Nothing stops you from doing it, and it's not that uncommon to do "OC focused story set in an already established world" and then make the jump to just using your original stuff.

I've seen that happen plenty of times, but mostly in art. You just need to make your characters likable enough and at least interact with canon stuff a bit before they can be on their own.

It's not really for attention, but once you get to a certain point there's always the desire to show it to people.
I think i might just go this route, the story only borrows a couple terms and concepts from the original anyways

I'm writing it primarely because i enjoy it, but i have to admit i may be overdoing it for what's supposed to be a fanfic noone's going to read

I'm afraid of writing because I know it will become a written video game where the protagnist levels up and I just describe how much damage he does. The whole thing will just be a shounen power level dump with some sex (maybe sex leveling stats?) because I have a hard time writing non-autistic dialogue and descriptions.

A sort of spiritual successor to my favorite Idolmaster doujin where Chihaya and Yukiho are cheating on Haruka and Takane respectively. They know it's wrong but the "fake" love they receive from their GFs makes the illicit relationship that much hotter so they keep doing it, until the ending where it's implied that Yukiho outright loves Chihaya more than Takane and might be planning to fuck up Haruka. It's such a fascinating take on cheating and I'd love to do more like that in another property.

Yeah, if it utilizes concepts and ideas within the universe, it's fanfiction.
For some reason, people don't read them. I guess it's because mostly younger people find interest in fanfiction, I remember when I was a kid I loved Gohan from Dragon Ball and read dumb time travel fanfics and crossovers with Harry Potter and Naruto.
Now though, I just like comfy stories. Doesn't matter who's in it. That or weird ones. Read this really weird Harry Potter one where Harry gets adopted by Voldemort or some shit (cause his parents abandoned him) and it was incredibly edgy in the original, but the author made this really long remake that has shit like Harry killing the basilisk with chlorine in the Great Hall (which results in his body just being destroyed) and it was actually legitimately gripping.

I can deal with a lot of shit but anything involving insects is not part of that, fuck everything about it

There are some fanfiction archives out there, I know the Internet Archive has a few zip folders, but they are huge, like 15GB of fanfic.
There's also a chance it was posted elsewhere or somebody has it. I remember one crossover fanfic that was deleted by the author, but one day a few years later a new account uploaded the first three chapters then stopped and deleted the whole thing (probably because I asked "How the fuck did you get this" and they never said they were reuploading another author's work, so they probably got scared they were getting called out on stealing).

I upload 2000~ word chapters for my fanfic on a less than consistent basis. Like, two times a month at best, and I haven't updated since July.
Just have faith. Follow it and wait for the inevitable email. One time I lost faith in a fanfic to be updated after 6 years and then the author came back, dumped 13 chapters, and left once more, for around 3 years now.

Persona 3 smutfics on AO3 are my lifeblood not the gay ones though

That happened to me once. The author then came back years later with the last chapter and kinda just shat on everything that happened before by saying that the relationship that they built up was unhealthy and really limiting and didn't want to end it glorifying it. Which, yeah, understandable, except you don't PUT OUT A CHAPTER YEARS AFTER THE FACT THAT MAKES THE REST OF THE FIC OBSOLETE. Either just cancel it, or remake it.
