You can play KOF 98 on fightcade for free, though you’ll have to make it clear that you’re a newbie and want matches against other newbies. Garou is not as active but a lot of fun, KOFXIV is new but kinda dead except for a few pros.
If you have no experience in fighting games at all then honestly just play the first Fatal Fury, it’s simple and single player-oriented (a little tough to get the special moves out though). You can tool around against the AI in other games too if you like (I recommend the Real Bout Fatal Fury games since they’re great but have no players and KOFXIII because of the incredible visuals/music and to get more of a feel for his personality via pre-match dialogue)
