Isn't effect spread kinda shit? Your legion is basically never not out unless you wanted to do perfect calls for some reason. The game feeds you energy to keep them out constantly.

It's decent enough with auto-heal and maybe parry, but for the most part, yeah. I mainly had it on for gene codes

The game works differently, it's like Nier where your attacks don't hitstun enemies so there aren't really "combos"
it works better in the context of how the game is played anyway, it's actually fairly deep and there's a lot of cool shit
It also certainly has the platinum polish, lots of cool little details and other shit, lots of stuff to do. The game also looks fucking amazing for a switch game and puts everything else on the console to shame

HOW THE FUCK are you supposed to get through the cringe cut scenes? they're so bad & more than half the game is downtime.

It's almost as bad as nier. very slow, lacking in variety & there's a lot of scripted events interrupting battles.

Case 4 in Harmony Square behind a hologram wall.

After the cutscene plays go up to the next landing. You'll have a door up some stairs in front of you and one on your left. Go left, slice the door open with your sword legion, take a left and then activate the terminal to lower the bridge. Then you'll need to ride your beast legion to push through the current created by an enemy and use one of your floating legions to chain bind Alan.

It's very different. It's much more of an action RPG, you do a lot of future cop stuff in between combat. The combat itself is very good, much better than Taura's previous game, but it's also quite unique.

It's not platinum standard combat, and its visuals can be very noisy and difficult to discern, and overall it's very unfocused.

It also has a super slow start and doesn't even really try to explain its combat. It being a plat game and almost feeling like one, when it's nothing at all like other plat games, really works against it in terms of teaching the player.

Holy shit File 2's fight against all of the legions is ridiculous on Pt Ultimate. What the fuck, axe nemesis does like 700 damage. Had to pop pills like an inner city junkie to get through that.

Case 3 (NOT 2): There's a heavy chest plate in an optional Astral Plain's gate after defeating the area's boss, the chest should be to the right as you enter the boss area..

Case 3: Hidden holo-mask salesman behind a holographic wall in one of the apartment complexes near the alley you start in. Skull and Hermit holo-masks can be bought there.

Case 4: After acquiring the Arm legion after the boss fight, move back to the staircase room and chain jump across to a gate that can be lifted with Arm Legion, the goggles are in a chest.

Case 4: In Harmony Square near a burger joint there is a hologram wall that leads to a hermit mask salesman. Hermit faceguard and Vendor-0 faceguard can be bought.

Case 5: At the Aegis Institute you can find bandages for your eyes in one of the medical rooms behind Akira's.

Case 6: A cardboard box hat is under a staircase in the area you are tracking Douglas with the Beast Legion.

Case 7: Square Glasses B can be found in the room where you have to rescue Richard and Alan. Look for a short staircase and hug the wall behind it to find the glasses.

Case 7: Cat holo-mask on the pipes in the area where you have to save Alan and Richard.

There's a headset down a tunnel near where the homunculus attacks (look for 4 gates inside, then you know its the right tunnel.)

The civilian mask is found in the Blue Case to hunt down the elemental, same area where you rescued an unknown police man by laying him down on an automated stretcher, inspect the red gash in the ground to start the case and find it in the optional astral plane it leads you to.

To get the officers mask, head to the car park that houses the elevator that leads to the homunculus boss fight, DON'T GO UP THE ELEVATOR but instead search around until you find a garage door that the Arm Legion can lift, past this is a boss fight that after won you can use your Axe Legion to break through a barrier near there to get the police helmet inside a chest.

Case 8: help Billy (the guy with the sunglasses) take down a terrorist plot and earn a pair of sunglasses of your own.

Misc Rewards: the skin tight body suit the suit your sis wears while in her coma is unlocked by giving the toilet fairy Bel all 12 toilet papers from visiting all the toilets in the game.
The casual outfit is automatically aquired at the start of chapter 10.
The Lappy suit is acquired from collecting all special Lappy items, 6 in all.

Just buy one, yuzu will be stuck trying to perfect Odyssey for all eternity.

By the time this game is playable on an emulator with a $900 computer, a new console's going to have come out with a sequel or possibly an enhanced re-release.

the goggles one is incorrect, it's a little below the arm legion area, simply going across to the first gate you see will take you to teh next area of the level, also in case 4 there's a knit beanie at the top of the pillars the stairs spiral around, little glowy spot you need to shoot with arrow

Just get regular. I can count on one hand how many times I have used my switch for the handheld mode. Even then it is hella cool to just kickstand it up and use the joy cons and not have to hold the thing.

Just doing the first file and I've gotten D on the protecting 3 civilizians part and fighting the giant chimera solo. How do I git gud? No idea why I got D protecting civilizians, I took little damage and killed as fast as I could. Giant boss was kinda bs, so much dmg and follow up dmg I couldn't dodge. Dodge in general seems wasteful when they do a follow up you don't know is coming or hits you anyway.

I though in order to get S ranks you had to avoid taking damage and losing your legion and shit.

Glad they were lenient on S ranks cause usually S ranks on Platinum games are tough as fuck to get and require high points, speed, and 0 damage.

You don't have to, but you get a massive point bonus for not taking damage

Pretty sure in file 11 or 12, I got over 10k but still got an A rank as I remember seeing someone say this earlier. Every other time it had been S rank at over 10k though, so not sure what happened.

it's normal to get Ds during the first 3 chapters because good ranks are obtained by using lots of different mechanics and you basically have nothing to work with at this point

once you start getting multiple legions and understanding things like perfect calls or hit rush you can mix things up and the combat becomes far more rewarding

also upgrade your weapon and your legions skill trees

While speed is super important, you want to switch Legions often, use their skills (even the buff ones), use sync attacks, and get a Perfect Call or two. That's been my experience so far with getting S+ ranks.

Do a black jacket with white undershirt and shorts. That way from the side profile you showed it would look like the car. Plus it is tacticool and practical to have an outer layer that is darker that won’t be messed up if it gets dirty from rolling around.

technically you do have to avoid damage as its time wasted trying to do damage and you get a bonus but you can still S+ even if you lose all your batteries

Okay, after playing around a bunch in training, I sort of found something. Perfect dodge sync attack with Arrow Legion does retarded amounts of damage on these guys, 10x as much as anything else. Especially if you can dodge behind them and get a crit. But only perfect dodge sync, perfect call attacks suck against them, especially Sword because they break out of chain so fast they'll actually punish you for daring to hit them.

Also this is by far the least fun enemy type in the entire game, holy shit.

You only get a great sword, the game expects you to use all three in tandem with you Legions. And after that, near the end of the game, you get to BEAST OUT!!! But it's kinda disappointing because it only lasts for a short period of time and takes FOREVER to build the meter back up to use it again, unless you're willing to shell out a bunch of money on a drink that maxes it out that you can only carry one of.

I don't always want to sync though. Like if you're in a multi hit attack and dodge with sword or axe you're gonna get hit if you sync since only the 2nd hit they do gives i frames.

Man I like Astral Chain but Platinum really has to come up with a new combat system rather than a modified Metal Gear Rising one. They've been using this shit for a million games now.

You unlock additional combos and sync attacks for your weapons and Legions as you level them up, coupled with perfect dodges, perfect calls, enemy chaining, chain jumps and Legion abilities, there's definitely more than enough depths to the combat, just don't judge the game based on File 1 and 2 combat.

At least there isn't a fucking witch time. I can't tell you how tired I am of action games using witch time.

At any time you can delay the input to do a different finisher
At any time you can hold the button to do a charge attack with a different finisher.
Each finisher triggers a sync attack that is different for each of the 5 Legions. so effectively there are 5 different finishers for each of the 3 types of combo. Then of course dodging or recovering just right will also trigger a sync attack that is different depending on the legion.

So it is not super advanced, but it is deep enough considering all you are having to track on screen and keep track of the cool downs on the Legion's special powers.

Those combos are for the 3 different weapons to, light melee, heavy melee, and range. So really it is about triggering what one of the finishers you want. 3 weapons, 5 finishers per weapon, that is 15 finishers, times 5 for each Legion and that is 75 finishers to choose from at any time? Buffs stay when switching legions without that move. That sync keep move is just to keep the legion stat bonus applied to you when legion is dismissed (blue hair mode, gains atk+def of legion).

I put auto-bind on my arrow, so I can use it to go for a multi-bind then use aim mode for headshot to get both those point bonuses.

Having legion out always puts those lines on your face and turns hair blue. Character customization is just hair style/color, skin color, and eye. You can find some costume parts and accessories, as well as unlock new colors for the legions, costumes, menu/HUD theme, etc.

Create one of the more complex and nuanced Plat games regarding gameplay, then have it take the backseat to running around solving fucking riddles and cleaning the streets of pop-rocks.

It's a different take on the genre given most games follow the same non-stop formula, but I'm glad. The game really goes out of its way to make you feel like a super cop just trying to do your job with your team and I love it. Plus there's 71 fucking post game missions, so I get the combat rush I want once I'm done with the story/investigations.

I'd say so. Clocked 30 hours into the campaign on normal difficulty, and the post game content seems great on top of trying to S+ platinum everything and get all the rewards from the in-game goals, which are sort of like general challenges.

The non-action segments were great for me, apart from chapter 8. My main complaint was the Astral Plane variety, it reminded me a lot of the shrines in BoTW. Interesting for the first half of the game, then it all got too samey. I'm surprised at how keen I am to keep going and replay it though, I jumped straight back into chapter 1 to look for hidden shit.

I took 25 hours for a full playthrough, doing most of the sidequests and talking to NPCs/exploring, except for one chapter that I rushed through. I'm going to try and beat it on the hardest difficulty and find all secrets, so for me I absolutely got my moneys worth. As others have said though, it's not a pure action game, so don't expect to be constantly bouncing between fights for the full game.

Just finished file 4. I still feel like there's not really any finesse to the combat. It seems like all I'm ever doing in combat is mash ZR, dodge occasionally, and press ZL when the screen flashes. I also don't understand what the point of switching legions in combat is: I assumed they would all play fairly differently, but they all seem to behave in combat pretty much the same.

Am I playing wrong?

It's a super cop game first and foremost. There's a fairly even divide between doing cop shit, platforming through dungeons, and the raw combat. It's definitely not 100% action oriented, but the post game offers up additional challenges to keep you hooked, which I think is great unless the cop aspects don't appeal to you at all.

One of my main complaints is that up until you get all legions the game feels more like a tutorial to get ready for the last fight unless you use your super duper ability you get near the end. Fighting the final boss like a normal fight took out everything of me and was the only time I needed to use all legions.

If the rest of the game was like what the game becomes after you get the last legion it would have been 10/10 for me.

Yeah, I think everybody expected hot minute after hot minute. But you gotta accept the game for what it is, and not what you want it to be. There's more depth than I thought it'd be there. Beginning of the game just feels like mindless button mashing because you start out so bare bones, later in the game it's like most stylish action games, where you have more options than you know what to do with so you just stick to your basic patterns.

Yep. The game isn't only combat after combat , it's full of other sidequests you have to do like puzzles and light detective bits. I think some side quests were getting a boy his balloon stuck in a tree, and returning a cat to her owner. Most are pretty easy, but some you only get one chance at so that makes them quite a pain. Sometimes its hard just to find all the side quests.

Obviously the aim of the game wasn't to be full of 100% combat, so they have you doing all these side quests in the world

Upgrade your Legions and X-Baton, start using Legion Skills and Command Skills, Legions do operate differently in combat and you should use their special modes with L more often. along with using your chain effectively.

They move way too damn quick. Most of the time I'm spent just caching up to where they were, not even getting close, then they disappear. The only one I killed appeared in some small doughnut island type thing, because it couldn't run I was able to defeat it.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they cut that because it's hard to make flying combat. Instead, they made the Arm legion float you inches above ground.

Slowed down time & shot it up full of arrows, it just disappeared like it wasn't even hurt. To tell the truth, until I killed one I wasn't even sure they could be killed. Thought they were some sort of "try to catch me" minigame for a long while.

Slimes are immune to ranged attacks like gun and Arrow. Immune to most skills and legion auto attacks too. ZL send out attack works, so does baton and Sword's Slash.

Story is a medicine anime plot executed well, there's moments of "oh shit there's a super secret reason for X that will be revealed later" but never gets brought up or explained, but the gameplay is a perfect mix of comfy and hype af. Controls amazingly and it's the best hack n slash I've played in years.

I feel the opposite, I think it's a good premise that was not well-executed. All of the characters were wooden and lacked any real motivation or was just poorly explained. The clones were a nice twist but they don't fully explore that concept other than "YOU'RE NOT ME" dialogue. Jena was also just a mystery since her motivations don't make a lick of sense, she never really explains how the astral plane can save humanity. The actions done to her were unjustified but it's more like a revenge plot rather than the benefit of mankind. Yoseph was really disappointing with that "it's all for humankind" bullshit actually amounted to nothing since it was revealed he just wanted to be a higher form of humanity.

I'm really annoyed by anyone who doesn't do anything manual with their legion.

Currently replaying the game for ranks and doing Pt Ultimate difficulty.
I like the game a lot, the combat is great, but the game absolutely tanks on replays because of all the side-content and non-combat stuff. That is fun the first time around, but it feels like a complete and utter slog to get through now on Pt Ultimate difficulty.

Archer Legion ending was so kino.

Protag struggling to keep Archer from killing Akira was so good, until File 12 shat all over that.

They'd probably feel a bit more alive if they could bounce off the player character more. Like when Akira catches up with you in File 10, and says "Why didn't you tell me you survived first?" It'd have been nice if our character had an actual choice to say something there.

I honestly think the Neuron team is one of the best aspects of the game since you seem them repeatedly pop up in quests, and they've always got your back. They're all pretty simple, but they're easily recognizable so it works. It's the MC that really comes off as off-kilter when there's a dozen moments for him/her to respond to the dead air. That, and the Neuron team completely zips out from the game once Raven's introduced, which sorta sucks.
