Dana weren't main character, Adol was and soaked up most of the protagonist cliches.
This allowed Dana to avoid them and get her soul crushed to powder in the process.

And any instance of a character holding back during potentially lethal conflict with real weapons will never fail to make me seethe. SC and The Third seriously tested my tolerance for stupid LN crap at times (which is why Estelle is Bestelle for not playing into that shit and just goes all-out with an inherently non-lethal weapon), I could tell immediately in Cold Steel that it would go way past what I can accept.
