harvest moon

the game you'll actually play
you should start off with a game you already know the story of so you can just practice following it in japanese

Im thinking of Final Fantasy 4, Chrono Trigger and Mario & Luigi Super Star Saga then.

Bump

Play a game you know well in english and have fate that the localization team didn't fuck up too much, then try to play it in Japanese. You already know the rough idea so it should remove some ambiguity.

You can't learn japanese OP

This
I find Pokemon games work extremely well, with there being a good amount of dialogue in the games, but the stories and sentences are all very simple because the games are made for children

>play with kanji instead of just kana
>what the fuck did this bitch just actually say

>play with only kana
>have to deal with ambiguity
hate this feeling, literally hardest language I've ever learned

Depends on your approximate proficiency. Remember that whiles games are fun, studying language through them is not.

I'm N3 (was closer to N2 in the past when I actually studied but have forgotten a lot). In the N4/N3 level I really enjoyed the Hamtaro GBA games. They're made by the company who did Mario & Luigi and have mostly simple Japanese.

Anyone who tells you to play Pokemon is retarded. It's full of game-specific vocabulary that you will find either useless or frustrating to keep track of.

Personally I don't like playing games in Japanese because I play games to relax. But I LOVE reading artbooks in Japanese. Usually these are untranslated in the west and feature tons of obscure information that makes you feel special and cool for knowing. Strategy guides can be fun too if they're up your alley- I really liked using my Japanese Animal Crossing guides because they were much better than the US ones.

N5- Fuck off
N4- I don't think there are many games at this level. Even easy kids games have a lot of bizarre words you won't be ready for. Avoid untranslated JRPGs even though that seems like the good idea because they're text heavy and you'll get discouraged. A good option though is playing a big Japanese JRPG with the Japanese audio on and English subtitles- challenge yourself to figure it out before checking. I picked up a lot of subconcious stuff from playing Persona 4 and Xenoblade(s) this way- especially because many lines aren't translated.
N3- Children's games, simple games with an equal mix of gameplay and text.
N2- More complex games you are familiar with. JRPGs become manageable here but don't go for fucking Xenogears obviously.
N1- Hentai games, then move to real Tinder to get a QT Japanese lover. Or if you're an gay incel, Mother 3
