I have 8700K + Z390 mostly working with networking and everything (I say mostly because I didn't bother to install the ME driver to see if it's working kek). Biggest roadblocks are NVMe and USB 3. NVMe you need to find your drivers and add them to the setup image, and USB 3 you'll need a PS/2 keyboard to make it through the install and add self-signed patched Intel drivers post-install. The patch to the drivers is minimal so you can do it yourself in a hex editor if you don't trust a stranger's drivers (basically just changing a device ID in a few bytes plus the INF).

A lot of Steam games without native Linux support work out-of-the-box if you enable Proton, and a fuckload more will run with very minor tweaks like adding some additional launch option which you can just copy and paste from someone's comment on ProtonDB. Basically everything is implemented into the Z390 chipset so it doesn't matter which motherboard you buy, USB won't work at all unless you jump through hoops or Intel updates their shit. Z370 I believe you can sort of get working because it still had a separate host controller for USB 3.1 which had its own drivers.

To get it up and going yeah, bvut ASUS EZ Installer will take care of those for you when it creates the patched ISO since if you don't have the USB 3.1 drivers you wont be able to use your mouse and keyboard during installation (out of the box Win7 only supports USB2/3), and the NVME patch for... installing on to an NVME.
All other SATA, etc drivers can be installed later.

I agree that optimistically windows 7 could be in the 20% for a extended amount of time due to the "muh privacy" "muh forced updates" folk, but 20% is small enough for people who are developers to say "Is it really worth it to support windows 7, that decade old OS that you cannot even BUY anymore, and won't even work on the newest computers out of the box?". And it is also very real that I may be wrong, maybe it will go the same path of win XP, in 4 years the win7 share could be at 10% or less which is pretty much dead (aka: linux tier).

I recently had to wait 1 week for Oculus to fix their drivers for windows 7 because they force-updated every user into a bug ridden new release that deliberately broke windows 7 functionality and every communication they made was a smug "hurr just update bro".

I've had to troubleshoot some 30+ machines at work using Windows 10 over the last year that have borked during updates and not once has system restore, "refresh", reset, startup repair, safe mode, backup or any of the recovery modes worked. Not fucking once and every time we've just had to do a fresh install of the OS.

You can get them shrink-wrapped or used on eBay. Buying used is perfectly okay as far as Microsoft's concerned (for the first transfer at least, but who's counting). Buy from sellers who take pictures of each item. Every box has different numbers on the COA so double check the pictures to make sure seller isn't just reusing one picture. Fakes can be too sophisticated to tell unless you can inspect them physically, so the best you can do is make sure the seller is at least diligent enough to take pictures of every item and that every item is unique. Ultimate can be had for $110-120 used, Pro for $80-100, and Home Premium for $35-50.

If you have to use Intel, you get the Intel drivers, which have great performance but a spotty track record with bugs, especially with OpenGL. I haven't used Intel video drivers since before Vulkan was announced, so I don't know what the modern situation is.

Get Windows 10 LTSC if you ABSOLUTELY MUST use it, otherwise STICK WITH 7. LTSC is a version stripped down to it's core for reliability purposes, it only receives security updates. If you set your connection to metered it will reduce updates even further to only critical ones.
Using this method you can upgrade your machine at your leisure.
LTSC still has some telemtery, but is minimal compared to mainstream versions. You can block telemetry by using a firewall program called "simplewall". The firewall is very simple. When something tries to make a connection to the internet, either inbound or outbound, it alerts you and asks whether you want to block it. You can make a whitelist so that only the programs you authorize have access to the internet.
If you do get Windows 10 LTSC, I would search on reddit. MAKE SURE you confirm the SHA-1, SHA-256 etc are the same as the official Microsoft ISO's.
As for an activator, use KMS-auto from mydigitallife forums. You will need to create an account to get it. mydigitallife forums are the only trusworthy source to find the activator.
