Jumpscares are cheap. The scare they create is only seconds long. As soon as you realize you are not in danger it fades.

Real horror you can feel. It's a sense of dread that starts at the base of your neck and spreads over your whole body until you are too afraid to push forward on the joystick.

Real talk: jumpscares are the only way to make horror games actually scary. Muh atmosphere doesn't work unless the game has 100% photorealistic graphics, which is impossible.
