The multiplayer is incredible with 2 players. I think 3 player disallows AI and it stops being as fun.

No, besides the quality of its graphics it's pretty awful. It was loved back then for its surprise-edginess factor, and it's loved now simply out of nostalgia. It singlehandly destroyed Rare (since they were never the same after leaving Nintendo).
