2070 super right now or 5700Xt half a year later. 5700 XT drivers are still super fucking broken, enhanced sync causes bluescreens, just playing a youtube video in the background while doing some other GPU task can crash the driver, the card will sometimes randomly underclock itself because it fails to recognize a fullscreen app and just runs idle clocks. Avoid it for a few months until the slightly trained monkeys at AMD's driver team can fix it.

The issue is the money being spent on the RT hardware is a complete waste, its just a tech demo at this point, and within a year or two the majority of RT implementations will run like shit on the 2080 ti.

Then I bought a 1050ti when one of my shifts ended, except it was actually a RTX 2080ti that I had taken from its original box and put into the 1050ti box. Took the 1050ti as well because it was small enough to fit in my cargo pants side pocket. I left the 2080ti box in a dumpster out the back where it wouldn't be noticed before garbage day. I had to buy a new PSU to power the 2080ti, which I did legitimately at the store, so I feel like I paid them back well enough.

I've already got SLI 980ti, don't feel like spending another 2k (AUD) on just a single generation skip.
Might go ahead with my plan to change out the case to a Meshify S2, get a new CPU AIO, maybe stick another SSD in the last M.2 motherboard slot so I can use the old 840 1tb 2.5" in another machine and then wait until the 3080's or only get a 2080ti if the 980ti's suck in 2077.

Wait at least 4 more months for the monkeys to fix their shit. But right now if you use MSI Afterburner and RTSS it's gonna bluescreen, if you use hardware accel in your browser it's gonna bluescreen, if you even think about touching any of the driver features like antilag or enhanced sync it's gonna bluescreen, if a game forces V-sync it might run at half your refresh rate for no reason, if you want to adjust the fan curve it's gonna crash the driver all the time, if you want to play anything in OpenGL it's going to grow legs and kick you in the balls.

The 1080 was too weak. Now this might sound weird as it blew AMD out of the water and was an upgrade over the 980ti but it was still not running the full Volta chip, not even close to it.
If we look back far enough this bullshittery really started with the TITAN. A $1000 GPU that was kinda maybe prosumer but not really since the Quadro existed. It was blatantly a top-end gaming card for prosumer prices. Then AMD finally manages to match/beat it depending on the game with the 290X and Nvidia just decides to sell a slightly upgraded gaming model called the 780ti for $650(really $700+ foor good models). And people fucking bought it in droves. Nvidia basically self-gimps their own cards a gen later but still get away with it as people buy 980s and 970tis despite the latter's 3.5GB debacle. At this point Nvidia knew they could get away with anything as long as their top-end model was better than AMD's which wasn't hard as AMD was rapdidly running out of money and funneling what they had into the CPU division.

So they just kept ramping up the prices because hey, who gives a fuck, people will buy it anyway.
And AMD's just sitting in the corner trying to make HBM2 a thing despite it having no real value for their biggest market, gamers.
