2, but it's still pretty good despite having a much tighter focus and being short. It serves almost entirely as a narrative bridge so there's not much to justify replaying it but I still enjoy doing so now and then.
intent matters, there's much less to explore than in hl1, even the episodes are better.
Halo: CE released three years before HL2.
Nope my man that was CoD4, in half life 2 you barely have any sections were you are not exploring solving puzzles or shooting, and they are a nice change of pace so you can get soaked in the world while in call of duty all you do is run in a fucking corridor shooting the same guns with the same damage values to the same reskined enemies, I fucking hate CoD for what it did to video games but I hate retards that say half life and halo killed shooters even more
>"aaaand welcome back to another episode of..."
>"CONTRARIAN OR BAIT!"
hl2 doesn't have the same sense of urgency and just lets you explore.
I meant halo
>aliens bearing down on earth with guaranteed extinction unless you fuck shit up
meandering, slow, forgiving
>everything is already permanently fucked and the aliens won so you're just trying to do anything at all
balls to the wall and intense as the narrative bears down with teeth-grinding action
>hating on striders
Sorry you can't coordinate
