Just started the game, does choosing which house t lead at the very beginning decide the story?
I got the impression the split was at the end of the pre-timeskip section.
Also, can I get characters from other houses to my side?
I can’t decide which one to go with.

Go Blue Lions or Gold Deer they have superior stories, you can recruit students from other classes but with expection to the 3 lords and Hubert, Dedue and Hilda.

Black Eagles is much better story on replay

If you're interested, you can save everyone from being killed barring Hubert and Edelgard.

The only reason to ever play Black Eagles is to get Edelgard's supports, which you arbitrarily can't get because the developers are dumbfucks
or if you just want to watch the world burn but that's really every ending if you think about it, so whatever

BL is the canon story so save that one for last

BE Edelgard feels more like a side story that pales compared to the other 3 routes

If you're strapped for time I would do BL > GD > BE (Church)

I did all 4 and it took me 300ish hours to finish it all. Also do "hard" mode because even that feels more like standard with "normal" as easy
