They were all dead.
For max comfy: Yo-Kai Watch
>that short chapter in Max Payne 3 in New York
FUUUUUUUCKKKKKKK
I don't know about the "all time" part but the first Darkness is overloaded with it.
Early 2000s games had excellent snow levels. Max Payne, No One Lives Forever, Rune, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and that one planet from Anachronox are a few that come to mind.
The final gunshot was an exclamation mark
to the rhetorical question that had lead to this point.
>present day
>two nights ago
So it's not the present day?
>we will never get a Darkness 3 despite the cliff-hanger as fuck ending 2 had.
>we will never save Jenny
I know user, it hurts.
silent hill 2
They mean 2001, since the first prologue chapter takes place in 1998, and the rest of the game is a flashback sequence of what led up to "They were all dead."
woops
Dead Space 1, it was dripping with hostility. Closest to 'hell' I think a game has gotten to me
close competition, but MDK
youtube.com
The Evil Within. No other game managed to have a dream like atmosphere with use of realistic locations.
SOCOM US Navy Seals 1 and 2
Rockstar are going to drop a Max Payne 1 remake/remaster next gen with the RDR2 snow engine, a-aren't t-they?
This is the first time I've seen someone describe hell as a series of repeating greyblackbrown metalic corridors with barely anything worth a mention.
Surprisingly based. Sure you've got stuff like Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade Chronicles and modern Assassin's Creed, but Yo-kai Watch manages to consistently pull off a super comfy and extremely convincing atmosphere. It helps that the world is so close to our own, but you really feel like you're immersed in it.
Literal retard
MP1 Remake would be based only if they keep the comic panel cut scenes
Name me a game that's atmospheric but also lighthearted and doesn't try to be dark.
sm64
AC Black Flag. Yeah you're a pirate doing piratey shit all game and having a good time but it really nails the feel of the Caribbean and the freedom that existed in that part of the world.
It's not a coincidence that a lot of people considered it the last good Asscreed game
>tfw no PC port
1 > 2 btw
Stalker SoC
The Uncharted series
Yeah it sucks that it STILL hasn't been ported when weird as fuck titles have been. I'd agree 1 is better as well for the most part but the gameplay in 2 is leaps and bounds better.
Shit that takes me back MDK was criminally underrated. Crazy as fuck space action game with surprising humor
probably or OOT, or MM, or VtM:B
Felt like the movies
>that Nostromo DLC was kino as fuck
That looks like a christmas map from GunZ The Duel
idk if I should pirate or buy that game
Super Metroid
Thief
Thief II
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat
Any of those.
downtown hollywood.

Pathologic and Pathologic 2 are the runners-up.
I know a lot of people on v pretend to hate games they never played, however Heavy Rain nailed down the plot and feel it was trying to give off. Even when you go out of your way to make shit worse, it never strays far from a specific feel.
Listening to shanties while sailing off towards the horizon was one of the most comforting feelings I've got out of a video game in a long time.
>No one has said it
Ghost Trick
Pretty much every late 90s early 2000 3d game (especially the ones where the story take place during the night), for some reason I find them to have much better atmosphere than modern games, maybe the lack of overused post processing is the reason? In any case nothing beats system shock 2
MGS3
SOTC
FFX
Persona 5.
Some of the themes are dark and it definitely has some edgy moments. But the game oozes style and atmosphere like no other and its mostly just about high school hijinx and soul monsters.
It's the only "movie game" I can think of that's actually a good movie.
DEFCON
The sound design for the self-destruct sequence in Nostromo amazes me everytime I replay. Best part of the game was reaching this absolute nightmare and being paranoid of your every step. Goosebumps man. I hate the fact I'll never be able to play this for the first time ever again.
the ace combat series
>The sound design
I remember plugging my headphones into my controller just so I could play it without waking anyone up.
I was not expecting that fucking sound quality.
I pity anyone that didn't play that with headphones.
Was streaming this when it came out. Was super into the game. Hit this part, and literally nope'd the fuck out for a week. I was so on edge, by that point.
I don't disagree, yet I also find this opinion a bit off from the norm. Normally people praise the photorealism of the old masters and eschew that sort of creativity.
How's the PC port for this?
I had it on PS4 but someone stole my copy
Excellent answer.
Man that game has one of the best soundtracks in all of vidya in my opinion.
I can hear this webm.
Not the most atmospheric but 3rd Birthday was spooky to me even though it's an action game.
any of the Metro games
Jet Set Radio [Future]
Theres no way you didnt groove to at least one of the songs
never played, is that a canon tummy?
How was Inside? Still haven't played it but Limbo is my favorite game of all time when it comes to atmosphere.
imagine the smell haha she must be pretty stinky huh haha
pretty good actually. if you liked limbo you'll probably like this.
avoid spoilers though, and try and leave the thread immediately.
this fucking part
For me, it's Metroid Prime. The feeling of isolation on an alien world is with you every step of the game.
>still no PC port
unreal engine?
ut99
does james carry a collapsed sun instead of a flashlight in this version?
It's ok not great but not terrible rather basic graphics options but never had it crash or act oddly.
>we will never get a Darkness 2*
>music
>nuclear winter
>snow slowly building up on your buildings
>rising pollution
>global time limit until the end of the world
>watching your resource production collecting money
>comfy as fuck
Good answer user. I'd also say Kingdom Come Deliverance.
First played it back when it got that Wii trilogy package. What a magical experience that was.
I thought that bit was boring honestly.
Anyone played this? It was pretty fucked up if you're late coming back home and see the mucous trails your mutating gf left behind because she'd rather crawl and hide in the basement so she doesn't see the disgust the man she loves has for her.
This is the obvious answer
youtu.be
it's his wife and daughter crying
>present day
>two days ago
Well which one is it?
2 nights ago, the day when you get presents.
This game creeps you the fuck out with the initial premise and Cynthia dying. Too bad it becomes a big joke with monkey men, burping nurses and stock sounds. Still the scene where you find Walter's dead body rotting behind a wall in your apartment the entire time always gets to me. The thought of a rotting corpse being close to your bedroom creeps me the fuck out.
ITS PAYNE
ditto
Demon's Souls
Rough, you need to use a frame limiter to keep the game from crashing and bugging out, on some machines it also runs at 15fps in fullscreen mode as well so you need to run the game windowed and force borderless through another app to get it working, the gameplay with M+K is fine though.
TEW2 has a good PC port.
>polshit
I had Max Payne 3 in my steam collection and never played it but after my best friend died I decided to remove it from my library.
This song is not helping me change my mind.
uh ok
Max Payne 1 and 2 had some fine ass photo textures
Unironcially this
Cage's/Quantic Dreams strong point is nailing atmosphere and world design
I love MP2's look, the combination of baked lighting and grainy photo-textures just looks so appealing, much better than real-time lighting and PBR in modern games even though it's much less accurate.
I really wish indie games would adopt this aesthetic because it looks and runs great.
I released my finger from the Payne residence, but it was all right.
what's this from? looks kino
not sure if bait, but silent hill 2's first area, the bluecreek apartments. play it if you haven't.
It wasn't bait. Thanks. I have SH1 on Mednafen at the moment and have been wanting to play it for a few weeks so I'll start tonight.
RE4 HD uses the same art style (in a restorative way) and the autism is taking them forever, but the result is pretty nice, though not low resolution.
Shadow of Chernobyl
King's Field (1994)
Lament of Innocence
Dead Space 1
Lost Planet 1 in some sections or with music disabled
Still Life has a very Fahrenheit atmosphere
Silent Hill 2
Deus Ex
Bonus: David Cage games are fairly atmospheric
>plug headphone into controller
>compressed bluetooth audio 32000 KHZ
>quality
at least in germany this game wasnt underrated at all
probably a razer headset as well kek
Baked lighting is raytraced lighting so it's more accurate than real-time lighting, it's just not dynamic. Real-time raytracing will bring back these aesthetics soon enough.
Majora's Mask
Hitman Contracts
Shadow of Chernobyl
REmake
both Thiefs
Bloodborne
Silent Hill series
Right, but the photo-textures already have environmental lighting in them that will clash with baked lighting, for example if you photoreferenced a brick wall and used it all over the place you'd have shadows between the bricks in the texture that won't line up with the light sources you add later.
wish this was on steam
silent hill series
stalker series
mgs 3
ico and sotc
dark souls
My very personal pick.
Unironically the most atmospheric vania after Metroid.
ive wanted to play this for a long time but never got around it. looks interesting
OY YOU
*9mm and 12 Gauge spam ensues*
ah yes, downloadfile-2 a true classic
Fragile Dreams. Incredibly beautiful and melancholic. Shame the combat sucks.
Silent Hill 1-4
Resident Evil Remake
STALKER trilogy
Zelda:OoT-MM + BotW
Okami
What game?
INFRA
Rain World
System Shock 2
S.N.E.A.K.E.R.: Ringtone of Limansk
This is it
Really? Don't remember this location.
It probably looks off because of the upward angle on a hill providing no identifyable backdrop, but the building is Zulu's tower in the Yanov section of CoP
Hitman Contracts
Good game.
Silent Hill 2 without a doubt. Honorable mention to Bioshock but it's absolutely not close.
Rockstar's games suck dick. Max Payne is all about precise, snappy movement and shooting. Does that sound like anything R's made in the last fifteen years?
Love this game with all my heart. It was scaring the shit out of me until the age of 15 (then SH3 took its place).
myst riven
Silent Hill, P.T., Hollow Knight, Abzu, and for some reason I want to say Tomb Raider but I think it was just the lack of music and length of levels that could get you absorbed at the time
Silent Hill on the PS1 with a CTR, Windwaker or Crystal Chronicles on the Gamecube with a CTR, or MGS2/MGS3 on a CTR.
Checque, please.
*spooky villa noises*
this
stalker is so good
also Pathologic (the first game) is amazing for creating this unrelenting oppressive atmosphere that you won't find in any other game
Because people mentioned other SH games, I gonna point out Shattered Memories. Something being trapped at night in snow storm while melancholic music plays in the background is peak comfy.
youtube.com
some parts of the mass effect games have some atmospheric lighting like the afterlife club in me2.
myniggger
forgot link:
Despite being an MMO, The Secret World was very atmospheric. Solomon Island and Tokyo were especially good.
You are Empty
G-string
Cryostasis
Darkwood
Condemned:Criminal Origins
>Observer
Penumbra:Overture
35MM
he's not entirely wrong
The Division.
Splinter cell 3 and 4.
1 and 2 are good games, probably better than 4, but less atmospheric.
Bully on the PS2
>Activate Windows
ffs user, its not that hard to fix
good taste user
Yeah I fixed that shit
Mafia
This desu. I find the autistic loading screens extremely charming.
This screenshot reminds me, how did the alien make a hive and eggs if they had no queen? Were they lowkey retconning Aliens and confirming that one deleted scene from Alien as canon?
from newer games, i thought mankind divided had a very well constructed world.
reminds me of the thing. looks pretty comfy tbqh
what game?
Thinking on it, I'd actually say Max Payne 2. There's some really great games with great atmosphere, but MP2 absolutely overwhelmed. The characters, soundtrack, and environment were so vivid that it's blown out every other game to cross my mind. Remedy did an insanely good job with that series.
I think my runner up would be a tie between The Darkness and Alan Wake.
Marrow
U N R E A L
man you could drink your fill of that games atmosphere, same with SH3 of course
Looks pretty nice
Mass Effect 2, especially Bekenstein
For me, it's ALAN WAKE
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Imagine going from making one of the best third-person shooters of all time to making flavor of the week bargain bin junk.
Ragnarok was kino.
>I have tasted the flesh of fallen angels!
more specifically BBI
Japanese games from the PS1/PS2 era with horror elements are the best for atmosphere.
>Silent Hill
>Resident Evil
>D
>Dino Crisis
>Parasite Eve
>Clock Tower
>Siren
>Rule of Rose
>Haunting Ground
>Onimusha
>Devil May Cry 1
I need to take some screenshots in dead space 2. Unitology church was spooky.
Probably because it was bundled with pretty much every graphics card that could run it for some reason.
Ill take the bun top next to pajeet and uhhhhh goth-lite on the far right and an in the middle black sweat, togo please
what game is this? looks sick
How is the steam version?
>that gun in the bottom left
What the fuck?
Metal Gear Solid on PS1.
it's alright, check the steam discussions for fixes on possible problems you might encounter.
STALKER.
>What a magical experience that was
I mean, the menu music itself already set the tone for all 3 games in the exact way you'd expect it to.
youtube.com
God I really hope they don't screw up Metroid Prime 4. That and STALKER 2. Those two series have a pretty much perfect track record for me and I don't want to see them tarnished because someone wanted to make a couple of extra bucks.
yes sir
have all the people who made mass effect 2 left bioware?
Yes. Some even opened their own studio
>Some even opened their own studio
whats it called? i wonder what theyre working on.
interesting. shame its turn based combat though. ive always preferred more action based combat in rpgs.
For me personally it's KotOR II.
WHACK EM
Pathologic so bleak and oppressive it makes Stalker look like a happy fun time.
Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill Shattered Memories
dark earth
whyd u leave out fatal frame?
The original MGS was dripping with atmosphere, it was something the later games could never pull off quite as well
goddamn I loved baked lighting It made every game 10x more atmospheric
fuck real time lighting
I don't recall that game having atmosphere at all. Unless you think a puzzle where you drawn a line through a maze on paper has atmosphere.
Peace Walker had atmosphere but it was laid-back comfy atmosphere like a sitcom, not at all the same as MGS1 but of all the games MGS1 and Peace Walker stand out to me as having the most vibrant sense of tone.

Nah
Back then i was excited to see what videogays would become...
Might play this today actually
What's this?
That just makes me want a new jak :(
>man I'm really into this pirate game this is actually quite good I wonder what will happ-
>POV office worker game out of nowhere
Haven't played another assassin game because of this.
Never heard of You are Empty before. Looks interesting, thanks.
Everything valve ever touched
the Half-Life and Portal universes had a really present creepy undertone/existential atmosphere to them, and I don't know what in particular created that effect. Even weirder was when I got that vibe again from reading Laidlaw's Episode 3 outline.
I Absolutely love Painkiller so I was super hyped when this was announced but alas, never ever
you guys are funny, guys. even more funny if anyone believes your shit, hahaha
Empty Counter Strike: Source maps
>What is the most atmospheric game of all time?
1. vtmb
2. stalker soc
they really have something very weird about them that I've seen nobody really replicate.
Maybe there's this constant feeling that there's something a lot bigger going on and you get glimpses and hints of it but never actually get an answer, like how you can see just barely the skyline of the combine overworld or how aperture looks like it's fucking endless and even after 2, you've seen but a fraction of it.
I don't know, It's fucking magic, it ain't explaining itself.
I just wish they did it again because it makes me feel like a kid again.
i played the shit out of that game
Atmospheric in terms of art design? Probably DEHR.
I got Inside during epic's free week. So excited to play it, but when it launces, it just sits in the taskbar doing nothing. Can't alt tab to it or open it any other way.
Anyone have a fix?
I actually did forget because I hate nu-valve so much. Also HL1 was better.
Metroid Prime 2
Demon's Souls, I could listen to the Nexus all day long, it's extremely meditative.
Hard Reset.
I loved grenade jumping onto the tops of maps and going out of bounds in CE.
Doing couch co-op with a friend to bypass bits of AOTCR was terrific, too.
Exactly this
i lose so many hours on this game's world
same with skyrim but the problem was the shitty textures up close
SHAAAAAUN
That's cool af. Pretty hyped for the PC version now
The music man, it brought it all together.
There will be a day when nobody left alive remembers this.
Exactly, love this OST from ME.
>Western games
>Atmosphere

This.
The music, bleak colors, darkness, snow and sound design were pure atmosphere.

The good trolls are always not entirely wrong.

Stalker alpha builds
euro truck 2.
Always thought the original Spyro had a great atmosphere, with that airy, dreamlike feel.
The trailer for this game traumatised me as a kid and I still havent grown the balls to play it
I finished the first three games but 4 really bothers me
>drop the sails and get ready to hit the open seas
>"give us a song lads!"
>"I dreamed a dream the other night..."
If they took out the gay assassins and irlshit to focus on the pirate parts I'd still be playing it now.
good, idiots shouldn't be allowed
Play Silent Hill 2, you mong. Just don't do the HD releases they did a few years ago.
noice
I actually remember being seriously spooked at this trailer and barely being able to watch it as a teenager.
fuck yeah. I'm just gonna dump a bunch of screenshots.
I've never played it, what's with the loading screens?
legit in my top 5 of all time but Alien is my fave movie so im bias
Valve games really captured the late 90s-early 2000s atmosphere more than most
Why the FUCK is the gritty underbelly of New York so underused in videogames
sploiler
Unironically Control
Amnesia. The first one, not the dogshit pile that is the sequel.
Nobody ever mentions The Saboteur in these threads.
Maybe because nobody's played The Saboteur.
Shame the game itself is mediocre.
Darkwood
Dead Space 1 and 2 never made me feel like any point was a chapter but that there were other rooms and shit on the other side of walls I can't access.
truly a shame
I can honestly only play that shit for about 30 mins before I have to quit
I played the Steam port a few years ago. I had no idea what to expect.
Absolutely incredible. Took me a while to get accustomed to the FUCKED controls but everything else was just pure art.
what are you talking about? Here's a short list:
>deus ex 1
>GTA 1, 2, 3, LCS and IV
>true crime NYC
>prototype 1 and 2
>THUG1
>Turning Point: Fall of Liberty
>VtMQ:R
probably Arx Fatalis, it barely has music, just an atmospheric ambience
I wish Arkane weren't being wrung dry by bethesda, I want a sequel
don't forget about Mafia 1
Duskers for that "your life depends on old unreliable tech" feel.
+ Kingpin and Condemned and max payne
what got you into quitting it?
Not him, but shit's intense. It's '30 minutes at a time' type of game.
Ocarina of Time pic almost related
This is maybe OT, but I remember playing HL1 when I was a child for a few days, because I was stuck in the initial section, I didn't even know that I had to get the Suit. More than a decade after I replayed this game and I finished it. It's weird how the Half Life 1 I played when I was little, without monsters, only walking in that small part of Black Mesa- in my mind feels like a completely different game, that somewhat influenced me. Anyway, Portal and Half Life have something magic inside them, for some aspects they're subliminal mastepieces
I feel you. the ambient sounds and effects can really get to you at times, especially during nightime.
the soundtrack is absolute kino
>gook runes all over the screen
>atmosphere
okay
The first couple of chapters of Fahrenheit were really good at this. Shame the game went full retard later.
youtube.com
Also, Stalker SoC and CoP.
Obviously Quake 1 you plebs
Every room in SH2 is memorable and unique. It's incredible.
Darkseed
those are jap runes
gook ones have a lot of circles
got a laugh out of me regardless
>G-string
wow, I very rarely fing this thing mentioned anywhere on v
Unironically, it's SH: Shattered Memories
Everything else is pretty much shit-tier
Why do people hate Max Payne 2 again?
I always liked the atmosphere of GTA III.
Eternal Darkness.
Ecstatica
Boku no Natsuyasumi
Play Stalker.
Fuck off back to /vg/ stalkertards yeah yeah it looks pretty at times when it's not being absolute jank.
>Turning Point: Fall of Liberty
Only games he'd actually want to play count for such a list.
>tfw bought it recently after replaying 2 and otr
>its shit

having more fun with 3 right now
This, somewhat cyberpunk
It's too dark and grey in III, as we all saw on a certain September day, there can be very beautiful weather in New York with a clear blue sky. So why is it so often portrayed as this dark, grey place?
because it actually rains almost 1/3 of the year there on average
one time I spent 5 hours looking for secrets in ad_swampy
I would love to play this but I can't stand vampires.
I think the game dipped too much into the area of the whimsical when the first game had a proper balance. Also the bullet time sucks and the bullet time reload animation is retarded.
Because it's too obscure, even by nerd standarts.
We are willing to suffer
I gotta replay it this fall.
Just don't expect much from other aspects, it's only worth for atmosphere and soviet grim aesthetics. And also launching it, is another chunk of problems.
And don't tell that i don't warned you.
Abzu.
Still better than Serious Sam 3 or Nu-Shadow Warriors.
Silent Hill series, but special mention to 3 because it did "the urban enviroments gone wrong" better than the others, at least in my opinion.
Also, Mother 3 and Pic related. The John Carpenter-like OST is perfect.
Dragons Dogma
STALKER
>wind's howling
2 was a dissapointment and they shouldn't even have tried for 3 before re-doing 2 and getting it right.
You didn't shoot those mercs, did you?
MP3 was not bad in shootings
I shoot everything that I deem hostile.
When in doubt, shoot them. If they return fire - I was right. If they don't - they are dead anyway so let bygones be bygones.
TLD might be the ultimate winter game.
>John Carpenter-like OST
nigga you just sold me on this game. is there a pc version? is it a good port?
I haven't played it in years, but even back then it was janky as fuck. I do remember playing on PS2 and the director was egging me on through the headset
is that the face you make when you wanna lean to another person in a conversation and say "tell us how you really feel..." sarcastically but that other person doesn't exist.
it would be if they didn't take years to update the fucking thing
Absolute kino
The first Division. Seriously, that world building is great.
I mean that part is irrelevant imo. The game was the tits when I first played in in 2014, it's even better now.
just pirate it nigga
worked fine for me. played like 35 hours on pc
Warhammer 40k: Fire Warrior
An actual descent into hell.
Metal Gear Solid and MGS2 and 3. And Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3.
Out of those MGS1 is the most atmospheric.
DayZ Mod was always intense
>Turning Point: Fall of Liberty
Holy shit, throwback.
I remember this game being so controversial for some reason, but nobody played it so it was all for nothing.
You posted it; Max Payne's art design is fantastic.
darkwood
HAHAHAA sure buddy
Why were GTA SA's forests so damn creepy? I've been replaying the game and it's still unnerving to walk around at night.
TrackMania 2. Racing games have some of the best eye-candy you can find.
best game ever.
so you never played it i guess
Poor graphics means everything looks slightly off, and when everything is slightly off and in the middle of nowhere, that's horror.
The myths and legends surrounding the place helped a ton, too. Man, GTA:SA was truly once in a lifetime.
The atmosphere in Siren was impeccable.
youtu.be
Alan Wake did atmosphere and world design incredibly. You could always see where you were going in the distance, just vaguely enough to sell the idea that the world was real.
Honestly, the atmosphere for most of the game wasn't fantastic, but there's special about this place.
youtube.com
> present day
> two nights ago
Excuse me?
Anyway Silent Hill 2 gets my vote, honorable mentions include MGS1, Thief 1 & 2, System Shock 2 and Amnesia.
The PC version is fine, though I remember some differences in the controls from the ps2 version. Nothing significant anyway.
Be warned, though, that as said, it can get really janky sometimes. There is a part I remember where you need to maneuver a crane that really got on my nerves, but the overall experience is worth it.
youtube.com
Duskers is such an atmospheric game. Play it with headphones in the dark - just a stellar experience. I wish Objects in Space was better. Some of the nuggets in it are fantastic, but it's such an inconsistent mess.
Pay better attention in school
Design work was really, really good in this game. Screenshots come out quite well when playing at a higher resolution, just ignore the skyboxes lol
Did the update to Anomaly ever get released?
>The only way to use alterante skins was doing the time trials
>There was no way to play the whole game with the remade Max Payne 1 model
Hell of a loss if you ask me
I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE
JUST HEAR THE BEAT OF MY HART
*rhythm god-damnit
ESL friends: "present day" is often used to demarcate that something is taking place close to the present. It never means "today exactly." So when you say "present day New York," you mean to place your story close to the present, whenever it is the audience is watching it.
maan, i wish we had straight forward gta game that doesn't try to be a fucking HBO series. I played III after beating EFLC and before V. So I'm saying this with no nostalgia glasses on.
Not really sure what you mean here. Care to explain?
That's not using Anomaly.
Ive seen mods that swap out Max for Undyne, seems like someone could do the same for 3.
1.5 was released last month.
Still better than the standalone game imo
>i'll be back in a second
>5 seconds later
Just protagonist trying to make it in criminal world of the city without some relative characters who bugging them down. Like Sweet in SA with his "It's for the hood" or Trevor/Michael, Franklin/Lamar hearing for 20th time their disputes was real tiresome. And by HBO series I meant that Sopranos really smeared all over IV and especially V with Michael dysfunctional family dramedy kino.
agreed
No mention of Dying Light? This game is extremely atmospheric - You even get a sense of comfy, despite the zombie apocalypse setting...
The atmosphere is one thing that Uncharted did great, but considering you've probably never played the games I wouldn't expect you to know that
Based ESL.
>atmospheric
Is this just a stupid way to say soulful?

A personal favorite. Plus the usual ones what were mentioned itt. I'll also add the Gothic games in case they weren't mentioned.

Also a good call.
GTA Liberty City Stories.
this right here. i am such a bitch i only got to the first time the alien showed up. i was too scared to keep playing after that point.
I don't know what it is, bros, but I just love Resident Evil 5 and Far Cry 2, especially Far Cry 2. There's something so satisfying about blasting the enemies in the face, hosing them down with a flamethrower and hearing them scream, or just charging up on them with a machete.
I don't know what it is, they're just two amazingly fun games with great atmosphere.
fuck off marketing team. I dont believe you. I played quantum break and it felt like a soulless movie
>all from toluca prison
Name a better level
>Resident Evil 5
I hate the sterile, uninspired look of this game. Also the whole game is shit holy damn what a downgrade.
theres a pc port of 1 and 2 for what i remember.
i remember the first game getting really fucking hard near the end too.
Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2
Kenshi
Shadow of the Colossus
I actually enjoy """movie games""" like Uncharted, Last of Us, MGS, etc (even some telltale games) but Heavy Rain did nothing for me.
There are some merits to it, like that there actually is a fair amount of story branching, but there is a constant permeating sense of cheesiness and inauthenticity to it. In the games I mentioned above, there is a strong emphasis on doing things at your own pace- you can just hang back and enjoy the view, or explore around for secrets and details, but in Heavy Rain you're always moving from one scene to the next. It never manages to build a sense of a real world, everyone just feels like a puppet on a flimsy stage doing a bad melodramatic play. Ironically, the best part of the game is the totally unrealistic FBI guy with his Twin Peaks autism and VR glasses.
Really shows the difference in presentation and production value that studios like Naughty Dog manage to achieve, and I'm not gonna say that the story alone is groundbreaking or anything, but the way it's implemented within the games is truly unique.

This game really got those Assault on precinct 13/The warriors/Halloween vibes all over it.
Feels like love letter to those movies.
it is Stalker or Metro?
comfy
what mods?
Fahrenheit was literally snow level: the game
The only vania game that ever mattered
But that isn't unmodded Q1.
looks like Metro
It succeeds solely on its atmospheric visual design.
Darkwood is already one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played, and I'm a horror connoisseur. I seem to play it in short sessions though, not necessarily because the atmosphere gets to me but because the survival aspect stresses me out more than anything.
The jank is part of the charm user.
not all time but recently? KCD
i miss the old max payne
kek
>tfw Jak and Daxter reboot for PS5 and PC
Straight from the go max payne
easily this
dead space 1 and 2 are trash and frankly you have to be a 10yo child to think they are scary
what game
Top down view really kills it for me, I see so much artistry and potential though, I'd kill to see them make a 3D game
i liked the PoPWW atmosphere
based
Post apocalyptic world war?
Go dayum that game was good. Played on my 360.
neverever
Far Cry 2 got so much shit when it came out but playing through it again its really fucking kino and probably the best Far Cry game
Should I reinstall it?
It's Stalker. Metro has far more detail when you have face masks on, also no environments or storms like that in Metro. That's also a heavily modded Stalker.
My nigger. Far Cry 2 is one of the best games of all time. I say that wholeheartedly, and sincerely. It's fucking brilliant, the best in the series and is lamentably misunderstood. Inb4 checkpoints.
Modded Stalker.
Just force yourself to get used to it user, it's an amazing game and the top down view actually enhances the horror aspect in similar ways to the way fixed camera angles do in other classic horror games. The game is superbly designed and the art and especially sound design is some of the best I've seen in the genre.
Walking the snowy streets at night was great.
Second game didn't manage to capture that feel.
why PS2? PC has more content
i know there's a ps2 texture mod, but isnt there a ps2 lighting mod like there is for all the GTAs?
prince of persia warrior within
NOLF2 was so ahead of its time, visually speaking. Still looks good today.
the beta of HL2 looked so damn good, fuck what anyone says. Much moodier and darker atmosphere than the happy go lucky adventure of retail
Deserts of Kharak was very atmospheric.
i fucking love this game
prison > hotel > hospital > apartments
Unfortunately this. As much as I love gameplay loop with better shooting in div2, New York is just too good. Just recently went back and just wanted to walk around. Those few first minute had more magic that entire of second game.
best walking simulator out there
Torment the good one
youtu.be
Tell me user. How to enjoy this game? I find kinda boring just looking at the "loading" screens while jumping to start to star.
Peak 90's cozy atmosphere.
i actually wish it was a real noir game, but the fucking noir shit goes away when u conquer territory, its awful. plus the game is just fucking goofy
you dont
its boring af as you said
but its cool sometimes like these
This game is great, no idea why everyone here shits on it + very good OST
AoM is really good too
God damnit. After 35 hours I just couldn't take more. Maybe will try again when I get vr in the future. Some moments were quite comfy, can't lie.

Really digging deep here, help me out bois
The Witcher 3.
The world isn't exactly deep, in that there's not really a lot of ways to interact with it, but god damn it just sucks you right in. One of the only games so atmospheric that I just walk everywhere. Not fast travel, not sprinting or running like a spaz, just straight up walking. Even riding the horse between towns or sailing a boat between islands I just go everywhere at a normal pace and enjoy the absolute comfiness of it all.
It really makes me wish there was a game where you just play as some no-name witcher trying to make their way in the world, with no huge world-shaking plot or missing daughter hanging over your head. Traveling around, camping at night, actually tracking down monsters without Batman vision.
ED hits so many right notes for me for atmosphere but then it all comes down to "truck simulator: space edition"
i like W3 too m8
reminds me of annoying RC missions
We need a rpg when you’re not the chosen one.
In W3 every witcher you meet in the game is way more interesting than gerald
And sunny beach levels too
>enlarge the picture
>"winds howling"
>check the reply
It's problem in so many games, even shitty ones like FO4.
>I GOTTA FIND MY KIDNAPPED INFANT SON
>What, build a whole town with you? Sure man I'm not busy...
Doing anything other than chasing the main plot makes no sense. Same with W3. Why would I spend any time fucking around playing gwent and doing random odd jobs when I should be tracking down my missing daughter who I know is being chased by a bunch of evil space elf niggers that want to take over the world? It seems kind of fucking urgent.
wait, was that scene in isolation? its some flashback or recording right?
Resident Evil remake
Silent Hill 1-4 do the whole atmosphere thing a lot better than SM does
SH always was way better than RE but somehow one of the is dead while the other one is still making games nowadays. why this happened?
underrated
What's this?
I love how Control is bringing back the comfy weird atmosphere of old Remedy. Quantum Break was such a fucking boring game in every single aspect.
looks like some hl2 horror mod
finally someone mentioning gothic. There is no game that is more atmospheric. The colony at night with KaiRo's music...ahh there is nothing better
What? isn't it FEAR?
>cry of fear
mein negger
it's Nightmare House 2
fear
That's what I thought, too. But apparently it's some HL2 mod called Nightmare House 2.
probably this one
Yeah. Pretty similar down to the scary girl in the end.
Portal 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild
Nigga playing confused Fear with Tony Hawk...
What can I say, bros? That first time you hear the music when you enter the city, it's magic
According to an interview with one of the devs, there was a queen, you just never ran into it in the game as they were trying to make invoke the feeling of the original movie and not the sequel.
