Story is pretty good, but it tries to talk about abstract concepts like love, forgivenes and determination in an almost fairy-tale like way. So zoomers have the pretend that it's automatically bad.

I don't really give a shit about Undertale but I'm happy for the guy.

Boss battles are fun, story was kind of shit and fall flat if you dislike the characters.

I played it and got the good ending, it's impressively well made in my opinion. The combat system and the music are famous at this point. The best part is how many different endings there are and how much your decisions, even small ones, really end up mattering. The game does a great job of making you feel bad about yourself. However, although I really liked the story for the most part. (actual spoiler) I really didn't care for the meta stuff. If the game acknowledges it's a game they should take a Deadpool direction and just see how far they can play with it, but combining the meta with this intense, lore-heavy story really didn't work in my opinion. Also I think the dino scientist would have worked better as a guy, I think it would have been more relatable.

What exactly makes Undertale a good game, anyway? I've always called Undertale a Visual Novel with tight but un-replayable gameplay. It's a pretty fun RPG, that's all.

Well you rarely think enemies in JRPG as actual characters(until they are bosses)
It empathizes that everyone in the game is a real character and a living creature. What you do with that information is your own decision. The game will throw jabs at you if you go through the genocide run, as you won't do that accidentally.
The players power to reset a world that has sentient creatures is a scary thought. The game even says that after clearing pacifist route and coming back.
Sadly some people feel like they are attacked for not playing "as the game wants". The characters in that game of course don't want you to kill them, but the decision if you do so or not is entirely up to you.
..:At least that is what I got out of it.

I mean mostly the rest of the game like how you can spare some bosses etc. Secret laboratory, you know. Some things just don't have the same impact if you watch them from Youtube rather than playing it yourself for the first time.
It's like watching any complete playthrough of any game. Yes, you can enjoy a game with good gameplay even after watching it from jewtube, but it isn't the same as encountering the mechanics, areas and music first time yourself.
I don't know how else to put it. In Undertale's case its so much about treating in-game characters as real living beings. You just lose something from the impact if you watch a pacifist run from Youtube without encountering the fights first yourself and having to think about it.

It's decent at worst, except for one moment of overly cheesy "power of friendship" writing in the good ending. That part is pretty bad, but at least it still has great music. The game could be a bit more challenging too, considering it tries to emulate bullet hell. It was supposed to get a hard mode, but it never happened.

Yeah I think it's a lot better about that. Most of the story is more mythical and such, albeit still in a meta way.

it's nice, gameplay wise, boss fights were absolutely amazing, especially the ones that don't conform to the game's design (eg, omega flowey) . story wise it's very mediocre and the entire theme seems like watching some children cartoons about friendship, which was so boring and dull to see the themes get presented. it definitely has it moments and funny ones (some try to stay funny for long and it just becomes dull). and it didn't hit my feels or anything, literally just went wayy far from my feels as i finished the ending while being deadpan and dead inside (that might be just because of my autismo low empathy tho) the game also never explained monsters in good depth and immediately jumped into the story theme without looking back. some of music were great, but i wouldn't call it praise worthy myself

I'd say give it a try and finish it because it's pretty short of a game

I think he needs to find a solid team to do most of the coding and art work, so he can focus on the writing, ideas, and music.
Unfortunately, since he did most of his deving solo, he's probably wary of hiring others to do the work for him. It's a common problem for "one-man army" types in computer science where they find it difficult to work with others when they've done it all solo for years.

The gameplay is so intrinsically tied in with the story that replay value isn't really a thing unless you're replaying for the story or to pursue another path
It just needs to be judged as a whole experience. If you can endure the quirky humor it'll make you laugh a few times and care about the characters. The story and how the game reflects it will just carry you through the game

The thing about Undertale is that its basic plot about the monsters wanting to leave isn't the real point of the game. Undertale is about the experience, it's about what you think as you play it. I never played the genocide run myself, but I've seen it played and I appreciate it very much. Even though Sans fantards are basically a meme in and of themselves now, the genocide run still made him one of my all time favorite characters in fiction ever. He might just be a 16 bit sprite, but I could sense every of emotional pain in what he said, I could talk for hours and hours about Mr.Fox's excellent writing skills in regards to this scene alone. But I personally couldn't bring myself to complete the genocide run as I truly didn't want to hurt any of the characters I'd befriended. Yeah, it's gets pretty tiring to see things like blacks and other poc or even muslims and women always seem to be grouped with LGBT things since they view them as other oppression buddies they can use to push for their own agendas through when each group has different values and wants.
