it's a juche thing. you are a soldier because your lineage is known to be loyal for generations. families known for failure and disloyalty do not climb the social hierarchy and remain slaves and servants and enjoy no quality of life. military service is a way to escape poverty but quickly becomes a matter of life and death when family gets involved. there are virtually no civilians in imperial society. you either serve or you die.

Anyways, a huge part of any war effort in the SW universe happens in the vacuum of space and ballistic weapons are a no-no to begin with due to cold welding. So it's pointless to use laser weapons in space and pew-pew guns on the surface.
The few ballistic guns, like tusken raider rifles and the one that bounty hunter uses in Attack of the Clones are probably magnetic and not gunpowder powered, tho.

The Republic was a shitshow to begin with.
A religious order of 'chosen' people (The Jedi); who kidnap children on a galactic scale, who are emotionless and cold to the plight of politics and the people besides matters concerning 'muh sith' are heavily intertwined with the Senate.
When a war does start (Which the Republic were the aggressors through invading Geonosis, first with espionage then with an invasion fleet), the Republic forced an army of clones who were created with questionable ethics, these brainwashed uneducated clones have the mental capacity and maturity of children for their bodies age twice as quick; the clones are not Republic Citizens, and are forced to fight; they can never leave forced military service, there are literal Clone Death Squads for deserters.
The cherry on top, is that this mysterious order of chosen religious people who only have loyalty to their own extreme religious dogma (The Force), are made Generals of a brainwashed child armies. A religious monk has no fucking clue how wars are waged either logistical or combat wise.
Corporations grew to the point where they could field their own private armies and even occupy entire planets; with no discernible response from the Republic. For all they do is collect taxes and sit on them, they had no military or security for it's borders.
The Senate was inefficient in handing individual systems/planets, the EU is the best example, the local's of a planet would have negligible representation and had to abide to laws created by people living in the core worlds.
The Republic was a rotting, corrupt and inefficient carcass, Palpatine merely sped up the process of it's demise.
