I think it's implied that the age of dark will eventually dissipate and turn into a new age of greyness. Think about it: the first flame is what causes disparity to exist. The age of dark is what happens when the fire fades to the point where the lights no longer stay lit. But there are still embers as is present in the Untended Graves wherein bonfires still work and shit. But eventually if it keeps fading and fading there won't be any fire left at all, it's just fucking dead. And when it's just fucking dead the concept of disparity dies along with it. The world reverts back to how it was before the first flame existed at all. So like a billion years after you and the fire keeper watch the fire fade away, the darkness fades away too to expose the sea of ash that you and Gael fight in. At least, that's how I always saw it.
