Fighting games are already a niche genre and any fighting game that isn't called "Street Fighter" is even more obscure than that. The SNK fighters are huge in Latin America for whatever reason. I remember talking to my friend about video games in South America and he was completely dumbfounded when he found out King of Fighters was kind of a C-list franchise in the US. Pump It Up (Korean DDR) is also huge down there, while most parts of America consider it a weird DDR Alternative.

In you played on "las chispas" bootleg arcade machines and wanted to git gud to stand a chance against "cerillitos" packers in stores like walmart who spent all their coins on arcade machines. fuckers were insanely good you had to start somewhere. Terry is that beginner friendly character because his inputs are very easy and has small combos that teach the KoF fundamentals (that is to unga and never stop your unga). Chances are people told you that if you want to get good you should start out with Kyo or Terry. Characters like Iori or Vice are for more experienced players who know what they're doing.

Since which version of KoF was playing varied a lot, people stuck around with characters who didn't change much between version, so people who played in different joints often stuck to staple characters too.
