well at most what will happen is the US region will be censored again judging by post where he says that an outfit that was changed in the localization is normal on the website, which means you can just load the Japanese version of the game with your JP account(you DO have one of those right?), and in an ideal world they just changed this one scene and Nintendo cracked down on shit like changing an entire chapter and restored it.

Eh, the edits to Tsubasa's outfit in the Free MV were probably the most absurd in the entire game. She barely had any cleavage to begin with there. I wouldn't be surprised if they're reversing some of the censorship with this version, but still leaving some. If Aversa's tits are still considered too offensive for the game though, they can't have uncensored much - I doubt the gravure modelling has been reverted.

The design of the outfit as a whole was different, there are black straps on the censored version, see pic related. You're right that this could still be censored, just less than before, but I doubt that.

They didn't translate or release either of the onsen DLCs. There were a bunch of either small edits to other outfits. The characters were aged up, and there were a number of occasional lines that got edited through the game.

I pirated it on Wii U and played it without censorship. It's a decent game, but definitely not great. It's clearly hampered by its limited scope, level design isn't anything special, the plot is complete dogshit and the combat system gets worse and worse as the game goes on due to being unable to skip or massively shorten Sessions which amount to unskippable cutscenes that get longer and longer (that's something they're fixing in this rerelease though).

Just something to note, the Japanese Wii U version of the game said "Enemy INFO" in the top right here, but the English version said "Enemy Radar" like it says here. This port says radar even in the Japanese version - so the port is probably based on the English version, not the Japanese.

That one chapter is honestly the only bit that actually messes with the game on any significant level. The Xenoblade 2 devs said that Nintendo localization staff fly over to Japan and will tell them what "needs" changing and it gets redone for all regions, since Nintendo just publishes the same version of each game everywhere now. It's an above average turn based JRPG that is an acquired taste. If the Shibuya setting sounds okay to you then look into it.
There are plenty of better options though if you have the choice. I'd easily recommend P5 instead, censorship aside it's just a better package overall.
Or maybe Trails of Cold Steel if you're looking for something a little different.

The black smoke wasn't in the Wii U Japanese version. We saw it in the Japanese direct, so the hope is that there's some explanation for that other than both versions being censored. The jeans were in all versions to begin with, so that isn't concerning.

Japan got the jeans, and frankly it was probably just a design change and not censorship. Japan did not get the smoke or anything. The west got a ton of arbitrary costume changes, a few CG cutscenes censored, the entire second dungeon is basically rewritten and the environment and character models involved are changed to remove any references to or traces of gravure modelling, some other dialogue is changed, and the onsen DLC were never translated and released either.

The worst thing about the western release were the inconsistencies in the censorship.
They covered some stuff only in cutscenes but not in the model, they changed the dungeon but left the swimsuit outfit in for a special attack.
Some outfits that show a lot of cleaveage are untouched while different outfits on the same character are altered.

It's a clusterfuck of arbitrary changes.
At least give a fuck if you're going through the effort of censoring at all.

Yeah, I fucking loved how down-to-earth Itsuki was. He's almost self-aware that he's a generic JRPG protagonist and has no goals of his own... so he makes it his goal to support his friends and be there for them (especially Tsubasa). Even the fact that he doesn't have full romance routes with the other characters work to make him a character of his own instead of a self-insert like Persona protags.

Game is same for everyone, it would be dumb to keep the stupid localization changes.

No one has mentioned this yet, but after playing the US version game twice over that they censored Maiko's cleavage. In shots were you see them at an angle, the lines are prominent and the shadows are deep. When you look at her head on, like in 90% of coversations the cleavage lines go away and the shadows blend into more a flesh tone. These are just images from google, but its more evident ingame.

I don't understand why people think Nintendo was so censorship heavy during that time. Any censorship they did was on TMS and TMS alone. Sure, Treehouse did (a really shitty) localization of Fates but they let a titty monster like Camilla strut around free of any edits or alterations. It’s pretty bad, story and characters are absolute garbage while the gameplay is incredibly mediocre at first to downright bad later on when every battle takes 6 minutes because you have to watch cutscenes for every single attack. They are at least letting you skip battle animations now so it might make the game go from a 3/10 to a 5/10.

Treehouse had active disdain for their audience for a while. IIRC they even took liberties with Happy Home Designer just to take shots at people criticizing them.

There were 4-10 outfits unlockable outfits for each of the characters, a pretty large enemy and dungeon variety as well as like 40 different weapons for each character. I'm guessing this re-release is to recoup the large budget this game got.
