Been playing a lot more than I used to thanks to some random friends with the game, it's fun when you got dorks around the same skill level as you.
I apparently play a decently mean squiggle (and have Filia on my team because i like her too), but I have the problem of getting really tense and struggling to keep composure against difficult foes. How do I keep my brain in check and not start making mistakes from anxiety? Devolving into button mashing even for a moment can be a fucking death sentence, and I know what to do, but it seems the next stage of getting decent seems to be more mental than anything else.

Mostly fast games like Skullgirls, fast action games, and occasionally shooters. It's only a real issue with fighting games, though, which is a shame because when I have fun, I have a lot of fun.

As useless as it may sound, the best way to not be anxious is to just not be anxious.
Everyone chills in their own way so there's no cookie cutter solution for everyone. But as long as you're open to recognizing what your opponent is doing right and/or what you are doing wrong, you should be perfectly composed after the fact.
Some players use this mentality to get people to crumble under ridiculous mixup blenders or completely crush them with momentum via setplay resets. It's normal to get a little bit anxious, just learn how to harness it or suppress it, depending on the type of player you are.
Above all else, at the very least teach yourself not to mash. Be patient and watch for the real opportunity to mash your reversal out, otherwise you get hit with a fat counterhit combo that hurts even more than a normal one. Doubly so if they're trying to bait an IPS/undizzy burst out of you

Never really had this issue, personally. Maybe you just gotta breath or something before a match.

Against opponents on the same skill level as me, I tend to get anxious a lot and end up occasionally resorting to button mashing in a panic. It's kind of pathetic and I probably need to not get worked up as easily.
I also struggle with air combos. Positioning and timing really get much less forgiving when you're trying to juggle some poor sod in the air.

keeping calm is all about focusing on what you should be doing. dont be afraid to block, even if blocking isn't a good thing. if you have a bad habit like that, keep all of your attention trying to not do it. its okay if you lose. you can figure out what bad habits you have by rewatching matches.
air combos are about either buffering air moves or delaying hits. when learning combos, focus on one string at a time. you should be able to do a combo 10 times in a row without fail. practice until you reach that goal.
as long as you put in the time and know what to work on, you can learn this game

at least my parents are still around, unlike yours.

SG community is good and all, but it's really imbalanced. That is, there is an A B S O L U T E power gap between beginners and the pros. And lots of people say that the characters are balanced and stuff, but everyone and their mothers run BB, Bella, or Double, or a mix of the three. It makes the game really hard for beginners to get in and kind of locks them into using those two characters.
