Guys I'm a brainlet but have made it to around level 48. I'm in the middle of Part 5 and I'm still completely blind as to whether or not my character is shit or not. I seem to die really fast but im doing some pretty good damage with a few if my skills. Should I start over tomorrow and pay more attention to my skills/character build or just continue as is?

Nah, but just build crit and hiero totems, that will carry you long enough to get currency to deal more dmg than needed.

I can tell you I definitely won't be playing anything I particularly want to play because it would require at least a couple items that I could only realistically get by braving the rampant jewery and horrible exchange system of the game's trading network.

infernal legion 10x golemancer using ice golems because they're immune to the degen as elementalist, and with good movespeed they just zerg the map

I'd try some guided builds from sites.google.com/view/thetwilightstrand/guided-builds or Enkis ArcWitch
they're slightly outdated and not optimal, but the point of them is to teach you the game
I do not recommend playing Standard league under any circumstance besides sandboxing a build before leveling it on challenge league
