At the risk of sounding like a New Vegas circlejerker, NV actually does the opposite. In the creation screen your character looks like an old pedophile, but in-game turns out alright.
It's the lighting. The creator is always saturated so you can see what you're doing, but as soon as the face gets shadows it's going to look different.

sliders are shit, the best character creators are ones with lots of premade options which are all guaranteed to look well together. You cycle through the heads, the noses, the eyes, and hairstyles, and colors of things

Sliders are only shit if they're limited to very small adjustments so you can't actually make meaningful changes. Otherwise the only problem is a lack of skill in modeling.

The hardest choice I ever made with this game was deciding whether I wanted tall or short. Short was fun because you could throw her over your shoulder and run away with her. Tall she could catch and save you from being dragged away by rape harpies. The single save file for this on console was a crime.
