screenshots of the UI beta have been floating around for months. The fact they're removing the News feed that's always full of clickbait shit got me excited forever ago, but Valve is slow as fuck to implement changes because they know WE DON'T LIKE IT.

Games as service pretty much killed piracy. It only makes sense to pirate games from periods when constant connections and cloud elements of gameplay were not standard.

2004 steam had that putrid green layout
and the option to buy "packs" of valve titles, usually 3 valve games, in a bundle, like Counter-Strike, Half-Life 1, and DoD
Or another pack like TFC, Opposing Force, and Half-Life 2.

It was great, I kinda miss it but the layout was horrendously complicated.

I haven't actually pirated anything in years because I both don't think the games are worth pirating and it's just easier to grab it off Steam or GoG

Hitman 2016 will set a trend in the industry to Web 3.0 "experiences" such as leaderboards and drop-in co-op. These features will be sold as benefits to players, but their real purpose is to hinder pirates. I *think* you can play Hitman 2016 in singleplayer, but it amounts to the standard loadout only or having to modify the game's files to unlock things tied to the account system.

In 10 years, stuff like Sea of Thieves and Hitman 2016 will be more common than a 100% offline experience. With AAA resources to develop with, why not inject some always on component or internet dependency verified through an account system?

Steam's problem is that there's no hard set chain of command, Gabben's the boss and everyone else just spins the chore wheel. Whether a game gets okayed for steam is entirely dependent on who's turn it is to review it. Gaben could say "I want all porn games okayed" but if there's no managers to enforce the rule or fire people when necessary, then employees will just ignore the rule because no-one will confront them.

But none of those 'features' are attractive to me as a player, and none of the things the games offer are interesting to me either
We're already at the point where basically everything is online, mostly because it's easier to make an online game than to make good AI for a single player game. Adding other players is a quick and easy way to pad your game's feature list without much change to the overall design
It was going to happen regardless of any pirate problems, but if any game has to rely on these crutches to be 'good', then it won't be worth buying anyway so what is the point?
